Subtext: We are going to stick to our 2 year design rotation for the iPhone so the iPhone 5s will keep the same design with updated internals. Then next year the iPhone 6 will have a new design and larger screen option. The iPhone 6 will probably follow the iPad lead and come in 2 sizes - 4" and 5".

I suspect they are hoping that the rumoured new cheaper plastic iPhone will keep up their iPhone sales momentum in the meantime.

Strange... considering Apple never made a 10" tablet.

----------

Minimum? Have they ever made the 10" tablet which according to them should be a minimum?

obviously steve jobs isnt as anal as you when talking about screen sizes. ipad is 9.7 or something

Why?

Seriously why would Apple have to step up. Those massive phones really aren't selling all that well to begin with.

Yes, the iPhone 5 has a great display. But with the 1080p panels on the htc one/galaxy s4, Apple will need to step up.
It is only a problem if those big phones end up getting any traction in the market. To put it bluntly there is only so much room in my pants and I'm not cutting anything off to make room for a bigger phone.
The 1080p displays (minus the xperia z) are very, very good looking and better then the iPhone 5. Please make atleast a 720p or even better a 1080p :).

And yes, I have a iphone 5.
Does it really matter? Seriously I really see people quickly growing tired of such large phones. Lets face it the screen on my iPad beats my iPhone 20 ways to Sunday, that doesn't mean I want to slip it in my pocket or carry it around constantly.

Marketing BS. Its the perfect size because 4" is what they currently have and will be releasing.

Of course you dont say there's something wrong with your products, Tim wont say "our screen is too small... but sorry to say we can only release another 4" phone.."

There have been numerous rumors claiming that Apple is working on an iPhone with a larger screen to compete with phones from competitors like Samsung, but Tim Cook's comments during today's Q2 financial results call indicate that the company is not quite ready to make a phone with a 5-inch screen.
It appears that Apple will not be releasing an iPhone with a larger screen until the company's manufacturing partners can supply it with a 5-inch screen that meets its demanding criteria.

The above quote is from a rough transcript of the earnings call

Article Link: Tim Cook Comments on 5-Inch Phone Market, Reiterates Commitment to Quality Over Size

You mean, you won't ship it when the margins aren't high enough, Tim? You can easily build a bigger screen if you wanted, but it might cost $10-$20 more...at first...

Thank god for that.

I hate using phones that need two hands to use.

iP5 = RH thumb to LH corner no worries.

SGIII not a chance and I have big hands...

So be it. HTC One, here I come. I'm looking for bigger screen, not narrower.

You wont regret it. Just got mine monday, the screen is absolutely sick. Only overshadowed by the design of the phone itself, and the speaker quality.

C YA. And please don't forget to leave this site instead of coming back ranting all the time thx

This sentiment is so ridiculously obnoxious.

I am 6'1" with pretty average hands and I can easily use my 4.7" nexus 4 one handed. I can even reach the top right corner! It's easy. It's shocking to me that people on this board say 4" is awesome, and 5" would be absurdly huge. Think about that for a bit.

Also, lay an iPhone 5 on top of a larger phone like the GS3. Look at how SMALL the real size difference actually is. It's just poor design on Apple's part that their phone has such a huge bezel on top and bottom. Cut the bezel down, increase the screen, you have a much better device that is negligibly bigger.

This product is just not for you. So just stop your whining and use your Android phone.

Then speaking about design, first get the talent of JI and his famed, then you will be able to talk. Since then you have no lesson to teach him

I personally think the larger 5"+ phones are a fad. A fad doesn't have a time duration. Over in Australia 3D free to air came and went, about a year ago 3D tv we're all over the place. Now it's quietened down a lot, and really it's just the TV manufactures jumping to the next thing every 12 months to get people to keep buying gear. Actually, I see that market taking a cue from Apple! The big phones do well in Asia, in Sydney you see Asian girls that have a bag to put the phaplet in all over the place, so it has a market, but I think it will calm down. In the case of Samsung bring out 6" phones it's just a way to get a foothold in that certain market.

So the iPhone is just a fad? Because if their is no time duration on a fad and Apple change it every two years then you must conclude it's a fad. But if you think 5" phones are a fad then you are surly mistaken I think because I see plenty of them around, and plenty of people are changing the iPhone for bigger screen phones.

I'm just happy to seepeople talking about the HTC one this year. Last year it was all jumping to the s3. HTC makes great phones and no one was buying them. losing HTC would be bad for android and what's bad for android is bad for ios

I agree with this

Personally, I dont want a 5 inch screen. But there are a large segment of people out there apparently that do. So, if Apple is to keep it's market share up, it should introduce a larger version in addition to its current offerings. In my opinion, the perfect size screen is a 4.3" 720p display. That's what size I had on my HTC Rezound and it was perfect. But, I'd rather have a screen slightly too small rather than too big as I like to carry my phone in my pocket and still be able to sit down and move around, etc. My boss bought the GS3 and it's humungous, he carries it in his shirt pocket cause it's too big and uncomfortable in pants pocket. That's too big, in my opinion. I'd NEVER buy a phone that big.

