FOUR replacements?! I find that hard to believe. If there were widespread quality control issues, the public outcry would be much bigger. My 16-inch M1 Max arrived and was totally fine.
Truth is stranger than fiction. Have you never told a true story of something that's happened in your life, and it's such a fantastic story that people are looking at you like they think you're lying?

Besides, probability theory dictates. As an example, let's say that the odds of needing a replacement is 1 in 1,000. Then the odds of needing 4 replacements in a row is 1 in 1,000,000,000,000. Extremely low odds, but it is definitely a possible permutation. The odds of winning lotto is similarly insanely low, but hey, we know that people do win the lotto.

I originally ordered my machine - the 16" non-custom Max (32 core/32GB/1TB) in Silver - in mid November and it said to expect it early December. One day I was out doing a field project for class when I happened to check stock levels at the nearest stores after lunch and found that a store 45 mins away had my exact spec for same-day pickup. I considered myself so lucky to get it when I did. Mine did have a problem with the bottom case creaking but I was able to fix that by removing all the screws and retightening them. I shouldn't have had to do that on a $3500 machine but it is what it is. Otherwise it has been flawless.
Mine was creaking as well, I ended up returning it. They didn’t seem too surprised so I’m wondering if this has been a common thing.

Got the 32 GB M1 Pro 14 inch no bother at the start of the year. Hopefully in the next version we can get more TB4 ports as losing the 4th one is slowing me down a wee bit as a photographer. The SD slot taking up space is still a odd choice in exchange for a TB4 port in the age of cameras with dual CF Express B and eagerly awaiting the 2 Gbps CF Express B and CF Express 2.0 standard.
Yep, there was no real reason to remove a TB4 port. Certainly not because of "the SD slot taking up space", there is plenty of space.

I agree....I found a little scratch on mine after a few days but somehow I am convinced I cause it.....and if I didn't, well who cares. It is a tool and tools wear!
True that. One reason I'd love a Cybertruck, is that there's no paint to worry about scratching. If I ever get one, I will beat that thing up, and it will look even sicker than they already do.

When I was looking into what it could be and if anyone had fixed it, it seemed like it might be. I called Apple and they just wanted me to bring it in. I had just sold my 2018 that it replaced and needed it for class so I said I would take it during winter break. I ended up doing the screw trick a couple nights later and that solved the issue.

I understand why they are struggling to meet demand. This retro look is funky but that's it. Old ports, re-igniteted multiple leads. The whole thing is atrocious. This is pathetic. Stick with USB-C and progress "One ring to rule them all" is a great philosophy that had been achieved. This idiocy of "I have a camera thats 12 years old and functionally great" is worthy but for goodness sake, if IT got it's shzzle together you wouldn't be having this problem. That's why USB-C takes the lead for the first time in history. It can be any port. Take a step back and ask yourself about the greater good rather than the "what am I getting". That's what moves us forward.

They brought back the SD Card slot and HDMI. Wow, ground breaking. You make it sound like they removed 2 of the USB-C ports to put USB-A back on the machine. It still has USB-C.

Just got my 16" Max MBP custom order last week. I ordered it the last week of November. This one really reminds me of my 17" which I absolutely loved. I love the huge screen, new keyboard, huge trackpad, physical escape key. The software is excellent, handles my 3 4k monitors buttery smooth. I don't care about the notch, you still get 16:10 below it so... free screen real estate. It's insanely fast and doesn't break a sweat. I only hear fans when I hold it close to my ear. I appreciate the smooth bottom corners when using it in my lap (I recently had a 2017 MBP). The screen is more sturdy than the 2017 model - akin to the earlier models like the 2011 since it's a bit thicker. I don't regret waiting to get it exactly how I wanted it. At the top of the non-gaming laptop options: 2021 MBP is superior to the 2021 XPS 15 (the i9 is insane but lots of fan noise).

A 4th TB4 port on the machine and I would be sorted, even if it shares at the chip level. But nonetheless I can get a dual CF express reader just now or empty the cards onto the laptop first the onto the backup drives. It is a slow down compared to the 2018 machine but the raw performance is there to make up for it when editing.

Yeah, or you could get a hub to add more ports!

I would have loved it if they had also put at least one USB A port on it. USB A is always useful.

But back to topic, I put an order in for SG Max 16" (32GPU/32GB/1TB) on 2nd of November through a large Aussie reseller. Still don't have any idea when I'll get it, after 12 weeks and counting. And apparently neither do they.

You don't need a HDMI dongle. You get USB-C to HDMI cables and USB-C to Display Port cables. I haven't seen a soul use a dongle when you can buy a cable for cheeper.
I have a couple to connect to projectors. There is still a VGA projector I need to connect to.

And here lays the problem. We as consumers lost a TB4 port so a few niche industry wouldn’t have to step foot in the 21st century. Pandering to audio engineers and “smaller” airline companies was disappointing. And I would argue it’s niche in the professional audio scene to use SD.

To say it was for photographers is BS; no one uses SD in photography minus already mentioned newbies.
Updating your plane’s avionics with an SD is just as dated as me updating my OS with a DVD.
I continue to have hope that Apple will update the software so that the SD reader can also read CF type A cards. They're the same hardware, just need different software to support. The question is who at Apple should we beg?

"Three months after launch, Apple still can't ship a flagship computer with a stable OS, though it does have features that help you receive or not receive crappy attention-destroying notifications from every junk app you install"
Why would you install junk apps on your new Apple flagship computer? Just curious really.

My M1 Max just turned up after ordering it at the start of Dec.. So there is quite the delay.. Its a beast thats for sure. Driving its own display and 2 x 4K 27 inch displays as smooth as butter.. I realised just how much the intel MBP was struggling..

You and I wouldn’t, but apparently constant nagging notifications are so important to enough users that we need a bunch of features to add, remove, and manage them, even at the expense of the stability of the operating system itself.

I've had Do Not Disturb on my Mac scheduled to automatically turn off at 3:00am and back on at 3:01am for several operating systems now (because apparently it is forbidden to turn notifications off completely). I'll occasionally see another Mac user that doesn't have these off getting nagged by multiple a minute, sometimes multiple stacking up within seconds of each other. I can't even imagine what that does to one's brain and attention over years. Not being able to complete a ten-minute task without being interrupted thirty times. Apparently this feature set is one of the things that was so important that Apple couldn't also make sure that M1 Macs played nice with USB-C peripherals. I don't think it's happening for all users, but it's a widespread bug and has been around for a year now. It was the first thing mentioned in MacRumors' 3-month M1 Pro/Max MBP review. But at least we have a new feature (Focus) to partially help with all of the damage done by another unnecessary feature Apple made time for at the expense of the OS (notifications).

I don’t see a lot of notifications from Mac apps, but I use a Mac at work and others use Windows. So often when I’m sitting next to someone with a Windows laptop in Conference room or at their desk, there is a steady stream of notifications for every email, slack message or any other event popping up on the bottom right of their screens. It drives me crazy just seeing it that small amount of time, let alone all day long. I try to suggest that they turn some of those notices off, though a surprising number don’t see it as a problem.
