is this the end ?
Unless there's some further discussion with new sub-topics based on my original post, I think that this thread is most likely concluded... else it be banished to the realms of the Wasteland.

Thank you for the reassurance, everyone! Any future MR members who think they've developed the Kiss-of-Death, just find this thread and be reassured, you're not alone!

What I hate is when I post something, but no ones says a word. Then, sure enough, some punk comes along with the same idea, posts it, and everyone talks about what a great response it was. Man that pisses me off.
Spot on – I hate it when that happens.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned it before you did, actually.
That just shows you how many people have you on their "ignore list."

It's odd... I wonder if any of these anomalies are statistically significant? Perhaps we should start an inquest into MR posting trends.

Q? ;)
I see a scribbled note in the margin of an old edition of The Moderator Handbook. It's hard to read, because it's rather faded, but I think it says "Note to self: Delete all posts after michaelrjohnson's posts."

So that explains it! It isn't that nobody posts after you; it's that somebody was out to get you. I suspect it was Squiggly, the stealth moderator we had a few years ago, who was fired for taking the Moderators' private jet for a joyride without permission.

There's a good chance that if we measured which member had the most last-in-thread posts, it would turn out to be a moderator. That's because moderators have been known to close a thread with a final message (no, I'm not doing that with this post), and because most of the moderators are regulars who post a lot anyway.

Two other computations that might be of interest:

% of a given poster's posts that are last in their thread

% of threads in which a given member has posted that end with a post by that member

We might study it both with and without including the Marketplace forum, where the last post in a thread is likely to be "sold!" or "bought!" or feedback, since that probably skews the results compared with other types of forums.

However, if somebody is planning to do their Master's thesis on this subject, the real question is why a particular member would be more likely to have the last word. Are their posts so definitive that there is nothing else to add? Do they make the subject turn so boring that people are no longer interested? Are other members shocked speechless?

 LOL! :D

You don't understand jokes, do you, you bot!

Look on the bright side, you got the last word ;)

No he didn't. I feel the same way as him, and to prove my point, I WILL be the last person to post in this thread. I'll make sure of it.

Of course, I'm sure one of you jerks will try to prove me wrong as well. Is this the start of the never-ending thread?

It's just that so many people have you on their ignore list that they just can't read what you write :p :D

When I put a certain (now banned) member on my ignore list, the ignore buttons would ironically make me more keen to read those posts, I also used to feel I finished off loads of threads, sometimes like jsw, I make a good summary, sometimes it's just life, it's interesting that so many people think that they make the last post in threads. :)

Anyway, i think it's great that people of different backgrounds and ages from all over the world get on so well that we can have sensible discussions at all :).

I'm not letting you guys win this one. I'm the thread killer around here.

I'm waiting for Doctor Q to somehow get the stats on this.

Surely MJ or Mr Anderson would win simply because they have so many posts.

Bot... bot... bot...

Statistically, posts have a 1 in 12.09 chance of being last in their thread. The chances are much lower in the News forum and much higher in the DailyTunes Song Discussion forum, where that myterious user named DailyTunes (who refuses to post a profile picture) so often gets the last word.

Now that spicyapple has turned the Kiss-Of-Death thread into the Breath-of-Life thread, how do we know when we are done discussing this topic? Do we need a singing fat lady?
