You can't just spend money to create new products beyond a certain point. Human talent and current tech limitations remain limiting factors no matter how much money you spend.

Apple not only exaggerates the simplification of their products, but also of their product lines.

Speaking of spending time on macs, maybe Tim can finally direct his team to update the ancient nvidia drivers (the ones in 10.9.2 are updated ati/amd drivers).

Apple needs to recreate legacy support back to MacOS Classic. We need access to our old data to move into the future. To do that we need to be able to run older software that never got upgraded and never will get upgraded. Apple should provide legacy support for software.

I like that he says they are spending money on macs future. For me my heart will always lie in the Mac,.iPhone and iPads etc are just nice additions even if that's were apple make most money.

That the pc market is falling is just because windows and pcs stays crap. Win8 is rebranded 7 with a stupid startup app/skin. And win7 is vista. It's still vista today and the horrible ground layer of horrible ui with a mess of admin tools and system tools, drivers, install clogging, conflicts and virus killers. I just hate everything about windows. It has the same underlying mess as it always had - since the first windows. It's funny how almost every single software on the Mac is better executed. People don't want a pc, they buy if they can't afford a Mac.

They have. It's called an iMac.

Configurable with up to:
- 3.5 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz).
- 32 GB RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M with 4GB of GDDR5 memory.
- Two thunderbolt ports (yeah, they need an update to thunderbolt 2)

But we want a decent proper graphics card not one out of a laptop

And we can't have that whilst Apple still think a desktop computer should be a big laptop on a stand.

sigh :(

FU, Carl

Hey, Carl, get a clue. Investors aren't taking huge positions in Apple as long as you're involved because they know damn well that you're going to dump your entire position at a moment's notice thus screwing them out of any legitimate gains.

A 17" rMBP sounds like something worth spending part of that enormous amount of money on ;)

pretty pretty please?

Updating the ageing (2011) Thunderbolt Display?

How about we focus on things that are starting to look embarrassingly old, like the ageing Thunderbolt Display!

How long do we have to wait for an update, it's getting absolutely ridiculous.

Come on Apple, get your act together...

Until they make the Mac Mini what it could and should be all I'm hearing is yada yada yada

I'm not sure what your definition of "decent" is but I'd imagine the GTX 780m is more than just "decent" for almost everyone even with games except the hardcore gamers who demand the highest tier of performance, a market Apple clearly has decided not to support. For most buyers even the lower end 755m is probably more than "decent" enough.

What you're looking for is an xMac basically a smaller cheaper version of the old Mac Pro. Apple has been pretty stubborn and stood by its decision by not making one for the past 15 years. Given the desktop market is losing its relevance, I doubt they'll start making one anytime soon, if ever.

On a related note my biggest disappointment with Apple's desktop line up is their refusal to make the SSD the baseline standard. I believe they are doing the buyers a great disservice by not including at least a fusion drive with every desktop Mac.

Why not make it Retina?

I don't think many realize how well pixel downsampling works on Retina Macs. Even the non-native resolutions look great but until you live with it, it's hard to imagine it. I personally was skeptical before using one every day. Even now I sometimes change the resolutions around and just marvel that the display is capable of showing good images other than just the native resolution and its integer multiples.

A retina MBA wouldn't be a new product category, but if they created a new desktop lineup instead of focusing so much on their laptops and mobile devices, I would be happy. The nMP is just too much of a niche product.

Who cares? AAPL stock holders like me.

Why? If an "ultra-slim 12-inch Retina MacBook" is what Apple considers to be a new product category when it's really not, Wall St is going to slam the stock again. It's in Apple's best interest to not allow that to happen.

Wall Street doesn't care about new products as much as they care about beating estimates.

Now bring back the 17" MacBook Pro with a 4K Retina screen!

Does that mean there will be a new Mac Mini soon?

That is the first thing I thought about. I doubt it will be the Mini we all love but rather something rather new. It would be nice if it hit the streets before mid summer.

Carl Icahn can go sit on a pickle and spin.

