Tiger Gold Master?

i'm even happier that i did the preorder with amazon and saved a little money. this means i'll have the software soon, like i had hoped. very nice news indeed.

Sounds good, looks like it's time to lay down some cash again.

So...Tiger's done and OS X isn't being updated as fast now. What screenshots and reports can we drool over now? iSync? I'm scared :(

It still seems sketchy to think that they could have CDs/DVDs burnt, printed, packaged, and shipped by April 15th. That only gives them 2 weeks to get all that done.

Apple likes to unveil new OSes with lots of fanfare and promos. I don't think they'd release it without it being available.

...or have they sped up their production process now?

P.S. Any word on Server?

The packaging and printing could have already been done ahead of time. All they'd have to do is stamp out the CDs/DVDs and package them, which would only take about a week or two, and then a few days to ship the boxes out.

Anyone here who is a developer feel like commenting (as long as it won't violate the NDA).

I mean, how does it "feel" compared to Panther, speed wise, boot time wise.

Any cool new backgrounds or screensavers?

Better samba and ftp configuration (so you won't have to use a third party GUI)?

iChat A/V finally get profile support or animated icons?

Just curious :)

Panther was announced on the 8th of October and available on the 24th in stores, although a few folks that ordered online had it delivered as early as the 22nd.

April 1st? and on a Friday?

As early as April 1st? Really...could this be a joke? :)

Anyway...why announce something considerably large on a friday when most media coverage won't happen till next week?

And with NAB in 2 weeks...

This all seems rushed...very un-Apple in my opinion.

Releasing to all us fools...

I think they're announcing it on April Fool's Day because they're releasing the operating system to all us fools that were dumb enough at one time to use Winblows.

Maybe if it's said one *more* time, in one more thread: Tomorrow is Apple's 29th BIRTHDAY. Got it?

I wondered the same thing, but the actual disc would be the only thing left to stuff in the box. All of the marketing, documentation, etc., was probably locked in and ready for printing a few weeks ago. (Admittedly, I know next to nothing about Apple's supply chain, but the cracker jacks and the prize are seldom made in the same place at the same time.)

Oh Yeah! ... Good way to start Q2. What good timing, it's payday today, pay for a new mac tomorrow (pending the release a new iMac G5 with Tiger pre-installed) ;)

We have a saying in our own software development shop: You can pick the features or the release date, but not both. In other words, you can declare a final date and make the software as good as possible by that date or you can keep working on it until every desired feature has been implemented and every known issue has been resolved, with only an educated guess as to when that will be. So you either declare the completion date or you wait for it. I wonder which method Apple uses.

Apple declaring today that Tiger is finished is not the same thing as declaring that they finished it today. Even though Apple has had problems in the past getting adequate stock to market -- iPod mini -- the guys in Cupertino know a thing or two about meeting deadlines.

If I had to guess, I would say that Apple knew a month ago that it was close enough to gold master to start putting the retail wheels in motion. I'm not saying I think there's a 100 percent chance of an announcement tomorrow, but it appears Apple will land solidly within its only announced projection -- the first half of 2005.

Relax, fanboys!

Well the CDs are pressed, not burned. So you can press a crap load of CDs/DVDs in one day. Like the other people said, the documentation, retail boxes, etc have probably all been printed maybe as long as a month ago and are just waiting for this golden master stage to arrive. Now the code can go to the factory where the CDs/DVDs are pressed and start pumping out copies. I'd imagine you can get at least 5,000 boxed versions of Tiger produced in one day easily. I'm sure there's more than one press.

I just hope it finds invisible files

Um... yeah. Hit command+f, change options to name contains and enter in the name of any invisible file on your system, add an option for visibility = invisible, and search home, computer, anything. You won't get a single result. I'd call that a bug (help even says this will work).

8A420 only had one known issue - it wouldn't boot on 1.33 GHz iBooks with SuperDrives. 8A425 fixed that, then they must've found one other problem before 8A428.

Well, ThinkSecret knew April 1st would be the release date early on (late Feb I think), and as far as I know the seed notes have no mention of any issues - What it looks like they're doing to me is looking at the issues needed to fix, setting a date, then working their butts off getting it completed.

Go get it is what I can say without NDA issues, it is the best Mac OS X so far, by and far.

Sweet...

This is great. I still wouldnt buy it straight away. Need to give it time to breathe before I take a swig....(bugs you know). ;)

I would really like to hear some developer's views.
Is this the build that someone recently said was close but not quite?

Tiger has been in lockdown at Apple for the last 2 weeks. The last three builds releases were addressing a few minor bugs. Like in 8A414 there was the sleep issue with PB's where networking stopped function on wake up. It turned out to be a conflict with the sound driver. That was fixed in 8A420. As of 8A420 the list of know bugs could be counted on 1 hand.
I never got to see 8A425 so I can't comment on it or this 8A428 build.
But with the short gaps between build numbers one can expect that the GM release was imminent.

I wish amazon.com sold the family pack.

In fact, I wish the Apple retail stores sold the family pack on the day of release. Based on past experience, I don't think they will have it in stock.

I don't find it faster or slower On my PBook.

The coolest screen saver is the rss feed one.

Think Secret's credibility

I am very excited for this, this is the first time I am really anticipating an OS. Gonna head out to LA from Santa Barbara for this, so hopefully they have some cool gifts.

Also, this continues to prove to Think Secret is in fact a very credible source for apple rumors.

WoooHoo..I have been counting the days...Lets hope it is true. Is this 100% correct. Any developers wanna reassure me.

Apple uses Software Update liberally. I would think they are releasing Tiger on 4/15 no matter what, and we may see 10.4.1 or some small/specific updates very soon after that.

IIRC, when FileMaker 7 was released, an updater came out before many people even got their version of 7.0. Not that Apple and FMP behave the same... just proves that such things happen.
