it's the way the US does everything it accuses China of doing 🤣 what happened to the free market? we're resorting to censorship now?
America wants to be in everyone backyard but other countries aka China/Tiktok can't be behind America backyard if that make sense. America complain about antitrust but you don't really hear much about Facebook/Instagram and Google?

How do you ban an app? By internet filters like in China?
It's fairly simple, Apple takes app off the store occasionally.

The Ban would mean Apple/Google would have to remove TikTok from their App Stores. Those with TT already installed would be ok but at some point, the App would no longer work as Updates would be required but those would also fall under the law of the Ban.

As the weeks roll on, TikTok would fizzle out as the US userbase begins to shrink.

Supposedly it's only the American one. In China it actually contains true things, and is educational (again, allegedly. I don't speak Chinese to be able to validate this).
Actually this is 100% true, Skynews and BBC both reported that the China version of TikTok only shows educational videos. A lot Americans seem to not care that they are literally being brainwashed and are fighting to keep it going.

The question is why SHOULD Apple buy it? They have no core competency here, it would open them up to all sorts of scrutiny for the content on the platform, and it doesnt really aid their product line in any way. Just because they could doesn't mean they should.
To get their cut on the TikTok shop. I get tons and tons of videos on there with people who have bought stuff on there and are trying it in their video.

Because they are not owned by a China Government controlled entity that has been caught using data from the 100 million users by operative is China. Just generally a bad idea to give that kind of access to an adversary. Remember the two platforms you mentioned are banned in China and they are not government t owned.
The post I was replying to said that they "didn't care about the China ties" and gave the impression that Tiktok is bad for society for other reasons. Taking the China thing out of the equation... why is TikTok any worse than Reels and Shorts?

Because TikTok is controlled by the CCP.

Android does not require any app stores.

Worried about spreading political propaganda? What about Facebook and YouTube? I don’t see the difference between them. A forced sale is ridiculous — don’t they think this will inflame US/China relations? Wouldn’t China try this themselves in the future as retaliation? If they just set up a US company and stored data on third party US servers, wouldn’t that be adequate?

Yes. Like any US company must provide information about its users if required by the government. What is the difference?.
This just political with commercial interests. Only US social networks should exist in the world. International open market should not exist?

I've never looked at TikTok. I got away from social media altogether about 3 years ago. I have one co worker in his 50's who's obsessed with it. Constantly looking at it. All hours of the day and night. I just don't get it. I see a lot of people I know constantly still eyeballing FB and other socials. I'm so glad I moved away from it. Doing so was on par with not having my email pushed to my phone in how much it improved my serenity.

I do look at YouTube for movie clips and instructional videos. I learned how to change the front fork seals in my motorcycle last year from watching YouTube videos and I also learned how to do the exhaust manifold replacement on my truck.

As far as TikTok and their affiliation with the CCP? I don't doubt for a second the CCP is wrapped up pretty tight with the information harvesting going on with TikTok and none of it can be good for their primary adversary which right now is the USA.

When legislation such as this gets such broad support from both sides of the isle and the main focus of the concern is the CCP, well I'll err on the side of caution and support the divestiture of the company.

While I question the Constitutionality of such legislation, I believe the divestiture portion gives the government a fig leaf to hie behind in so much as it's not a speech ban, but a business regulation.

I watched an interview recently where a woman who considered herself "addicted" to TikTok decided to stop using it when as she put it "It knew what I was thinking". That's pretty strong.

calling china a bad actor to justify legislation is the oldest form of fear-mongering US politicians have available to them.

"communism is bad and is lurking in the shadows everywhere you go" is the only political language the US has spoken since like, the 50s.

Nothing was justified. A foreign adversary is defined here: 10 U.S. Code § 4872(d)(2).

Android does not require any app stores.
Quite frankly, it wouldn't matter. For majority of phone users, if they can't download something off the App Store on the phone, they won't go out of their way to go and get it via other methods.

The Userbase will drop weeks following a ban even if you can download TikTok through shady means.

Why does FACEBOOK gets a free pass??
You know why?? Because they censor the voice of reason so America allows Facebook to stay out.
