Tik-Tok is not going away. There are already a number of investment firms interested in purchasing the American Tik Tok. and move it servers to the US. The CCP uses influencers to inject their propaganda into the US. Some of them have over 100 million followers world wide and make several million dollars a week. look in on the YouTube channel China Uncensored. You can learn what the CCP is really upto.

To get their cut on the TikTok shop. I get tons and tons of videos on there with people who have bought stuff on there and are trying it in their video.
No way they would ever recoup the cost of TikTok by getting a cut of the shop. This just makes no common sense for a company like Apple to acquire, and wouldn't be worth the reputation risk of the content within the app.

Again, it’s only a problem when someone else is doing it, but it’s totally cool when the US does it…PRISM was one of the biggest scandals and infringements of modern times and somehow gets a free pass…

TikTok may be performing nefarious acts, but as far as I have seen, there is no tangible proof. It's not up to the government to restrict what we can and cannot consume (as long as it doesn't violate other peoples rights or liberties). This bill doesn't just impact TikTok, but gives our government to ban full blown websites, which goes against net neutrality. This, to me, is just a small step towards a larger government censorship. I am not a fan.

Yep I watched it being installed in what was at the time Level 3 in Cambridge MA. Just tons of cables being rerouted to a closed off section of the building. 🤫 🤐 that’s where your internet comes from folks it’s all being sniffed.

Highly disagree because the REAL purpose is for CONTROLLING what info gets shared on it. This is to silence the voices of people especially if they are pro 🌈 pro human rights pro positiveness.
I'm not saying I would even agree with a ban, it's probably unconstitutional. If people want to do a dumb trend and make themselves look like an idiot, that's their right. I'm just saying, TikTok along with most social media has a negative impact on culture and society.

The post I was replying to said that they "didn't care about the China ties" and gave the impression that Tiktok is bad for society for other reasons. Taking the China thing out of the equation... why is TikTok any worse than Reels and Shorts?
Ahh, I see now. Gotcha.

I guess it all depends on how you view it or use it. It's a tool for something. For some, TT is purely entertainment. For others, it's a job. But then there are those who view it as a type of mental brainwashing and that argument isn't entirely wrong either.

As someone who was very reluctant to join TT in the first place, I have found that the cute dog videos and dog training videos that people post have been helpful with training my dog. So in this case, it's helpful.

In the cases of the idiotic TT trends that result in someone hurting themselves or others, yes, it's harmful.

Like anything else, it all boils down to how it's used. I'm all for spending less time on ALL social media as I believe it has taken away from the human experience but its outright ban is not the answer.

I dont know if there is a right answer to any of this without ruffling someone's feathers but a blanket ban using made-up justifications without providing a REAL solution is not a solution at all.

I am all for banning TikTok. It appears to be a CCP spy tool.

The biggest reason I’m for banning it is because both the RNC and DNC do not allow TikTok on their company phones due to spying concerns. When was the last time that republicans and democrats agreed on something

I think we will eventually find out that there was a lot bad things that China was doing to manipulate Americans through TikTok.

Might as well add Facebook and Twitter and Russia to that list then...

TikTok should be banned on two grounds. (1) American social media platforms are banned in China. There should be reciprocity in international relations. (2) More significantly, TikTok is a national security risk. Imagine China tracking journalists critical of the Chinese regime in order to do them harm or pressure them. This can influence public opinion and ... interfere in elections. Both these are legitimate grounds for banning TikTok that have nothing to do with speech content or any First Amendment concerns ... no matter what progressives will tell you.

The problem is the collection and wholesale distribution of metadata. This is a commercial activity and is not protected by the 1st Amendment (US government banned cigarette commercials, also commercial speech that wasn’t protected by the first amendment). And just because it is not [yet] regulated, does not mean it is protected.

The problem with this regulation is it doesn’t address the problem and is just politics in an election year. If this passes, becomes law and TikToc disappears overnight, nothing has really changed. China [or Russia or Iran or France or Catholic Church or RJ Reynolds] can just turn around and buy all of the same data from Meta [or Google or X or dozen other data brokers]

And what do you lose it this metadata gets banned? Your recommended daily dose of recommended cat videos might be less unique. But unique recommendations of daily cat video is not a constitutional right. They will still be there it is just more work to find a unique one. Heck, this could finally be a good use for AI 😉

This is so stupid, but the political environment and election year bravado and fear used to get elected, will result in it going through. No American politician is willing to be on the other side of this and have it distorted and used against them.

I can hear it now ... The children, the children, grooming, grooming
