Is the optical implementation gone for good or will it come in the future?

Maybe its called Thunderbolt for now because its electrical now, and when optical LightPeak comes out, it will be called Lightningbolt. :D

The next upgrade from copper, but not quite light could be called:

Thunder

then next one can be called Lightning.

Eventually when quantum computing is invented, maybe the new port could be called "StormCloud" or something.

Once they move from copper to optics, it's going to be called

LIGHTNINGBOLT!

Damn it. You stole my thunder :(

thunderbolt |ˈθəndərˌbōlt|

noun poetic/literary
a flash of lightning with a simultaneous crash of thunder.
• a supposed bolt or shaft believed to be the destructive agent in a lightning flash, esp. as an attribute of a god such as Jupiter or Thor.
• used in similes and comparisons to refer to a very sudden or unexpected event or item of news, esp. of an unpleasant nature : the full force of what she had been told hit her like a thunderbolt.
• informal a very fast and powerful shot, throw, or stroke.

Next time, use your dictionary.... :;)

Personally, I prefer names that are unique and won't produce irrelevant google results.

FireWire, LightPeak, TiVo, MacBook, Flickr, iPad, iPod, iMac, iAnything = Good
Mighty Mouse, Thunderbolt, Windows 7, MS Live, Droid = Bad

In the end then a popular product takes control of the name but then what if you're looking for a Thunderbolt phone or need help with the Touch Pad on your HP notebook? IMO its bad for business.

Ok, that's your perception, an I agree with you, unique names are far better...

"Thunderbolt" sounded like a brand of tramp's brew to me when i first heard it. Suppose we'll all get used to it tho. Light peak sounded far more futuristic to me.

I dont know how I'd use it other than maybe for an external HDD. Well I'm getting a 15" MBP next spring as a graduation present so maybe there will be an even better (and useful) technology then.

How about a docking station? One Thunderbolt cable to a box with connections for a monitor, usb, ethernet, firewire, and audio?

That could also be built into a monitor, so you come home, set your MBP down on your desk and plug in the Magsafe and the Thunderbolt cable to your monitor that has usb/ethernet/firewire/audio built in.
