I've decided against it. Hopefully this thread doesn't totally jinx it. If the screen-scratching is really an issue, I'm confident Apple would replace it under the limited warranty (assuming it's within 1 year). Otherwise - I'll be extra careful :)

Thanks guys.

LOL

I truly doubt it they would exchange the ipad under warranty for scratches. Get applecare+ if you wont be able to live with scratches or will end up having to pay for a screen replacement.

The facts are, it's better to have the insurance when you need it than to not have it when you need it.
That is not a fact... it is an opinion. It is NOT always better to have the insurance... particularly when the insurance isn't free.

I have never needed the insurance/warranty for any of my i-devices. Given that track record, even if I end up "needing" it now, and I don't have it, and have to pay full price for a replacement, I am still $1000 ahead of the game. If historically, I incurred damage to my i-devices on a regular basis then I WOULD buy AppleCare.

As I said before, there is no one decision that fits all situations. One must consider their history with their devices and determine if over time they would be better off with or without AppleCare.

Blindly spending money on things that aren't needed is not wise. I thought that was pretty obvious. Apparently not.

I think it is a matter of peace of mind, for some. AC+ gives them that, and it is not blindly spending money. For others, it is a waste, or unneeded expense. I get AC+ for my phones, and this time around for the iPad ( since I opted not to get a back case). I use my iPad in environments that are basically a construction zone. I travel, and the AC+ for me means I am not worried about where I use the iPad.

May be true - unless it becomes a widespread issue. If I go in and complain, no, probably not. If it becomes another "-gate," then yes, I'm sure it will be more common. Think the chips/scuffs on the iPhone 5 bezel.

So you bought AC+ but you don't use a case - that makes a lot of sense, no?

Never a shortage of logic " out there "

The logic is not much difference in price between a decent case and AC+. Have had it since November, seems to work for me. With the 12.9" I did not want the extra weight when using it for 10- 16 hours a day, as for that size it does make a difference. I use it standing up quite a bit. In the past bought a case and not AC+For the 9" iPads. Works for me...perhaps not for you. Besides one of my old iPads had a good case, was dropped a short distance, hit just right and cracked the screen...case did not protect it. Bought a new iPad. So for me the logic is, why spend money on a case when AC+ Gives me better peace of mind. Works for me(and quite a few others I work with), perhaps not others. Besides, the iPad is a lot less expensive than the other equipment we use in the environment...so it is all relative.

I didn't get it at first because I didn't see a point for the iPad. Then I found out the ipp has a $599 screen replacement fee. So I went in and bought it. If you mention your a student or military (I'm both) it is only $80. I am starting to work again (medically retired from the Marines) so I take it out of the house a lot more than I thought I would at first. So $80 for even one accident and it pays for itself 6 times over.

I wish I had bought AC+ for my Apple Watch.
I'm glad I did, have had it replaced twice with no replacement fee (had scratches but also had things actually go wrong with the first two). Now I'm on my third Apple Watch and will probably get it replaced when a new one comes out so I can sell it with a fresh screen/face as there is a couple scratches from daily wear on it

Whoa whoa, what? I was told there was no student discount on AppleCare+? It saved me $100 on my Macbook...

yep walked in store like 25 days or something after buying my ipp and simply asked if there was a student or military discount and was told that both were applicable but only one could be used (not stacked) it took $20 off the total price. I don't know if it is good for all applecare+ across all devices but I know it is good for the iPad pro. If I recall correctly I tried to get it on my iMac when I bought it and I don't remember being offered any discount and I usually ask for military discounts.
