Year 2013 - direct quote:
"So i went in to the Apple store today with the intention to buy a 15 inch Macbook Pro Retina. Im messing around with it reading the specs, and just pretty much checking out all the programs that come preinstalled. After looking I notice that it doesnt come with a CD/DVD drive, I asked the employee was this forreal that there really wasnt a CD/DVD drive and he confirmed it. I was like this has to be a joke a 2000$ laptop doesnt come already with a CD/DVD drive that id have to pay another 80$ for the Apple USB Super Drive if i wanted that. I really want a MBP but i might have to reconsider after finding this out, you would think a 2000$ laptop would already come with basic stuff like that but i guess not. Needless to say i was heartbroken and disappointed today."

NFC

This is frickin ridiculous - and here we go again... new design - new "problems" of power users

Close to what i would have been happy.

I would have taken,

Left Side:
Magsafe
USB A legacy
TB3

Right Side:
TB3 (1 or 2....total 2 is enough for me).
SD Card

That could easily have been put into the new chassis size.

Im not too bothered about the ports on the new one, just will have to carry around a USB A and SD card adapter with me.....slightly annoying.....at least until USB C becomes completely standard which isnt going to happen for a year or 2.

Its missing a parallel port... for my dot matrix printer...

you should send a message to them asking them to make a coralblue dongle. maybe they send some stickers back to you... and of course the bill to pay postages and handling of those stickers.

i would have been happy if one of the usbc was removed and replaced by usb3. and still having magsafe.

Left: Thunderbold 3, Thunderbold 3, Headphone
Right: Thunderbold 3, Thunderbold 3, SD-Card

… that’s what I was hoping for (+ a heaphone jack in the iPhone 7).

If only all those legacy ports weren't too thick to fit in apples new ultra portable device that takes full advantage of USB c and tb 3 slimness and versatility in the new port standard everyone is switching to, oh yeah thankfully they were.

Apple has designed these machines to take full advantage of new tech from ports to graphics cards in order to make the smallest lightest machines they could while retaining battery life and screen size. Spot on Apple that's what a portable is all about.

If that's not what you want then you'll just have to get over it and buy something else we all knew what was coming they practically told us why any of you thought it would be any different is beyond me!!

haha everyone is focusing on the other ports and didn't realize the images the OP posted doesn't include a headphone jack. Personally, USB-C is a great standard that I would love to embrace if I were to be purchasing a new laptop. To be able to plug into one hub at my desk via one cable. I have my keyboard and mouse as bluetooth already so it wouldn't be too difficult.

Looks like there a still a lot of people here who do not understand the benefits of charging via USB-C. They don’t understand that a USB-C port is capable to replace a docking station.

Nice setup you are planning there @Floris, one suggestion though. Buy a new USB-C to micro USB-B cable for your portable harddrive! :)

Yep, I guess this might have been the reason to go dGPU only with Skylake already.

Instead of spending 25 to 50 euro on some apple adapters, i am just going to spend 15 euro on usb-c external drive case. That way i get the most out of the drive, and dont need adapters, and increase the read/write of those older drives through faster usb-c cables.

Why is a power plug old tech?? Now we have to use a TB/USB-C slot just to charge the laptop.

And that is a good thing. Android phones come with USB-C, HP and Dell computers use USB-C, and more are coming. So the standard is being adopted.

Right now if we want a second charger to leave at the office, or the cord breaks on the original unit, we have two choices. Drive to the nearest Apple store (perhaps a long disntance) Pay Apple a lot of money, or buy someone from Amazon and take the chance that it will fry the unit.

Wouldn't it be better to be able to buy a generic charger that we could find everywhere for a reasonable price? Or if you connected your laptop to a monitor, and have the monitor charge the laptop over the same cable that passes the display data?

No more freaking out when your dog chews your magsafe cord, or you wind it up and the cable fractures or the end falls off.

Pfft. Anyone can photoshop a few extra ports onto an existing device. Try engineering that internally while keeping the form factor.

Oh yes in some (!) phones printers, mice, keyboards sd card readers are still USB type B.

Also that so called old tech is the standard but I guess that's not what the social media pros are interested in.

Maybe train the dog not to chew cables?

Hey there's no PS/2 port either! Some of us 'Pros' use high quality roller-balls from the 90s, now I have to plug it into a PS/2 - USB-A converter, then that into a USB-A - USB-C converter?

1 USB-C + Dock = all those old ports. 4 USB-C + Docks = an exceptionally cluttered desk?

Oh yes in some (!) phones printers, mice, keyboards sd card readers are still USB type B.

What ports do 'social media pros' need? Business card printer on the side?

Only thing that worried me about the loss of ports, was no longer being able to use a USB Stick to carry my work, without carrying an adaptor as well, as most desktops have only USB-3. However, having found numerous memory sticks like this one with both a USB-C and USB-3 side to them, it seems to be a pretty simple, cheap and easy thing to fix :)

For anything else like printers and bulky hard drives that I'll only ever use at my desk, I don't mind leaving an adaptor in the draw.

No, if you already have your HDD in a USB 3.0 enclosure you won’t gain any speed improvements. Your hard drive is the bottelneck.

USB 3.0 is capable to transfer up to 625 MB/s and there’s simply not a single HDD that comes even close to that. I’d expect that your old portable 2.5" HDD doesn’t even reach 100 MB/s…

But sure, instead of buying a USB-C to USB Mini-B cable for your old enclosure you could as well buy a new USB-C 3.1 or Thunderbolt 3 enclosure and a USB-C to USB-C cabel.

Nice thoughts, thanks, and yeah, seems about right.

Number of times I've used ports on my Late-2013 MacBook Pro Retina:

SD Card reader slot - twice.
HDMI slot - never.
USB slot on right side of mac - three times.
Thunderbolt ports - often -- but, 99.9% of the time, they're converted into mDP or into ethernet connections. I've used "Thunderbolt" about twice to transfer content to a new Mac, etc.
USB port on left side of mac - often. But, it just plugs into a hub. Replace the USB-A to USB-B 3.0 wire with a USB-C to USB-B 3.0 and we're all good.
Headphone jack - maybe 5 times...

So, four USB-C ports that can be anything I want, and one wire can replicate my mDP, ethernet, USB and more? Sign me up!

Seriously, stop kicking and screaming about change.. Some people on here wouldn't be happy with a fridge over an ice chest either... "OMG!! They took away the place where I'd put my hipster ice to keep the food cold and replaced it with this strange compressor and coil.. Now I need to place the new ice chest with compressor near a power outlet! That's totally unacceptable! Give me my ice back!!"
