Is the algorithm really all that TikTok’s IP amounts to? I’m sure it uses some pretty sophisticated neural-network weights, but I think what truly drove its success was being a new platform with fresh content, a simple algorithm, and a lot of luck. An alternate algorithm could just as easily be built from user data through a neural network.
Sure thing, at this point I don’t understand which deal US admin is trying to broker:

• servers likely stay in China. Who knows if there is any sorts of encryption to the user data? One thing is video, another are passwords, emails, phone numbers, addresses and even financial details;
• UI, application, website are all still the property of the ByteDance, so no shared ownership or anything.

They basically sell a subscription to their LLM, which isn’t even that good to start with. Instagram’s feed algorithm, built and owned by Americans is MUCH, MUCH more advanced. It can learn more about a person than 10 TikToks are worth of

Delusional take if you think Instagrams feed algorithm is even close to TikTok's. Instagram is so bad compared, that's why TikTok is even a big deal and people want it to stay around. Otherwise everyone would've moved to just using Instagram if it was better, we all already have it.

TikTok is worse because it highly depends on something that is being pushed into it. Marketing and advertising agencies love that because they can artificially amplify anything they want, which doesn’t equal to “something actually good”. Few examples are useless trends that many influencers utilize, as well as influencers who act on behalf of agencies. Modern music industry strives on it. Idk if it is a win-win scenario if it is artificial.

Instagram on the other hand has some chosen “global trends” and able to pair them up, so it can build a much more complicated map of human behavior online, up to creating certain echo chambers (Instagram’s unvetted comments are sometimes all over the top… on the other hand, free speech!). Regular advertisers would choose Insta any day because it helps them sell to particularly interested audiences, TikTok on the other hand is more about “terraforming” media landscape with artificial trends

Huh? Tim Cook has done WAY more acquisitions in the past 10 years than Apple ever did before him.
Not at this scale. Lots and lots of “small” ones (small in quotes, because they are small to Apple). Only two known acquisitions were above 1 Billion - Beats and Intel’s modem division.

Welcome to the free country, the “democracy” where Chinese people can’t have apps. because the government is just paranoic. I actually lived long enough to see china and the USA switching everything.

I never been to TikTok website heard they taught too many self destructive things to kids and get away with showing it.

I'm sure Taco will rake in some money while converting the site to promote typical maga stuff. Trump cyber coins, Trump phone (remember those?), Trump BBQ sauce, Trump steak,..

“A Grifters gotta’ grift — that’s all they know how to do!”

I wonder how much Oracle, Silver Lake, and Abu-Dhabi-based MGX investment fund will be funneling back to The Dear Leaders financial coffers, via any number of numbered, off shore accounts?

I don't use TikTok at all. But I'm still curious how this is going to work. Are US users going to only see content from US accounts once the sale happens? Is US TikTok going to compete with the EU TikTok, that is still owned by the Chinese?

There will be a new app that US, and only US, users will have access to. The currently installed app will be deprecated and stop working soon after.

So essentially a social media wall between US and the rest of the world (ex. China)? How awkward.

Every other post will be some Pro-Trump-Dictator version of this:

As long as I keep my videos of cats, people falling down, along with my ads for Magic John and the Chinese sign guy, I'm good.

Sorry, I’m not fluent in American paranoia: Which posts exactly are “anti-jew”?

It's this insane thing that's happened in America where Israel has been conflated with Judaism. Anyone with an ounce of sense would know they are not one and the same but, well, we know how common sense is these days.

Tim Cook doesn't favour expensive acquisitions. Beats was one of the biggest and anything AI related he was strong armed into by market conditions.

You sound a bit confused....

There have been 94 acquisitions under Cook in his 14 years. There was 36 acquisitions in total, prior to him, over a period of 33 years (1977-2010).
