launch day iphone4, zero scratches or cracks on any of the surfaces. Had it nude for at least the last year.

No screen protector here although I do baby my phone.

Front: Perfect, absolutely zero scratches.

Back: A few hairline scratches that are only visible if you look very closely with a light shining on the device.

Same here

Luckily I'm not selling mine this time, I passing it on to the missus

When I first got my phone, I scratched the screen by stupidly putting my keys in the same pocket. I then put a screen protector (Invisible shield) on to prevent any further mishaps. However, I took the screen protector off about 6 months ago after getting fed up of the orange peel effect and since then it's picked up a few more very, very faint scratches that you can only see with a bright light at a certain angle: When the phone's on it looks perfect

I think it should be clarfied that while the iPhone 4 screen is less prone to serious scratches then previous generations, you will still get loads of the smaller ones which are difficult to see with the screen on.

My iPhone 4 lasted a year with quality screen protectors on, the last being a Power Support Anti-Glare film. I ended up taking it off because I was fed up of having the display looking all "cloudy" and within weeks I have found a lot of hairline marks on it.

My advice: get a quality, clear screen protector if you want to stay scratch free!

I've got a launch day 3GS with zero scratches on the front. Just take care of your stuff and you won't have a problem.

For the first 3 months or so, I always over-protect my iDevices. I get a few cases, screen shields, etc(you'd think I'd learn by now, eh?). After about 7-8 months in, that 'babying' phase wears off, and I use the device naked.
My iPhone has been naked for 7 months, and I have one very feint hair line on the bezel, near the earpiece, but the screen is flawless. The back has a few more hairlines, but that doesn't bother me any more.

Rinse and repeat for the iPhone 5. :D

Maybe it would be helpful if people posted screenshots? :D

j/k

I've never had an issue with screen scratches on any of the iPhones I've had.

Bought it on launch day and I have one small scratch. I will take a small scratch any day over having a case or screen protector on his phone.

Wow now I know how it would be using it without a screen protector.

No, not sure what he did there but I never use one and my oleophobic coating is just fine. I suspect he's using some sort of cleaner besides water.

Edit: NVM...what boss.king said...that was a defective 3GS. I remember now.

Its fine, the only damage on mine is a tiny little crack on the back from when I dropped it

I have never had a screen protector on any of my iPhones. I don't now and have never had any noticeable scratches or smudges. Personally, I believe most screen protectors really take away the beauty of the retina display.

I hate screen protector. But I hate cases more.
I have to baby my iPhone since I dropped it to ground every month.

Do you set it on hard surfaces such as a desk or table? Does that interface ever scuff the back of your phone? I carry mine without a case but always keep it on a cloth on my work desk and at home I tend to keep it on the couch or my pocket. I am afraid to set it down on a hard surface without a back shield on it for fear of scratching the back to he**. Thoughts/suggestions?

Zero scratches on my iP4 and it was purchased near when they were introduced. With just reasonable care your screen should not be scratched. If you drop you phone often (LOL), get the ugle otterbox thing!

No noticeable scratches on the front (unless you look after them in direct sunlight, and if you do that, the scratches are very small)
I've got big scratches on the back though, but I don't care about that.

Edit. Never used screen protector (nor am I using a case) iPhone (4) is 1 year (+ few months) old.

have a 2+ year 3g iphone. Never used a screen protector and it is still perfectly clean except one thing. The back is hell though.

The one thing I mentioned is that I purposefully tried to scratch a corner of the screen to experiment. Ripped at it with my keys as hard as possible and oddly enough, there is only a small "thread"-like scratch. Fun experiment :D
