I agree, Tiger is very buggy... getting annoying.. 10.3.8 was perfect, no real huge problems..

Just a thought here before you take all the time to revert back to 10.3 and particularly if you only did an Upgrade to 10.4.

It might be worthwhile (after making the relevant backups that you're going to need for 10.3 anyhow) doing a Tiger Archive & Install over your current system and then using the full Combo updater to go to 10.4.2. That should only take an hour of your time and would save all the reinstalling etc... Might be worth it in case it's just a few borked System files causing your problems.

Ok, so 10.4.2 is a big step in the right direction, but it's still very buggy.

Here are some of my outstanding bugs:

1. Spotlight does not index messages in the Trash folder of mail

Hmm it works for me! :p

Hate to say it, as it is so cliche, but at least we aren't dealing with Windows.

Even as the person who started this thread, I couldn't agree more.

I love Apple and their products, and feel sorry for people stuck in the conformist Windows mentality.

But we pay a premium price because Apple is a premium company. And we are only helping Apple--and ultimately ourselves--by being a very demanding customer base. By pushing Apple to produce their very best, we all win.

1. I think this is a feature, not a bug. Why search among things that are trashed?

Indexing the trash is very useful... unless you can guarantee that you (or someone on your computer) won't accidentally (or otherwise) trash a file that you need. Why should I have to do a Spotlight search, then separately check the trash?

That said, Spotlight indexes my trash, I just checked it.

And I haven't had any problems with Tiger, in fact some of the previous printing problems I had are now gone - Panther sometimes lost the connection to my printer, Tiger hasn't yet. :D

I think calling Tiger a "complete mess" is being a bit melodramatic...it's not Windows, after all... ;)

I think I am the only one who since 10.4.0 Has noticed Nothing... and has not had 1 Problem.

I just wrote zeros to the Hard drive, and made sure I did a perfectly clean install of Tiger. And everything is perfect here.

10.4.2 seems the exact same for me, more or less...

The same here.. Clean install, no problems.

Just one prominent bug (anyone else have this?):

I cannot rearrange the order of login items to dictate which order they should launch in. Anyone else have this problem?

Everything else is just dandy ;-)

tiger is, in my opinion, the buggiest OS X release since 10.1. quite annoying. i've faith that they will correct the issues, I'd just like it to happen faster...

uhhh, did you mean 10.0?

I use Panther and my Maxtor one touch all the time and have never had a problem.
It was from the initial release of Panther, updates soon fixed the problems. The mess also involved File Vault in some way if I remember correctly.

iChat AV is a joke.

It won't even work on a T1 to T1 connection.

Of course it does, and it works perfectly. I use it at work and at home with a few other users 1000 miles away and down the street. Ask your IT guy to configure your routers to allow it before you spread the rumor that "it's a joke".

well, quartz extreme only deals with 2D right? how are they different then?

Still sounds as though there are quite a few issues with Tiger, even after this 10.4.2 release, and even though Apple supposedly took their time with it! I hope Apple can fix everything up for you guys sooner rather than later, but in my own selfish little world, I'm happy I'm still running Panther.

I'm still having a few performance issues. 10.4.x is faster than 10.3.9 but not reliably or consistently.

However, 10.4.2 is so much better than 10.3.2 or 10.3.8 or a number of releases were for me. Things work pretty well overall unlike Panther. The only time Panther worked fairly well was with 10.3.4 and 10.3.8.

Agreed.

I actually haven't noticed Tiger being any buggier than previous versions. YMMV, I guess.

Yup. I'll have to be dragged back to panther.
That being said, Apple still has that annoying network disconnect bug to work out... :(

Well, I don't use Trash for storage, not Finder's Trash nor Mail's (which is what the OP is complaining about).

My Trash (and Junk) - in Mail - gets emptied automatically on a daily or weekly basis (depending on account). So I never actually had to search for something in Trash as I basically know what's in there because it's not there very long and I don't throw away things that's not trash.

Since you mentioned Finders Trash, tests I've made indicate that files made elsewhere, and indexed by Spotlight there, that gets moved to Trash will show up on a search because Spotlights "already got them", but that Spotlight avoids looking for "new" things in Trash. But that was a quick and dirty test I did for another thread (which I cannot be bothered to search for right now).

100% agree. I feel like I got my computer back when I downgraded. I'm happy to wait for 10.4.9: with any luck they'll have it sorted by then. Mail might even get it's progress report back...
That's my feeling as well. If you look at the previous systems, it took apple pretty much till the last update to take out virtually all bugs, with some bad updates in between. Both my G5 here at work and my home G4-450 run 10.3.9., and run without any problems. As long as there are some major issues still unresolved, I won't upgrade to Tiger.

Classic Broken in Tiger?

I have no luck with classic booting... it just sits there with an incomplete status bar. I know i'm not the only person having this problem, but i have yet to hear of a fix. I reinstalled classic... no help. I booted in panther and actually got it to run. Tried it in Tiger and nothing. I logged out and used my test account, still wouldn't work. Tiger seems to flub up booting from OS 9. Booted with Panther, started classic... downgraded classic components and was able to boot with OS 9. My conclusion was that Tiger deliberately broke my classic. Any ideas?  :(

Honestly... I couldn't tell you. There are people on this website that know the difference, so hopefully they will chime in. All I know is that Quartz 2D Extreme and Quartz Extreme are 2 seperate things....

Many people have noted that handbrake encoded 3 times faster in Panther than Tiger. I have seen several people say that tiger does things slower but the gui is faster. Are we being fooled before our very eyes? Is the GUI faster at the expense of applications running faster?

i boot up my computer today... and msn messenger seems to have lost its icon under 10.4.2...
