So your argument is that you hold onto a bezel much like you hold onto a knife handle?

You are aware that we are discussing the top and bottom bezels, right? Those do nothing in terms of making the phone easier to handle. They are a detriment, if anything.

So you want a screen? Just a screen?

I didn't say I wanted one thing or the other lol. I am simply arguing that I have never seen anyone hold their phones by the top or bottom bezel, and that the addition of the bezel shouldn't really effect how cramped your screen is because you aren't interacting with it.. You may be that exception I suppose.

If Apple has anything to say about that, based on what was said regarding "antennagate", then "you're holding it wrong" :)

If you want my official stance on the matter, I think the bezel could have been smaller, but I won't lose a second of sleep over it. I don't see Apple changing this any time soon anyway. IMO it is part of the look of the iPhone, the only part that has actually remained through the ages. And probably the most important part of all; how the phones looks when you're using it.

I'm not sure how you hold the phone in landscape mode without holding onto the bezels. I won't hold it by pressing my palms together into the sides of the phone, that would just be idiotic, lol.

That's a fair point, one that I didn't consider. :)

Still, I don;t think reducing the bezel size some would be detrimental to that usage, At least it wouldn't be for me. Usually when in landscape, people are typing, no? So they aren;t holding onto the bezel directly most of the time.

I hold the bezel everytime I pick up my iPhone.

I find that bezels are pretty much small enough on the phones I have used. I like having some bezel because I do want some clearence between the sides of the phone and the screen.

The iPhone has large top and bottom bezels. The placement of components may dictate larger bezels. The iPhone home button is round and needs enough space for it. The bottom bezel must be large enough to accomondate it along with speakers, mic and headphone jack. The home button is the most visible item that requires a large bezel.

The top bezel is equally large in part because it makes the top and bottom bezels symmetric. Also, there is the speaker. Another reason is that the camera module on iPhones is place in the top corner of the phone. Camera modules do need some thickness. If it doesn't have fit underneath a part of the screen, the phone can be thinner. Apple has quite an obsession with thinness in their phones. The iPhone 6 Plus camera module is even too thick for the thickness of the phone and juts out a bit. Without the top bezel, perhaps the iPhone may not be as thin as it currently is.

So when you are holding your phone in "portrait mode" you are holding onto the bezel?

Picking up is irrelevant. The bezel doesn;t NEED to be there for you to do that. Sure you would touch some of the screen. No real loss... you are picking it up.

Yes I use the bezel in both directions. My thumb wraps around and sits on the bezel. Don't get all butt hurt cause someone doesn't agree with you. Get over it.

I am absolutely not butt hurt. Just trying to understand how you possibly hold the phone with your thumb on the bezel at all times, especially during active use. Do what you want man.

Don't get all defensive because I asked questions on a public forum. :p

If you add in the bottom row of function keys on androids then you will find that they both have about the same amount of bottom bezel. When you turn it sideways to watch a video or play a game the android screen gets bigger but the iPhone is nicer to hold and you still can hit the hime button easily.

Side bezels are there for a technical reason: to prevent you from touching with your palm or thenar (base of your thumb) when you reach over with the thumb to tap on the screen. I have this problem with my Moto X where the side bezels are ever so slightly smaller than on the iPhone. I'll reach across with my thumb but the touch does not register correctly because the base of my thumb is touching the edge of the screen (leads to a lot of accidental zooming :p )

I have this exact same problem with my Galaxy S4. The only real solution is to do what Sharp did with their Aquos phones, move the display up top and add a "chin" on bottom. It looks a bit odd but when you hold it in your hand it makes complete sense. Of course it does limit you to holding the phone a certain way and is not ideal for landscape.

I really think they should do away with any buttons on the bottom when dealing with phones this big. It's just awkward to reach them if using one-handed. Hell, Samsung even provides a one-handed mode where the screen is shrunk a bit and controls added to it for easier reach. It's not exactly ideal though. I wish they just went with phones that have small bezels at around 4.5" size.
