As of right now, I see very little reason why Apple needs a Apple branded display.

Because price/quality and it matches the iMac for dual display users.

YES! I don't care if it's 4K (which will render UI too small on a 27" screen without HiDPI scaling to 1080p).

Just update the design and ports.

4K works well on 21.5"

1080p scaling would be too big on a 27" monitor.

Good! Kill it with fire! it's ridiculously overpriced compared with competing options on the market today, and isn't even compatible with USB-C.

It's insanity that Apple has gone about a year and half not even selling a display to pair with a "late 2013 Mac Pro" or retina Macbook Pro that supports 4K resolutions.

While they're at it, Apple also needs to kill the Airport Express and give people a version that supports wireless 802.11ac standards.

Any estimates on what this might cost? I would like to move to a Thunderbolt display on my Mini and move my current monitor to another machine. I have a 25" IPS display now but the resolution is lower than the Apple display should be and the one it will replace on my other machine has a home to go to as well. Anyhow, wonder what we are looking at for cost.

Wanted to add, A nMac Pro with D500 GPU's cannot adequately drive 2 x 4k screens when using Logic Pro with the arrange screen on one and the mixer window on the other. Massive frame rate issues.

Why not just select HiDPI from the resolution menu? (Which would almost certainly be enabled by default on an apple display).

It'll be hard for Apple to sell these monitors based on brand name and the "Retina" buzzword. I can buy a 4K 27" monitor for around $500-600. Unless it's 5K, I don't see Apple selling these overpriced monitors that well.

ALL WILL BE FORGIVEN IF THEY RELEASE A 5K THUNDERBOLT DISPLAY.
Unless there will be two models, it won't be 5K. The kaby lake news update says it can't pull 5K, so they are not going to make a screen that can't be supported by their laptops.

Just like Apple made printers, cameras and gaming consoles, I don't think there is a need either for a Apple branded display. Probably for those who just want to have a complete setup. LG makes them for Apple, so why not just buy one of those?

I bought my 2013 27" iMac partially to use as a display in target mode once the machine slows down too much, so while I may not be in the audience who truly needs this now, having Apple update the thunderbolt display would be a nice nod towards Mac users.

My Thunderbolt display has caused me nothing but headaches over the years. It's been by far the worst Apple product I've ever owned. I hope they address the problems in the next revision.

Hopefully if they switch to Thunderbolt 3, it'll still be backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 2 computers. I've started seeing some Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapters but they seem to be for attaching Thunderbolt 2 devices to Thunderbolt 3 computers and it's unclear if they would allow Thunderbolt 3 devices to attach to Thunderbolt 2 computers.
You would still need some sort of adapter, or at least, a special cable, as the connections themselves are physically different. Having said that, I very much doubt it either way.
