Display stock is running thinner at the moment. All my local Apple stores and Best Buy Apple Markets are completely out and don't know when any inventory will be available. They are also out on Best Buy.com in the Regular LED display, not the thunderbolt model, however it is on sell.

After hearing back from MacRumors - I caved and picked up a display yesterday. If anything comes out in the next few weeks I'm covered.

ACDs are hard to predict. I wouldn't expect an update in October.

In the meantime, I get to enjoy this awesome display!

How was this statement substantiated? Insider info or what?

I'm guessing based off the information MacRumors has seen/heard, or more accurately, what they haven't seen/heard.

We've all been speculating we would see an ACD update since it is rumored that the iMac will be updated soon. Who knows at this point.

If it was for personal use, I might have waited a little longer, but it's for business purposes and that being the case I decided to pull the trigger. Of course I will be checking the sites over the next 14 days just in case.

My take on the USB comments earlier in this thread:
Apple just adopted USB 3.0 this year. Did they adopt Blu-Ray just before dropping the disc drive? No. It wouldn't make any sense.

Anyway, what if they made the MagSafe plug interchangeable with a more solid connector for a next generation [externally powered] Mac Mini?

Has anyone considered that there current Macbooks may not be capable of smoothly driving a display with a high res than the current TBD?

From testing instore, the 2012 MBA doesn't feel completely smooth all the time (but still very usable).

I think this is a driver problem. See also:

The HD 4000 IGP supports 3 displays.

I think the dGPU and IGP drivers in Lion & Mountain Lion are not optimized.

Interesting. Nevertheless, even if the MBA hardware is technically capable, I cannot see Apple extending functionality of 2012/pre-2012 (or ML) Macs.

I'm not as knowledgeable with the ins and outs of the OS as someone like yourself is - but is what you're saying that the reason the TBD does not run completely smooth with the MBA is due to software restrictions?

It would be interesting to hear your take of the 2012 MBA being able to drive a significantly higher-res screen than the TBD :)

Hmmmm the big UK tech retail chain Dixons/PC World/Curries has suddenly changed their Thunderbolt Display product on their websites to "APPLE NEW Thunderbolt 27" LED-Backlit Monitor" Today... Adding the word NEW.

However it still displays old TBD spec etc... Could be an indication of very imminant release? As they've all been out of stock for a while now...

You do realize that retail stores often make mistakes. They could've added the word new to differentiate between the old ACD and the TBD or just to entice customers who don't know any better.

Dropping FW I can see. Dropping USB 2 only ports I can see. Replacing both FW and USB 2 with USB 3 is much more likely.

B&H did have the lowest price at $949. But I saw at Amazon the price is now in the $929 range. Indications where that stock is available.

My local Best Buy has one on display in their Apple section for $949 as well.

I hope Apple comes up with something soon. I just received a 3x reward points offer from Best Buy because its my birthday and I would love to use it on a new Thunderbolt Display! haha

But you pay sales tax at a local retail store. Depending on the tax rate, that could be around $50.

My taxes were actually closer to $80 (Texas). Personally, it was worth it for me since I have 60 days to return/exchange. Which will be nice if there turns out to be a refresh.

Nobody knows.

I would say most likely next year end of winter/spring time. The 27" imac isn't even available to order til Dec. which certainly takes priority over the TBD. I'm just waiting for the update before dropping on a second one.

Doubt it, I think it's going to be a lot sooner, possibly around the arrival of the 27in iMac. With the whole Mac line (except for the Mac Pro?) finally being upgraded to USB 3.0 and MagSafe 2.0 (the MacBooks, of course), it only makes sense we'll see it sooner than later. I also wouldn't be surprised if it had the new design of the iMacs and the similar pseudo-anti-glare screen.

EDIT, not that late March/early April is too far or outta the question, I just think it might come a tad sooner.

Mr. Cook said during the earnings report that the initial stock of iMacs in December will be pretty small, so they are expected to sell out fast.

From (Mac)rumors we also "know" that the volume issues are due to the manufacturing process of the new 27" screen and it's my guess that the initial screen stock shall be used for iMacs only.

I would therefore speculate that the new Displays will be delayed at least until end of February 2013, which is unfortunate as this is the next thing on my shopping list
