Was just in an apple store it looked like they still had a bunch

Already did that, they told me for any other phone they could do it but not the iPhone because of "Apple's policy" (I have been a customer for 5+ years). Go to Apple and they say it's Verizons call, just goes back and forth. Tried many different angles but no one seems to budge. Sorry to get this off topic.......but seems like most stores still have some in stock so may try again later on tonight, if not hopefully tomorrow

Verizon salespeople get about 1/5 the commission on iPhones as other smartphones. They're hoping to push you onto a phone they get paid more for.

I cancelled my online preorder and took off to the AT&T Atlantic Station store here in Atlanta. There were about a dozen people in line at 1:30pm. They came out and said they were sold out of the 16GB models, so I immediately called Apple Store Lenox and they said to come on up. There were about fifty people in line at Lenox and they said their server was acting up. After an hour, they asked which model I wanted and carrier and gave me a card. Doug K helped me and was more than prepared to answer any questions that I may have had. The only issues I heard were with the Sprint models being sold out at 2:30.

Northbrook, IL apple store had hundreds it looked like still...

went there to have my vibration checked on my pre-ordered iPhone 4s

Carrier? no-contract price? These shouldn't be device dependent, only capacity & color.

??
The card was a reservation of a specific phone in the store's then-current inventory, so the card listed all the attributes that define it. The price on the card was always the no-contract price, but on checkout you paid the price you expected. The rep said was because the only price they could guarratee until you were vetted was the unsubsidized price.

Sorry for being unclear.

I went into my local Verizon store around 7PM EST to buy a new screen protector. I asked if they had a big line at opening and she said only a couple of people but they had steady business all day. People were buying them while I was talking with her. She said they still had plenty of models. This is a small city in NY.

Good to know that if I wanted to for another iPhone release, I could skip preorder and go right to the store and get one.

I got a white 32gig for my wife at 7pm at the apple store. No feel out there, but other smaller places, (Verizon, AT&T, etc) were sold out. Apple store seemed to have plenty.

Sold out in my city (Edmonton, AB, Canada) when I went at 4:00 p.m. today. My friend bought me the last one at one of the locations in Calgary this evening.

Just call the store first before you go to see if there's any stock left :)

I pre-ordered via Apple.com and UPS delivered at 11:31am; my employees walked into an AT&T Store and walked out with 3 iPhone 4S 32GB White after about a half-hour. I took today off, and couldn't activate via AT&T until 1:45pm. These same employees were calling me on their NEW iPhone 4S to rub it in, so I didn't sign their paychecks until my iPhone activated!!! lol :p

Me = BAD BOSS...

I think the availability of the 4S on three carriers changed this launch a lot. For all of the other iPhone launches, including the 4, AT&T was the only carrier, so lines were long everywhere. Now with all Verizon and Sprint stores selling the 4S at launch, it's creating a larger spread, and minimizing lines.

The 4S sold millions in the first day, but it wasn't as apparent because of the availability.
