I use photostream but it's not always instant. If I do need the photo right away I just iMessage it to myself and open it in Messages on my Mac - faster than email imo.

It has to do with how OSX treats your iPhone. On Windows it shows up as a camera. Browse into the file system and drag and drop what you want to keep. As far as I can tell the only option for this in OSX is using import software such as iPhoto. It works, but why? Well, I don't use my Mac to store photos, that's for sure.

Use spotlight to search your Mac for "Image Capture."

Works exactly the same as Windows Explorer.

Thanks for that tip! Why doesn't this automatically load? This is one of those things I thing almost nobody knows about!

My one complaint is the layout. There is a relatively large thumbnail of each picture making the number of files I see per page limited. Not a deal breaker though. Before today I didn't even know I could do this.

Image Capture. The app comes with OSX.

I personally use Instashare. http://instashareapp.com

Agreed! Instashare rocks!

Use the list view button if you need a sortable list and use the slider at the bottom to resize the thumbnail.

Email documents?

Also
Image capture does automatically load when you stick an iPad or
iPhone in, did my head in so I disabled that.

Apple have made it very easy. Photostream works flawlessly and automatically.

What files are you trying to transfer?

iexplorer app.

thats how you transfer files from phone to computer.

easy enough and its a good app.

Just open it with the phone connected and select "When this device is connected open..." and select "Image Capture." It doesn't open automatically because people kept complaining about programs opening automatically when the phone was connected, the manual is helpful here.

From what i know photo stream uploads all of your images to the cloud, right? I dont need that, i only needed to transfer a pic to my mac on the move, just to show something, i didnt want to connect the cable :/

Got it. Unfortunately, as you indicate, Photo Stream is too unweldy for what you want.

I remember years ago, looking at apps from the Apple Store that would do what you want. I believe there are several but they may create an Ad Hoc network with WiFi vice using Bluetooth.

Thanks. I knew how to change it, however iPhoto was always the default (and I don't remember setting it as such). So, IMO, the default is a fairly useless application. I think more people would know about this if at first boot it gave these options. I bought my Mac second hand, so no manual, but I admit, I likely would not have looked in there if I had.

I guess it boils down to a philosophy thing. To me, it would make sense to be able to see it as a removable drive, much like when you plug in a removable drive, it is viewable. I feel like there is no real need for these additional apps, but that is just my opinion, of course.

Instashare use bt, so it is a solution to what the op was asking. Airblue is more like the solution.

What does that even mean? There's like ten different ways you can do it. You could say that about any manufacturer; there is always going to be a finite number of ways to do something.

It means Apple's way of doing thins is restricted, nothing new here.

You're restricted to e-mail, iTunes wired transfer, iTunes wireless transfer, Bluetooth transfer (using an app), photo stream, DropBox (or any other file hosting app), or connecting your phone to your computer as a camera.

How many ways do you actually need? There comes a time to say enough is enough; that's enough ways to do something, let's bloody move on.

All those are work arounds to do something that can be done easily. :apple:

Instashare only works if the other device has the same app installed. What if you want to share to another phone?
Airblue sharing is better?

Yep. For a wired connection this is the same as Connect device>My Computer>Browse mounted device.

In fact, it's even better as it has some nice additional features like showing/sorting by extended meta-data, marking copied files for subsequent purging, generating a quick contact sheet, etc.

I use this to make photo/video specific backups to our server (generally for "local" use, I import to iPhoto that also gets Time Machined :) )

iFile works well for sharing photos between devices over WiFi or BT, you need a copy on each device and like all apps, it creates a local repository.

Generally, I just grab new photos out of our photo stream, the slight latency it's usually not an issue (and it's great for showing them on the AppleTV .. just walk into house, a few minutes later, they're on the big screen!)

Another "trick" is using the Print Sim in the dev tools, you can map the print queue to a folder, and on the iOS device, select images > action > print > sim printer and they're "printed" right over to the Mac running the simulator :D

There are at least 5 ways to transfer a file, none complicated:

1. Email (your phone doesn't have email?)
2. Photo stream
3. Sync with cable
4. Image Capture app
5. Sync over WiFi

None of which work with two people who wish to exchange pictures but do not wish to share their personal details, such as e-mail address (parents at a soccer game would be one example).
