This argument is semi-fallacious; Apple always charged more for their phones than the mainstream competition because they have a better OS and they know people (us) are willing to spend more.

Future proofing.

Think it about it folks. Every year we get a new iPhone with more features. And yet the price stays exactly the same.

How can Apple afford to do this?

Well they started at $999 knowing that years down the line they would be offering us more for the same price.

Thats also why the upgrades are minimal as of late.

The phone cost more because it cost more to make. That was the first year the new iPhone form factor was being introduced, so upfront production costs are definitely higher. Samsung also charged more for their OLED screens.

There’s no conspiracy.

The vast majority of iPhone users don’t pay more for the flagship iPhones though. It’s the mid tier which has the mainstream market for Apple but yes there is a market within their user base that are willing to pay a bit more. iOS is available throughout the whole iPhone range so it’s not a case of needing to pay more to use it.

As I said will that phone not work or be slow ? It will get security updates but it still is a fine phone. People need to stop complaining and enjoy life.
The process of “enjoying my life” include the technology , since it is one of my hobbies, and to give Samsung $900 for a flagship no more updated after 2 years is far from my concept of “entertainment“.

I am enjoying life. I can get up every morning & enjoy the weather, my wife and our dog. Approaching 80 years young. My health is decent. No complaints about my phone (IPhone 11). Instead of complaining, buy a phone that you want. Life is good, enjoy it.

Why do people think I'm complaining?

I'm in fact defending Apple.

My point was this:

Person A buys iPhone X for $999

Person B buys iPhone 11 Pro for $999

Person B gets a better phone for the same price.

So the reason why they start high is bc they don't want to raise prices later despite giving more features

That's my guess.

That’s just not true.

The iPhone X was a special edition iPhone that started a new design pattern for the iPhone line. The more likely reason is that they, Apple, thought they could charge more for what was at the time a super special and more premium device.

Also because they know their phones will last longer in terms of performance. I can see the newer iPhones going beyond 5 years now.

In theory maybe but exterior hardware starts to deteriorate after two years and within three or more display has significant issues, earpiece gets clogged or fails, water damage may occur, etc.

I think that even “Average Joe” cares about product support. Especially when he paid good money for the product itself.

You’re mixing up OS updates and product support. The average joe doesn’t necessarily care about is it Android 10 9 or 8. Probably not even security updates as much. They want support as in if you call X will they help you.

Actually it is. Because Google is responsible only for a part of the software, and it goes through the manufacturer.

And the phone is still supported. You can still use all the apps and everything. As long as you are still getting security updates with is longer then OS updates you’ll be fine.

If people seriously cared about OS updates that much iOS would have a bigger share of the smartphone market which it doesn’t. Android has about 75% of the market or somewhere close to that.

Google still supports my very old Note 2 which is like 8 years old now. I recently put a new battery in it to see if it still functioned well and took it to the play store, downloaded a current launcher/icon pack and the thing works as good as the day it was new with the added bonus it Now cosmetically looks like any current android pie device with the new theme/launcher. It also runs all the current Version of apps I’ve so far downloaded from play store

Samsung gave up on it years back but google allow it to be perfectly serviceable and functional in 2020 😂 its not going to compare to my Xs max as my daily driver but it’s a fun excuse to tinker in another OS.

It probably depends on what country you are in though as iPhones are probably the most popular phones in most parts of Europe and the US. A lot of the market share is occupied by China etc.

By one company. If it’s Apple iPhone vs Samsung you’re going to see more iPhones. But I’m taking Android vs iOS.

I understand that, but what I meant was I still see far more iPhones than any other manufacturer on my daily travels.

Lol. It’s not that cut and dry. All over the world there is more android devices then iOS devices. Kind of happens when there is hundreds of different models vs a few. Even in nyc it’s kind to split evenly

I was just saying in my experience in my part of the world it’s very clearly dominated by the iPhone. I don’t doubt if you add up all the devices across the entire world, more Android devices are likely used.

iPhone prices are rising because their cost are rising from manufacturing to employee salaries.

Teardown sites report that the screen alone on the iPhone 11 Pro Max cost Apple around 66 dollars. The total unit price is near $400 to manufacture. Keep in mind that is just to manufacture a single unit, not any of the R&D, warranty or even basic overhead (salaries rent electric etc).

For perspective the iPhone 6 Plus was around 220. iPhone 8 Plus around 325.

Apple are going to have to find a way to get those costs down though in future if they want OLED iPhones to appeal to the mass market. Right now their mid tier is thriving and their top tier devices are more niche. You’d think with their investment and infrastructure they would have found a way to produce a more LEAN manufacturing and supply chain process by now.
