Not sure why ”The Cops will take my phone!” is said every time Digital ID comes up. Are states not issuing physical cards with Digital being the convenient alternative? If so then I’d just do the Apple Pay rules.

Use Apple Pay when you CAN. Use Physical Card when you CAN’T.

Thats how it works for most Apple Pay users so why would it be so different with an ID? Unless you plan on being pulled over every day, then use your Digital ID where accepted and keep your physical ID in the glove box with your insurance.

I can't wait for the Primephonic replacement. I had Primephonic and lost it about 6 months ago thanks to Apple pulling the plug. I have had to go to Idago instead, but Primephonic was significantly better. Waiting ......

lol I'll be dead and buried by the time my backwards country allows you to host things like your driver's licence on a phone. I don't drive anyway so doesn't affect me.

Looks like taping the phone against/near a credit card to receive payment, is an easy way to steal money.

Buy an anonymous, second-hand iPhone, setup to receive $50, tap against someones coat/jacket/purse to receive payments. Spend.

I'm sure Apple will build in some safeguards but what?

I like the first two features. Interested to see how Apple will monetize a service for public domain music.
The composition of many classical music ( but not all, i think some Ravel work isn’t yet) is public domain, NOT the performance and the recording. You can record a new version of a Bach piece without ( obviously) having to pay Bach anything anymore, but you own the performance and the recording ( if that’s the case ) copyrights. Those aren’t public domain until a long time after your death.
New performances of classical music are being recorded everyday throughout the world.

Read. That's why I said I would not use it "in place" of. And suppose digital ID would eventually replace physical ID this issue would need to be addressed. In fact it is not marketed as a backup, but the physical ID would become the backup. Users are thinking about the possibility of not having to bring their wallets anymore. And speeding is only one example. There are people who need to present their IDs multiple times every day. And digital passports will also come in time. So the issue of privacy and device safety should be brought up every time. It has not been brought up nearly often enough. Apple is likely thinking about this too.

I can see the convenience of having my driver's license on my phone, but I would definitely want to have a physical driver's license card in addition to the digital phone one. I wonder if that's going to be possible? If not, I'll stick with the analog version.
It won't be possible quite yet, but this is a first step.

Some Mom & Pop stores won't be set up for a digital driver's license, just like they don't take ApplePay/GooglePay yet. You'll need your physical driver's license to buy beer. There are some stores around me that STILL do not take credit cards - they only take cash and paper checks, and have done it since they opened in the 1950s.

Eventually you'll find the retailers that take digital versions and use those retailers exclusively.

I would like to use Primephonic within the Apple Music app. I don’t like the separate app strategy. I like all kinds of music and prefer everything in 1 app. I would like a separate tab in Apple Music for access to Primephonic.

If I got pulled over by a cop for a traffic violation, the very very last thing I’d want to do is pull out my iPhone in clear sight to do a NFC to NFC connection or even worse- a visual inspection.
Nothing good can come from bringing your iPhone into sight when being roused by a law enforcement officer

Ya know, I thought MAYBE I could get to this thread before someone posted something like this, but alas it was impossible.

First off, the whole thing works like Apple Pay. As stated above, use it when it works for you, if it doesn't use your physical card. An example would be leaving the house without your wallet, or losing your ID while on vacation.

Currently, the law is written in regards to electronic insurance cards, law enforcement can only look at your phone for the purpose of verifying your insurance information. You don't give anyone any sort of consent or any way to build probable cause or search your phone.

Second, beat cops doing traffic stops really aren't interested in what's in your phone. Especially in this day and age. If they're stopping cars it's because they were told to, or have to for things like traffic crashes or blatant DUI's. 99% of the cops on the street today are well aware of the climate they work in, and are only doing traffic enforcement when they absolutely have to. Stopping cars and arresting people just leads to frustration with the court system, or worse, a use of force incident that gets overly scrutinized and leads to mountains of stress. Why stop a car when you get paid the same amount of money to NOT stop cars and not potentially end up shot, or worse, with a group of protesters outside your house and following your family? May as well hide in a nice quiet corner, drink coffee and enjoy the morning. Let that business sort itself out.

I'd like to understand more about the email hosting of private (personal) domains. I'm a GoDaddy customer and I would love a cheaper alternative, and the fact that Apple promotes a strong privacy policy is a major plus. I'd love to understand if Apple's new email option means: a) they will host the domain; b) provide email services that not only work on Apple Mail but also on Outlook, perhaps?; c) do we have a choice of POP3 or IMAP? d) Is the service fee a price per mailbox or is it per domain? (My GoDaddy account comes with 5 email boxes plus I can designate one as a "catch all." Lot of unanswered questions on this feature. But if it merely Apple layering a fee ON TOP of GoDaddy, that would be a hard pass. If Apple is stepping into GoDaddy's place - suddenly I'm very interested in learning more.

Currently have AZ Mobile ID, it’s pretty cool. As already mentioned, I can see it being very convenient for travel. Going to the gym, I can now leave my wallet and car keys at home.

