It would be a waste to put a POS OS like windows on that dell.

It would a great xen kernel based virtualization host running say centos 64-bit. Can easily cram 4-5 full on operating systems on that thing for very cheap. Could be a very serious workhourse. You could even do a clone of a real mac and run it with a few hacks. Or, cough, windows.

"Dell? Who needs that much RAM? I guess if you were running geological surveys. Can this machine get up and make me a sandwich? I'd hate to see the price tag on the RAM alone. Oh well good job DELL! you just mad the only computer in the world no one can afford."

lol!! :D

Basically I think more than 4GB of RAM on Windows vista/xp/whatever is a waste of RAM.

Well, I suppose that all depends on the application. A lot of the 64-bit Adobe CS4 apps (Vista 64 only, unfortunately) will gobble up all the RAM you can give them. Especially Photoshop, Premiere and After Effects.

I do get tired of the OS X arguement for adding so much value to a machine. The license for OS X is $129, not $1000+.

That's because Apple is a hardware company. OS X exists to get people to buy Apple's hardware. Apple could likely sell the OS for $9.99 and it'd make very little difference to their bottom line.

Of course OS X is the reason I will never buy anything else but a Mac. This is to be my first Mac Pro purchase and I'm really sweating over which one to get!

That math is misleading - if Apple couldn't earn back the R&D expenditures for OS X by building it into the price of systems, it would have to charge a lot more for OS X.

no, im implying that there's more to these new processors than whats in the "new" mac pro. in a few months, maybe a year, they will completely revamp the mac pro (inside and out). and until that happens, im not pulling the trigger. i think the next mac pro will have ram capacity similar to this, blu-ray, usb 3.0, and who knows.

Uh, no. You have absolutely no idea. They won't change it for over a year.

Months? Give me a freaking break. :p

Probably the same time next year the Mac Pro will be updated. I guess the only next thing I would look foward to is a new gpu + usb 3.0 (or Firewire S3200) and (not sure about this part) 32nm.

Highly doubtful, except maybe usb 3.0. But even if any of these were added, that's the magic of PCIe slots and an unused optical bay. Besides, they just did revamp the MP.

I just want to know when do you stop waiting?

Firewire 800 is on a Mac Pro, nah ill wait for Firewire S1600 or S3200.

Usb 2.0 is on a Mac Pro, nail ill wait for USB 3.0.

PCI Express 3.0, SATA 6.0, Sandy Bridge, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Nvidia GTX 300 Series or ATI Radeon 5000 Series.

Then after that comes out, lets wait for Apple to come out with a 4K monitor since 1920x1200 or 2560x1600 is not good enough.

When does it stop?

When does it stop?

When your old computer breaks.
