I guess I'm confused as to what a MacBook (nothing) is going to have to offset it between the Air and the 13" Pro.

1.6" smaller so it's cheaper? 7 Cores? (again, cheaper)

This seems like it would just eliminate keeping last year's air around.

In the case of the original Homepod, it was all about a device that the competition blew out of the water with features... namely personal assistant features.
The problem was that the Homepod ended up competing with Amazon's ultra-cheap, subsidised Alexa devices at all - rather than "audiophile" wireless speakers from Bose, Naim, Sonos et. al. which cost the thick end of $1000. Some of those firms have since launched more affordable 'personal assistant' devices - and, of course, Apple now have the HomePod Mini. ISTR Apple's publicity at the time focussing on music and sound quality (with "personal assistant" duties much lower down the list) and it was just bad timing that "Personal assistants" with so-so speakers were trending at the time.

Thing is, Apple could improve Siri, but Amazon and Google smart speakers are always going to be heavily subsidised by advertising and data gathering, so they won't win that war. They need to sell any new Homepod on sound quality (and Apple are getting rather good at speakers).

Personally, though, count me out until they have a 3.5mm input and/or support for streaming from non-Apple devices.

I would definitely be in the market for a 12 inch MacBook. Whilst I like my current MBA it’s a tad to large at 13 inches. I preferred my old 11 inch MBA as it was just the right size.

Any new HomePods would also be an instant buy for me.
I had the original 2015 12" Macbook and the form factor, display, and the keyboard were sublime. However, it WAS way underpowered and when doing anything like Serif or Adobe, the bottom got very hot. I can't imagine video editing. However, an M-series would seem to solve the problems.

You and me both; my 2015 11 inch Air is lovely, but I really new a new laptop, so I'm likely to get the 2022 Air by the end of the year. The small factor is something I value as well. But 2024 (maybe) is a bit too far away for me to continue with this machine which isn't enough for my tasks anymore.

Please give me that quadraphonic HomePod surround matrix that I've been dreaming of.

I love my homepods (and mini) and would love something in the middle for that $150-$200 price range. Hoping my OG homepods keep chugging along for a long time because they work great connected to my TV.
I have 2 HomePods in-use and 8 brand new HomePods still sealed inside the Apple shipping boxes. I bought them for deployment around my house in stereo pairs.

I have 4 of the newer HomePod Minis and tremendous side by side comparison time—Homepod Minis sound like crap. I think I may give them away as Xmas presents.

I think we’re still at the starting line for getting decent smart speakers that work well, integrate consistently and operate reliably, produce sound at a high level of fidelity, and have useful AI.

It is a no brainer that Apple can produce a $199-$249 speaker with a higher end chip and lossless audio, but I don’t see it having the build quality of the original HomePod (fewer speakers cheaper parts). It would be nice to add a USB-C port to enable direct-connect gigabit Ethernet.

I’ve been thinking about unloading the unopened Home Pods on eBay…