I voted you up but I must say Mr Icahn has a point, Wall Street isn't listen to what Tim says.

Macs may be a small percentage of profits for Apple, but they still represent an important cornerstone to Apple's business. Having the Mac and tablet business will ultimately allow them to converge the two somehow, and not in a compromised way like Microsoft did. If any company can pull it off, Apple can.

Pretty sure one of the downfalls of Apple in the late 80's/early 90's was having too many products out there. I realize the desire to want to have innovative products, but I'm not sure how well the "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" will work.
The number of products wasn't the problem, it was the expensive products and no defined path to a real operating system. Several different operating system initiatives that failed did Apple no favors at all.

By the time Steve came back he had no choice but to cut products drastically to get past the impending bankruptcy. By the time Steve left us Apple had far more viable products than anytime in the past. In business it is products that sell that count.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeease give us a prosumer version of the new Mac Pro with an i7 and Radions!
I doubt it will have Radions, integrated GPUs are improving to fast to bring out a low cost hardware design that will be around for a decade or more. However I do expect the machine to take design cues from a Mac Pro.

That won't happen, it's like asking for a cheap iPhone. It didn't happen and it won't happen on Mac. You can get a Mac Mini, I guess.

Actually it is not at all like asking for a cheap iPhone. It rather refactoring the line up when most of the Mini sales have evaporated due to tablets. For the Mini to remain relevant it needs to have better performance to suck up those users that can't justify the IMac.
----------
Maybe with the IGZO displays and the new Broadwell SoCs

Nay be Quantum Dot tech isn't that far off.

----------

Maybe a pizza box fleet of computers for enterprise customers? I could imagine something about the size of a SPARCStation 20 which is easily accessible - sell only to volume buyers:
They just delivered the Mac Pro as their workstation solution. Now I'm first to believe the Mini is getting a make over, ideally into an XMac but there is no reason for a chassis that size.

I'd love to see something like that particularly if they get the whole teething issues of 10.9.x sorted and and they focus on establishing a roadmap.

You must be a self important corporate IT guy if you are asking for a roadmap. Apple has clearly demonstrated that those road maps are useless be demolishing much of the PC manufacturing world. Dell or HP may have a roadmap but it won't be much good if they aren't around in two years.

Have you any doubt?

I hope that involves OS X as well. Mavericks needs to be improved, but the direction seems to be the right one.

The direction is right but note the word direction implying travel. Operating systems are works in progress and literally are never finished. Think about how old UNIX is. In any event I'm confident that Apple will continue to refine OS/X.

By the way I like Mavericks very much also. There are some issues but overall it performs well on my old machine. In a nut shell it does the things I want it to do

Sorry, had too lol. Only poking fun :p

But yes, having an alternative GPU would be nice other than the NVIDIA GPUs, considering that the new mac pros do have AMD cards in them.

He's been saying this for the last few years. All they've done is axed useful valuable products we used (MBP 17", MacPro),
The Mac Pro got replaced with a better machine!
minimised and reduced features and functionality of other products and made them less useful or useless (rMBP, MP). They've made a mess of the Mac OS,
Strange because I really like Mavericks it is a big step forward.
plagued it with issues, over complicated it, slow to update and rectify issues,
I have to give you this one, that have taken their time with bugs and regressions. However a solid point release is far better than a bunch of patches every Tuesday.
removed functionality (laziness) and strangled the OS with un needed sand boxing.
What of significance was removed?

As for Sandboxing, if they get it right it should provide much needed additional security. You may call it unneeded but I don't think that is the opinion of those that understand it. Of course Apple has rough edges to iron out, but in a year or two most people will expect that Apps be compatible with the new security technologies.
Generally, proving incompetence at writing good quality software functional and feature laden.
Mavericks is pretty impressive for those that understand it.
Bring back Avie and Bertrand.
Apple is doing fine. With Mavericks they are telling me that they have the same interest at heart that I do. I fully expect Mac OS to just get better with each new revision.
