The lawsuit argues that the act violates the First Amendment, and it claims that "speculative and analytically flawed" concern over security and content manipulation is an insufficient reason for limiting the free speech of TikTok's 170 million U.S. users.
Everyone keeps trumpeting the First Amendment (and the 2nd on MR😉). Poor Fourth Amendment gets no love.😠 I don't want TikTok to illegally search my device. Full Stop!😤

Force TikTok to remove all unnecessary permissions. Why would it need access to your locations, what other apps are running, install packages🤬 (no, just no), and automatically load itself up for? Permissions requirements should be bare minimum.

I don't have TikTok installed, thank the Lawd. I've got no dog in this fight, but I will die on this hill on principle alone.🤨

U.S. represents only about 15% of ByteDance revenue of $120B. TikTok operates globally.

Why would ByteDance sell TikTok, give up the secret sauce code, and lose all revenue globally? That’s why they won’t sell.
They'd probably only sell it to a company that licenses it from them in the US only.

Correlation is not causation. People have been trying to ban tik tok long before the recent Israel/Palestinian conflict.
Correlation is not causation but Romney literally said it was causation, not correlation. He specifically said that the TikTok ban was pushed through in response to significant pro-Palestine sentiment defeating Israeli PR through TikTok. It is in plain English. Any prior attempts were basic saber rattling to look tough on China and were not any kind of priority.

And you can bet TikTok is going to use that clip as evidence in their favor in the lawsuit. If I were their lawyer I’d be sending Romney a gift basket for those comments.

ByteDance can self-fornicate. We are under no obligation to allow a company which is controlled by a hostile foreign government to continue to operate in the US. If they won't sell, then shut down their access to the US by whatever means necessary.
Right. Similar to how they don’t allow your western intelligence agency-backed loser assortment of garbage websites in their country and you people complain that Chinese people don’t have freedom of speech. You people always want it both ways.

This was insane & surreal. A sitting senator & a sitting SoS just openly saying "yeah we just want to stop free speech". Wild times we're in honestly.
Yes. Since an angry man with a funny mustache did some bad stuff like 80 years ago, it means we need to shut down discussion on the war crimes taking place in Gaza on part of their genocidal Israeli terrorist subjugators.

but you do know they have to ask the user for each permission and theres no way to force them to agree to any of it?

Didn’t the article, but it’s hard to believe considering they were trying to ban it before all of that started.
They were trying to ban it before because they’re not up on Loser Moron Hill in Washington busy kissing rings and whatever else. Similar to how Apple doesn’t go to DC in the volume their parasite comrades in Silicon Valley do, therefore the DOJ is threatening Apple with phony antitrust laws.

The correct way to address any concerns is to pass a law that prohibits "data sharing" of any kind by anyone. The law might say that information about a person belongs to that person. A law like that could solve all the problems but Google and Facebook would fight it to the end. All we Americans can hope for is that such a law gets passed in Europe

Multiple things can be true at once. Also, I feel like I've seen this "using social media to manipulate response for political agendas" tactic before... oh yes! it was from the democrats. I think if the tech companies were honestly held responsible for their "meddling" in political or foreign affairs issues, they'd all be shut down. But we all know that won't happen. The gate seems to swing only one way these days.

This. The idea that TikTok is the only app doing this is absurd. There are LOTS of others. The issue isn’t TikTok. The issue is the lack of a regulatory framework around apps.
