Imagine if Sir Ive saw fit to open this pencil gadget API to third-party options. The original Apple mouse was hobbled and didn’t advance in features until it was connected via an open standard: USB.

I was wondering why it seemed to be having difficulty on initial use, but now I know. Working quite well at the moment. The responsiveness seems to be improved over version 1.

Is there any way to check the pencil in settings to see what firmware it has? I picked one up yesterday, but iPad doesn’t arrive until today sometime. Just curious.

Only one side.
Pretty sure the pencil has to be paired to see the firmware. When paired, the info shows up in Settings>General>About>Apple Pencil

[doublepost=1541692672][/doublepost]Does anyone know if the extra tips that came with the original pencil work on the new one?

They look identical though I haven't tested it. I bought extra tips for my first pencil that I never even used. If someone is wearing theirs down, they do some serious drawing, daily, all day long because I never had to replace mine in two years of what I would say is normal use.

Regarding battery duration, it is reported that the battery is smaller (its lighter too) but I draw last night for hours and never lost battery. I think that because when you put down the pencil, you are attaching it to the charger so its always adding power when not in your hand. I really don't think that this is going to be a problem for most people.

I've had to replace the tip on one of my two Pencils once but I do use it a LOT (for writing, not drawing). It didn't look too worn out but the Pencil stopped working reliably and changing the tip fixed that.

do you actually always do that? I don't think I will have the discipline or will find it convenient.

With my original Apple Pencil I never had to change the tip. Is that something people frequently do?

$129, another %30 price increase

Vote with your wallet. Ranting on a forum won't lead to lower prices.

Is it finally possible to turn off the Pencil? The first version goes in standby mode automatically when not used and wake up as soon as a vibration is detected. This potentially drains the battery quickly.

I've left the pencil unused for months at a time and it still had 10% battery left.

How is it not convenient to just place it in the magnetic spot. It snaps right into place.

The battery life is far less than the original. Example: from 100% to 96% in around 3 minutes - just taking a couple of quick notes. Same test with original pencil and the battery doesn’t drop at all. Disappointing.

But if you put the Pencil on the iPad when you're done it charges, so even if the battery is smaller you shouldn't run out of it frequently

I didn’t necessarily say I do. But again, why would it use a completely different wireless charging method than other Apple devices?

It's likely an issue of getting a Qi standard charger setup into the edge of such a device. Far far easier to do so with your own methods when you aren't limited by a standard.

Knowing this kinda glad i did not purchase the new pencil and chose to use my old one.

How does it attach to the iPad if you have a case around it?
Do you have to take the case off to attach the pen so that it will charge?
Or are the magnets strong enough to work through the case?
Or do people need to buy special cases?

So you're thinking that Tim Cook was sitting at his desk thinking how he can boost net income beyond the current 80 billion a year, and his solution was to remove a 25 cent piece of plastic from a product that makes up .001% of Apple's revenue? Yeah that's probably it.

If it is 25 cents per tip and they sell 5 million pencils, that is 1.25 million dollars. Even if they sell one pencil, it is 250k saved. I don't know why you think Tim Cook the financial wizard doesn't think of these things. For instance, stopping giving dongles for head phones, requiring the purchase of dongles for USB-C. These things all add up to millions of dollars for Apple.

Obviously they DO think about things like the tip. First it was there, now it's not. Someone made both decisions. This is precisely why you are not a CFO... You clearly don't think of the things that make companies more profitable.

Those asking, I never replaced the tip on my original Apple Pencil. I didn't do a lot of drawing with it but probably spent an hour or so a week in Pro Create. Tip held up fine from release day to the release of Pencil 2.0.

I've only played about 15 minutes with the new one so far but it feels fine to me and double tap to erase is a nice addition.

I wonder if poetic is making an ipad/pencil lower case. I have one for my 12.9 and love it. It holds the pencil just fine. They might be able to figure out out a cutout system to keep the pencil nestled against the ipad while it is part of the case. I’ve had my pencil for 3 years and never replaced the tip but I’m not a heavy user. Mine only lasts a couple days before it has to be charged whether or not I use it.

Time will tell if they fixed this issue. Would've been better if the battery is replaceable like the Surface Pen and lasts months rather than ~8 hours making it less disposable.

"So, mine and my co-workers pencils died from what I can guess is lack of use and the battery dies down past the point the charger chips will let it charge. Does anyone know if I can jump start the charging process (I have done this before with a small trickle charge to get a lithium battery up to the safe charging point) using any of those 4 test points visible through one section of the tube?"
