I wonder how many people that bad mouth Windows Mobile have ever used it or are just Apple Fanboys that are anti anything Microsoft? I know I've used WM on a variety of devices and have never had the problems that people like to post about here. My current phone is a Motorola Q running WM5 Standard and it runs rings around my iPhone as far as functionality and I've never had it crash whereas Safari on my iPhone crashes all the time. Like wise I've got a Dell Axim X3i running WM2003 and it is a rock solid device also. I just gave my iPhone to my daughter and am looking to upgrade my Moto Q shortly and am on the fence as far as iPhone 3G vs. HTC Diamond Touch vs. Samsung Omnia. But everytime I read on here about terrible iPhone 3G performance, that really nudges me to go the other way. Plus I just plain don't like Apple's Big Brother attitude.

Omnia:
Weight: 125g
Dimensions: 112 x 56.9 x 12.5 mm

iPhone:
Weight: 133 grams
Dimensions: 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm

Who woulda thunk it? The iPhone is larger. I think the iPhone's sloping sides and overall minimalism just makes it seem smaller and thinner. The Omina really does look like a boring black brick, IMO.
It does. Somebody at work has one and it felt about twice as thick. The other thing I noticed was that the display (which with these phones makes up about 80% of it) is no comparison, and when I turned it on it displayed a bunch of anonymous icons. After having used the iPhone for a few weeks the Omnia felt kinda hostile.

yuc. no interest in this at all. i just don't like windows no matter how they TRY to make user friendly. it still looks like too many steps to do anything. icons ugly too. the guy talking sounds like a dork.

edit: i should note that i had a windows mobile phone for a bit and it was a nightmare to do anything.

You will be prosecuted :p

Although the Ui is rather ugly the phone looks usable. I am really glad that other phones are beginning to take shape nicely. I travel a lot and live in two different countries about 6 months at a time. Not being able to unlock the iPhone 3G is bumming me out I would be suicidal to pay the roaming rates on it. It looks like maybe I have a few options now.

I love the iPhone but I also hope that every single phone invented right now blows it out of the water. My best interests don't always have to match with Apple's best interest. I am a low down snake in the grass I know.

An interface designed for an 80s sci-fi show? Is that really what we want?
Uh...... yeah. If you ever watched the show all of the interfaces were touch screens and...... the iPhone is a touch screen. They had a portable device called a PADD which looked like an iPod Touch but a bit bigger. Would you rather have a UI from the 80's designed for a two button mouse on a portable touch device?
Have you used either an iPhone or iPod Touch?

If they put google android on the i900 it will make it an easy choice, although I think android will continue to be delayed into next year.

Re: Star Trek UIs vs Reality

Using touch on the bridge is, to be blunt, an idiotic design choice for such a vehicle. I had to laugh every time the ship got hit and everyone fell against the touch activated control consoles. Oops! What did we accidentally turn on this time? Lol.

LCARS blows. Colors. Number output. Annoying beeps. Horrible fonts. Don't get me started. (Although just for fun one time years ago, I did a version of a field application with an LCARS-like curved menu and Trek style logos.)

It's also a bit ironic that many / most LCARS simulations are Flash based.

hi all, am posting here for the first time. thought some of you would be interested in my thoughts on how the iPhone 3g compares to the Samsung i900. I have both and have been using each for about 3 weeks now. If there was a good alternative I'd throw both phones in the bin tonight but unfortunately there is none.

My iPhone 3g is now running on 2.0.2
My Samsung i900 is not running on the latest update but it's running an SPB shell. I must say this shell is a must have if its to be compared with the iPhone.

I'll start off with a scale of 1 to 10 comparision, with 10 being perfect.

(hopes this hasn't been mentioned before...)

Funny how in the tutorial they say to 'click' on the tab (at the beginning of home screen personalisation).

On Device Stability, I am not so sure that its equal for the samsung omnia vs iPhone 3G.

I have a few friends having the Samsung Omnia,

1 sent the Omnia back to the Service Centre after a week usage, reporting motherboard died off suddenly. The worse part of it all, the motherboard ran out of stock and no ETA of the motherboard, so it's another waiting game till the new motherboard is in to replace the conk out motherboard.

another 1 Omnia user, said the phone lags and hangs too often. Gonna sell it away.

another friend, said the screen is definitely not as sensitive as iPhone 3G and she was trying my iPhone 3G and likes what she has experience with.

Still the Omnia is nothing comparable to iPhone in terms of UI, ease of use, and also WinMo really sucks, for me, being a WinMo, Symbian user before, and now on iPhone 3G. I feel my experience for iPhone 3G surpasses all the OS that I've used on a mobile phone.

In the end, to each his own liking as well.

Seen this phone today and played with it. In my opinion this iphone is much more responsive, and the screen on the samsung is not great. Opera 9.5 is good but safari is much better. You cant read the web pages till you zoom in because the screen quality in the samsung is not very good. My wife has the htc diamond and it seems a lot better. For me "I will keep my iPhone 3G";)

I've watched a few reviews of the Samsung on youtube and the touch screen doesn't look responsive, it looks like there is a lag. The iphone is really sensitive and smart, allot better regarding touch sensitivity.

Ok, now you are being totally pedantic. I never suggested that they used the same colour scheme fonts or layout but the iPhone buttons, sliders, tabs and other controls are designed for a touch interface whereas the windows mobile controls are virtually carbon copies of their windows desktop counter parts and their layout is also similar to what you would see in windows expect that the start button is at the top instead of the bottom.

From a developers point of view, there are other issues with the underlying OS which show how Windows Mobile was a hack rather than being built from the ground up but I really don't feel like talking "shop" right now.

i got it today and I 'm very disappointed .

It's touch screen is not working properly with plain fingers. Since some icons are very small ( as someone criticized MS for not understanding mobile devices' needs ) they also put a stylus in the package.

There is no slot for stylus so either you carry it in your pocket or tie it to your phone.

It is camera is cool has a very powerful flash light but still quality is lower than N95.

I might return it

I never said a word about phone UIs. :)

I was talking only about the unsuitability of LCARS, and of touch-only bridge control on a ship that often throws its users against its panels.

As far as touch-specific control design goes, I'm all for it, and have been doing such as a living since around 1990, and started with touch a decade before that, having built my own first IR touchscreen.

Cheers.

My DS comes with 2 styluses and 1 stylus slot... :D

Jokes aside, how can they design something to use with a stylus and not giving it a slot??

I think you will be much happier with the iphone. ;)
