50 posts and nobody mentions U1 chip. I love my SE 2 for its small form factor, but a U1 chip and maybe a slightly better camera are things I would like, but not at the expense of having a larger phone. I have an iPad Air for when I want a larger screen.

So far iPhone SE has always been about reusing an old design with updated inner elements. As much as I enjoy my mini 12, they (mini 12 and 13) must be much more expensive for Apple to make than bring back an older and cheaper XR design. 🤷🏻‍♂️
And I think the SE will continue to be about reusing old designs to produce a cheap, but profitable phone. The question is what design?

I don’t believe it will be an iPhone 11 because it’s dual camera and Apple will want to keep costs down and save the feature for newer, more expensive phones.

I doubt it will be the iPhone 8 (or larger 8 Plus) design because the older Home button is probably on its last legs.

The XR fits. Change the connector to USB-C along with an A-15 or A-16 internals. It will probably have an LCD screen but maybe an OLED if their costs have come down.

But I would really like Apple to adopt an iPhone product line strategy like they do with the Mac and iPad.

iPhone SE
iPhone Mini
iPhone
iPhone Pro
iPhone Ultra

But where are you going to go? Are any of the ‘good’ androids going to have that form factor? I know there’s cheaper stuff but it hardly feels like a worthwhile trade off.
Good question and I don't have an answer! haha

I've only recently got my 13 mini and expect to have it for a few years at least. If there's still no small iphone then I'll see what's available on the market at the time but yes you're quite right, there may not even be any small alternative android phones...

Time will tell I guess but having a phone to use with one hand and fits in my pocket easy are top of the list for me.

I have a 2020 SE, just switched carriers for a mini 13. I'm old , so a bigger screen would be great for my eyes, but at the same time I love the small for factor. Not everybody wants a phablet sized phone. I think to majority of users are not filming 4k on their phone. Some of us just want a phone that makes calls! Even if you have a bigger screen I don't watch videos on my phone, I have a iPad for that. I realize that the young generation uses their phone for everything, but some of use like me still use a Mac for productivity, and a iPad for that occasionally. At this rate the next iPhone will be based on the iPad mini form factor, so that YouTubers can brag about filming media productions in 8K on their new super phablet sized phone. The small form factor is great for sticking the the phone in my front pocket. I don't want to buy super pocket cargo pants so that I can fit my super sized phablet iPhone in them.

There are plenty of options for large iPhones in many price ranges and specs already. Want a less expensive large iPhone, get a 12! (Which is what I did for my parents as I got 2 of them for less than $350 practically new). Keep the SE a small form factor with updated internals to at least give small phone users an option.

This is ridiculous.

I am still waiting for a new iPhone mini and my hopes of a new mini SE are now gone. Why doesn't Apple give us a choice? Why do we get offered 10 different models in phablet size and not a singe small one, that can conveniently be operated by one hand?

And if people say, "not enough sales" or "I don't want one", then I just simply do not care about your nonsense. The first mini sold like hot cakes, but people buy the mini because they have other things in life going on so they don't replace the phone every year. And if you don't want a small phone, FINE, you have already enough options to choose from. Why not giving millions of customers the CHOICE of having a small one?
Come on now. “I don’t want one so neither does anyone else” seems to be a perfectly reasonable answer around here. 😅

I can’t see the size of this being over 5.4”. FaceID also seems more likely than a TouchID power button, and I’m guessing the price will be $549-$599. The current $429 SE will probably continue to be sold like the 9th generation iPad is now.

Probably never going to get a Pro Mini. People who want the smallest and lightest phone aren’t going to get it with stainless steel frames and triple camera arrays. Small doesn’t need to equal cheap (a future mini should be marketed at a reasonable/attainable price, not necessarily “budget”), but you can’t have small and load all the best features in. The weight and battery life would suffer too much.

I think it might be too late for Apple to reverse course and make a mini for 2023, but what if they got the message and started working on a 2024 mini now?

My ideal phone would be take the current 13 mini, up the display to 120hz Pro Motion (but skip AOD), move to a single camera, (but make it the 48 MP main with the 2X crop “zoom”), and use any space you saved doing that for more battery. If that comes out in 2024, it should be a A17 (one gen behind the pros, which would be A18 that year) and USB-C. Maybe by then TouchID under display would be a reasonable biometric alternative, but I am happy with the notch as-is. 2024 price? Umm… starting at $799 for 256 GB? (Just stop with 128 already)
Your ideal iPhone sounds pretty close to what I'd want as well. On the other hand, I think a "Pro" iPhone mini would sell better than the 12 and 13 mini because I feel like the folks after the cheapest iPhone view bigger as better, and people that appreciate the one-handed operability of an iPhone and turn to bigger glowing rectangles when and where warranted— those folks would be willing to pay a premium for a Pro grade wee iPhone. I would anyhow.

So, it seems to me the 12 and 13 mini didn't sell so well because they were neither the cheapest, and larger iPhones with lower prices exist, nor did they have the fancier cameras that are better enough on the bigger iPhones to lure small-phone wanting folks to anti-ergonomic land. I landed on carrying a compact camera around with a crazy zoom in addition to my 12 mini, but man would I like to not have to.

I find my SE acceptable in terms of size - but only because you can double-tap the home button and bring everything within reach in order to continue to use the thing one-handedly. Anything bigger than that? Nah. The Mini already removes that function, I believe, and is no smaller. *Sigh*
You just swipe down at the bottom of the screen to bring it down on the Mini (or any of the giant iphones).

While I love my 13 mini, I’d be curious to read your source for “the iPhone 12 mini sold like hot cakes”.
Unless you think that hot cakes sell badly, I always read that the 12 mini was disappointing in terms of sales, and that’s why they didn’t make a 14 mini (the 13 mini was already planned).

What is a “mini SE”? Aren’t all of the SE phones 4.7”? How much smaller do you want a smartphone?

The precious mini phones are 5.4”. Go buy a 2022 SE if you want a small phone.

The iPhone Mini, despite having a larger 5.4" screen, is physically smaller than the 4.7" SE.

Source: I have both of them on my desk here in front of me.

I'm with you. I would definitely be interested in a smaller SE - although my priority in considering the SE would still be price over size. I just don't need or want the higher end features offered by the more expensive phones.

I hope the SE4 is based on the XR body. I prefer phones with curved sides. To me, they feel better in the hand. I disliked the 4/5 and 12-14 phones for that reason. OLED would be a nice addition, as the XR screen’s quality does not stand up to newer generations’. Likely a strong “buy” for me.

There should be a poll on this article ;)

I think the SE4 will be the XR. It’s gotta be dirt cheap to make that chassis by now.
Something I’m wondering, tho, is if Apple will leave the XR design untouched, or if they will make the bezels flat just like the current iPhones. But I guess the only differentiation with the iPhone 13 would be the LCD and, maybe, the Touch ID (although I think the next iPhone SE will have Face ID)

I mean… maaaybe they would do iPhone 12 chassis?

They probably could, but why would they make it easier to buy the cheaper device when it would look just like the 14?

It’s gotta be the 8 shell, or the XR, to (negatively) punish the people who spend less with an old design or (positively) give people a reason to spend more money to get an up-to-date design.

Plus everything is already established for a cheap iPhone: LCD, one camera, old chassis.

It’ll be interesting if they do choose to alienate all the small phone 8 lovers.
