I did that last year. Ended up buying an iPod Nano because I couldn't go a month without some sort of iPod.
Did you unlock your iPhone first? I'd like to sell mine soon but my baseband is upgraded so AFAIK it's currently impossible to unlock :(

I couldn't unlock it, so I just sold it jailbroken. I got a little less than 400 for my 8GB, which isn't too bad.

I am REALLY thinking about getting a Touch. I can't stand being w/o my iPhone. I was at the movies today, and saw a lot of iPhones...I was sooo jealous! :(

I wonder why all the complaints always come from Americans. Is the iphone the only phone on AT&T? Is is the only one on AT&T dropping calls. You never hear complaints from other iphone users in other countries.

Well in my case just like OP I was frustrated due to various issues with the iPhone - dropped calls, out-of-network for no reason, hopeless battery life etc. 5 months ago I got myself a Nokia E71, I am still on AT&T network - same place, same number - haven't had any issues whatsoever and as an added bonus Exchange sync works great, and battery life is really sweet.

It is not like the iPhone has no flaws - people who mostly use it as an entertainment device can live with it but in an corporate environment it is crap - BB or Nokia rule there.

Yes, you do. I am on Rogers and there have been MULTIPLE occasions where my iPhone didn't ring but someone had called (I'd get the text saying I missed the call, but nothing in the phone).

Sometimes my calls drop in places with complete signal strength.

I like the phone so I'm willing to put up with it. As well, I don't get too many calls and none are super important so it's not a huge issue. If I needed to use my phone constantly the iPhone would be at the bottom of the list unfortunately.

I have never had any of these problems. And I travel very frequently all over the world. Iraq, Jordan, Italy, UAE, France and all over the US. I am not unlocked or Jailbroken though. Sounds like a combination of hardware and network failures. Hope you can get it worked out though. I could not part with my iPhone though!

Well I'm on Fido and I don't get such issues. Still doesn't change the fact most of the complaints are coming from AT&T.

When this happens it is most likely your iPhone was using data and couldn't get 3G so it used EDGE. You can recieve a call and use EDGE at the same time.

I am not sure why people try to make this issue one or the other.

The answer is BOTH.

A lot of iPhones out there on the street have a VERY hard time managing the network it is connected to. I know mine does at times in certain spots.

I can be standing there and it will go from 3G to NO ICON up there. (But the bars are still there.), then to a O, then back to 3G.

And if you are on the phone when this happens, it drops the call most of the time.

And, to make matters worse, in many areas, AT&T's network is garbage.

It isn't one or the other. It's both.

The OP said the same thing happens in multiple markets. If I remember correctly, people have iPhones in New York, Chicago, and Dallas without issues like these (including myself, and millions of other customers). Is it still the network?

It's the network, I live in nyc but m currently in Boston for the weekend, I had a few problems but after a full restore as a new iPhone. Not as a backup, then called at&t and told then my problem. They helped me out and now I have full bars and 3g everywhere, I also did these steps when I was in NYC and now my iPhone works perfectly.

Edit:
And if that doesn't work AT&T coming out with the new iPhone and 3.0 so you'll be stright.
Now about the pre, I haven't read the threads about it. I'm not interested in sprint, I had sprint, tmobile, tried verizon. I didn't like sprints service, or tmobile, verizon was ok but to way pricey. I have AT&T 3 lines all iPhones unlimited txt and data and 700 minutes. I'm paying a whopping 170 w/ tax. Let's see tmobile, sprint 3 lines =200+, verizon I don't even want to mention it.

The same here in Scotland too, The phone itself must share some responsibility and cant all be network related:( Other phones work fine in the same area
