If you think you'll get 4x the pixels for a mere $500 extra, you're in cloud cuckoo land. If Apple were to release a retina TBD with that resolution, I would be gob smacked if it came in at under $3k.

If the iMac goes Retina, keep in mind the iMac sales volume will help keep costs down and thus prices lower for consumers.

Well it wouldn't be any cheaper for an iMac! I know everyone would love retina displays that size, but it's just not going to happen yet. The MBPr has difficulties driving its display as it is, ad a retina TBD/iMac would have, what, 3 times as many pixels. I know you could have a beefier GPU, but it just ain't gonna work.

It's really really not going to happen, don't get your hopes up.

Also, just for fun, google "4k monitor" bearing in mind that 4k is a standard that people use currently (cinema, filming), so should be more widely adopted than Apple's own sizes, and that Apple's sizes are even bigger than 4k!!

Well, I think I'm gonna go for a TBD this week. Even if a Retina Display ends up appearing, there's no way my (or any) MBA will be able to drive it smoothly so it's irrelevant to me. I also looked at the rMBP in-store and I really couldn't see a big difference (to my eyes much less than between an iPad 2 and 3).

Even if it gets updated with USB3 it won't make any real-word difference to me, as the 2012 MBA has the ports anyway.

Bear in mind a revised TBD could also feature slightly tweaked resolution, less reflective glass, etc.

I cannot imagine a slightly tweaked resolution - I think if they were to make the screen more dense they would do it properly and go the full hurrah.

I'm not using the screen for professional use so perhaps the glossy screen isn't as big a deal for me as for some. Primary use will be to assist with basic multi-tasking and video consumption.

Even if there is an update beyond USB3, I'm not sure it will be worth me paying over £100 more for the benefit. The only thing that will have me peeved is a redesign, but the current screen looks much slicker than the iMac already so can't imagine what they would do with it..

Here's hoping for a silent refresh tomorrow :D

First off, the flash in most phones and MP3 players isn't really all that fast. It isn't setup the same way as SSD's are, so even if it had a USB3.0 connection it wouldn't use the bandwidth. Think of it as like all of those cheap USB3.0 Flash drives that can't even saturate USB2.0 bus let alone USB3.0. All it would do is add cost.

Even the flash in SSDs aren't all that fast either. A SSD is fast because it's 8-16 flash chips essentially in a RAID-0 array.

Agreed. I just wasn't getting into the point of how SSD controllers work and their multiple connections to the various SSD chips and how they all work in tandem to create the bandwidth..... blah blah blah....

Point is.... All phones and tablets do not incorporate expensive flash controllers like SSD's, so the bandwidth of USB3.0 is lost on these devices...

I think it would be a huge disservice for Apple to exclude USB. I think we need to remember a lot of people use their displays as their hubs. For instance, I have my MM-1s, external hard drive and a Apple iPhone cable attached to the back of my display. Rather than having to plug in each to my laptop, it's one simple connection to the display. I think adding USB 3 support would be a natural progression.

I just sold my 24" on eBay and just waiting until 10/4 to pull the trigger.

Yeah, they aren't getting rid of the USBs. One of the selling features of the TB display is that it acts as a hub. For some, (possibly most) TB display owners, Retina would not be enough of an upgrade if they got rid of the "hub" aspect of the display.

No this makes absolutely no sense, just like all of your other posts in this thread about how USB of any type will be removed any time soon.

I never said it is going to happen anytime soon. But many things point towards a future hardware with limited wire connectivity. If TBD doesn't get updated in the next year, I think it is very possible to see the next iteration without a USB hub.

Ethernet port is gone, USB and FW are the next candidates.

We've seen it before. People complaining how they won't be able to live without a SuperDrive. And that was a year ago, when we were speculating about the next MBP. And now?

"Plugging in" peripheral devices is going to become obsolete. Sooner or later.

Went to purchase a TBD from 2 Apple Stores today and neither had stock, and both claimed that new stock was due to arrive in 1-2 weeks. How accurate this time-frame is, I don't know, but it looks like an update is imminent.

Can someone explain the significance of 10/4? I'm aware of 9/20 but not 10/4. Sorry if I missed something.

This is my bad, not trying to distribute false information. I swore I read in a few places 10/4 was a potential event date...but I can't find it anywhere. There is a rumored event in October (iPad Mini and iMac), but I don't believe there is a firm date.

The 4th is my cutoff holding off. I figure, I will be covered under the refund policy if something comes out later in the month. I'm getting impatient. :p

What I would like Apple to include in the new display:

30" for the same price (unlikely..)
HDMI-in
Optical Out
Thinner

If 2 of these become reality I will be happy.

I finally got my rMBP and I love it. I'm now itching to get a 27 inch display, but I'm trying to hold off as it seems like the new TB display is close. I know that no one actually knows when that will be, but I'm curious as to how Apple typically announces these things. Must there be a formal "keynote" or could we wake up one morning to find a newer version of the display in the Apple store?

I'm in the same boat too. Right now I'm using my 2011 27" iMac in target display mode until I sell it. But I would really like to have USB 3 and the docking capabilities.

I hadn't realised it was time to start lusting over TB Displays again......

Two things I want from a TBD:

1. USB3

2. Input Connectivity. Thats my only problem with my 2011 iMac, (and the TBD's). Why on earth cant I use the display on my 2010 mbp, or my pc, or my xbox? It so artificially handicaps the display....I was toying with the idea of eventually getting two of these lovely displays for the use with my iMac and other devices, but I can't justify that level of investment for the display as is.

Do :apple: think I am going to upgrade my mbp to work with this display? Do they want to keep the sales of these displays limited? All it has done is stop me purchasing.....

I've been waiting patiently for Kanex, or similar to come out with an adapter, but they seem very quiet.

I guess :apple: nows what they are doing.

/rant over

:)

Nothing will happen until October, as all the hype / pub related to the iPhone 5 needs to cool down so that new pub can take over, like iMac / Mac mini / TB Display refresh...

Damn it!

I'm not sure a retina version will be released at this time. 2560x1440 is the max resolution for most macs without dual link DVI. Does thunderbolt have the physical capability of allowing anything over this?

DisplayPort 1.2, the signals that runs parallel with TB gives out at 3840x2160

i would not complain about a 30" Thunderbolt Display running at that resolution