I'd really like to make use of the licenses in my wallet, but who knows when my state would adopt such a feature...

Driver's license in Wallet App is going to be a wonderful feature - especially when you are traveling and have to go through the airport security (TSA) while showing your boarding pass. It'll be nice not to worry about carrying anything. It is all on your iPhone. I’m pretty in the future sure it’ll be implemented on an Apple Watch too.

I’m hoping Nevada gets put on the list soon for the digital ID app. It will make traveling so much easier in here, Las Vegas, NV.

Another great benefit: You never have to worry about your driver license/ID being stolen. 🤩
Having just returned from international travel, I’d also be ok with passports landing in Wallet. The option of zero paperwork when traveling sounds fantastic.

Why is everything so easily and seamlessly implemented in the US and takes years to get to Europe? You get stupid fines if you forget your IDs and Driver's License here. With both being on the Watch, nothing like that would need to happen.

But...the problem with using the phone as ID is the possibility of getting the phone taken from you while it is unlocked, as when stopped by the police for speeding, etc. One option I thought of is to enable Guided Access when power button is triple pressed, so the phone will be locked on the Wallet app. Otherwise Apple must implement something like this for digital ID to be viable. I would be unwilling to risk having to hand over my whole phone even if it is locked on the ID because it is still an expensive and important device, but without the lock, I don't think I will use it in place of the regular ID.
You don’t hand your phone over. They take a scan like Apple Pay on a handheld reader. That then shows on their screen your ID, which is confirmed on their side. If they took your phone and looked at it and didn’t authenticate you could give them (possibly faked) screenshots of an ID and it would work just as well.

I used to think people who worried about this kind of thing being problematic were spending too much money on tin foil. However, my opinion has changed in the last few years. This is incredibly convenient at first. But there is a temptation to eventually make this mandatory. Either outright, or deliberately punishing those who do not get on board.

That ends up giving lots of arbitrary power over the individual. Government can cancel your ability, perhaps, to have a valid drivers' license with a simple switch. To get all the information they want from Apple. Is Apple complying now? No. But maybe they will.

I'd accept this ONLY if it were a neutral third party. Backed up by some kind of encryption with no single controlling entity. Anything else is just putting in place the functionality for totalitarian abuse. Which is already underway in China.
Apple gets no information on your ID. Your ID is stored on your phone securely. Apple has no way of getting your information and giving it to anyone. Physical ID isn’t going away either, they use this in addition to physical ID (you do have to scan a physical ID to get it into the wallet). And government can cancel your license now. You get pulled over, they check your license is valid. This is literally no different. What do you get out of using your physical license if it gets cancelled? You can still buy booze because they don’t check it and you look young enough to get carded each time?

I can see the convenience of having my driver's license on my phone, but I would definitely want to have a physical driver's license card in addition to the digital phone one. I wonder if that's going to be possible? If not, I'll stick with the analog version.

It does not replace the physical card. In fact physical cards are required, you have to scan it to get it into the wallet.

yaaaaaaaaay. I get to wait on our state government to drag their feet on adopting new tech quality-of-life improvements.

And are TSA agents really going to be trained and expected to know which states adopt this standard, and which ones don't? Can they realistically be expected to? "Sorry, sir. I need to check to see if the ID on your phone is issued in a state that allows this sort of thing." 10 seconds x 500 throughout the day (more?) = 83.33 minutes added to the line because they're can't just be an across the board federal level acceptance of digital ID.

Other than that. It's really great that adding an ID to Wallet is becoming a thing :)
The TSA will know if the state they are in accepts it when they get issued a reader to read phones and they get told they can accept Apple Wallet IDs. They don’t care about your destination state (so it’s still on you to ensure you have ID that works in each state you travel in). If they accept Wallet IDs they don’t care which state it’s issued in any more than they would for physical ID, it just needs to be acceptable ID.

I would not want to give my unlocked iPhone to anyone (including LEO). If they clone it, all your banking info is immediately available for access by the clone. Good luck with that.

A dead battery ends your trip before it even started....

Still waiting for these things to be fixed:

White icons and text on white background in Control Center

Blaming people for having the "wrong" wallpaper or application open when using Control Center is not the solution.

Spotify all the way for me on streaming music.
Unlike ALL the others they allow people to use both folders and play lists.
On top of that they handle classical music just fine.
My listening is at least 90-95% classical music and they have been very good, no need to add another service.

Not just them, but who is conducting, playing the music, right?
Music that is public domain only refers to music by composers that has been dead for more than 70 years. The recordings themselves are owned by publishers and they license them to streaming services.
And even performances of Bach are copyrighted, even though the scores might no longer be.
The music itself is free if the composer has been dead for more than 70 years but printed scores are owned by publishers and recordings is owned by the label.

Having your Drivers License in Wallet sounds nice but it will take years to be universally accepted everywhere.

The Square-like payments also sounds interesting and came out of nowhere. I'm interested to see how this functions.