But, I also think a lot of these people buying these humungous phones are just Android fanboys. If Samsung GS4 had a 7inch screen, they'd gobble it up just because they're fanboys. Just like if Apple went with a 3inch screen millions of Apple fanboys would gobble it up.

Have to say the HTC One is starting to look like a nice phone!

Something that can bridge the gap between phone and iPad Mini does make sense, I mean why take two bottles into the shower?.

Having said that my iPhone 5 does everything I want of a phone now and I'm even getting used to the size. Now clad in the Element Black Ops Case I'm reluctant to change because it looks great!

actually, yes it is - if you compare to latest-gen phones, it's definitely worse than the HTC One's, the SGS IV's and probably also than the Xperia Z's (which has sucky viewing angles but the screen's otherwise pretty awesome).

*sigh* no it's not! Many tests and subjective opinions have already confirmed this.
The One X(+) is close but dimmer
The GS4 is still over saturated and artificial looking plus AMOLED is still more power hungry.
The Xperia Z has poor viewing angles and doesn't quite show true colors (it's not even IPS!).
The Nexus 4 is washed out, poorly calibrated and again not true colors.
The Lumia 920 is over saturated too and somewhat artificial looking albeit less so than the GS4.

For the umpteenth time, only the HTC One has a superior screen. Stop twisting reality just because you don't like Apple, it's tacky.

Your 5" phone hate would mean normal persons shouldn't own any large phones as well, right.

I love a 5"+ screen because I can read e-books in Kindle so comfortable from that, I can game on it more comfortably. Do you see my words?? I want a phone that I can read from comfortably, I don't apply zombie fanboism.

I wonder if Apple is going to release a 5" iPhone this year or so, are you going to say only Android Fanbois would buy them LOL.

LG Optimus G Pro's screen is on par with HTC's.

Quote Tim Cook:
My view continues to be that iPhone 5 has the best display in the industry. We always strive to create the very best display. Some customers value large screen size. Others value other factors such as resolution, color quality, white balance, reflectivity, power consumption, compatibility of apps, and portability. Our competitors have made some significant tradeoffs in many of these areas to ship a larger display. We would not ship a larger display iPhone while these tradeoffs exist."

The HTC One screen is amazing......the S4 should be as well.
So based on growing sales of the larger phones.......the customer is telling Apple what they want. But will Apple listen?

my current 4S screen is like a postage stamp
4.0" screen is acceptable (those fractions of an inch DO make a difference)
4.3" screen would be perfect!
4.5" screen would be acceptable
4.8" screen would be acceptable
5.0" screen would be acceptable
:p:D:D

Apple can make any phone they like, from 3 inch to 6 inch. If they dont do it, there is a reason. The iPhone is iconic product, made to fit everyone, man or woman, child or adult, young or old, and thereis only one iPhone. Samsung has 8476387 models of their phones and they experiment and see that bigger sells better, so they decide to focus on bigger screens. If you calculate what is the middle size screen for a android phone, maybe the number will be below 4 inch. Apple has 4 inch, 7,9 inch and 9 inch iOS devices. Dont understand what you want more from them. Some of you think that Apple is closed society and they never get out of their campus. But thats not truth. Tim and Jonny know what they are doing, belived it or not.

If anyone want bigger screen please, go to another brand, dont say what apple should or shouldnt do. I Belive that Apple are artists and we are only consumers. The only thing I ever wanted from them is cheaper price so I can have more of their products. From them is the product, from me is the money. Thats how it works. You dont go to Da Vinci studio and say to him that Monsa Lissa must have better smile because you and your friend think so, no you dont do it, because its not your job to decide what is better for a certin product.

you just made my day :) That's probably the most ridiculous comment in the entire thread so far. You're accusing me of "twisting reality" and then present me with your own version of "reality". I've had the Xperia Z (yes, poor viewing angles, as I had already mentioned). I also owned the Nexus 4 and the Lumia 920. The Nexus 4 has a decent screen but it's not great - I agree. The Lumia 920 has an excellent screen that runs circles around the iPhone 5's. The GS4 hasn't even been released yet and AMOLED has never been more power-hungry than LCD. It's very much the other way round. LG has been claiming that their LCD screen is superior in terms of power usage - a claim that has never been proven.

I have the very strong feeling that you haven't used a single one of the devices you're citing. You're just a troll.

yeah, I choose not to believe it.

Did I hurt you're feelings because I expressed an opinon? I think I'll stick around just to piss you off more than I've already done. :p I can't wait to see your expression when Apple makes a 5 inch screen. Oh my, will your tune reverse then.

My friend got upset when he held his iPhone 5 up to my Note 2 and realized not only is my screen a helluva lot bigger, it also looks better too.

Phone Size

When there aren't any more features to pack into the iPhone, Apple might make a larger phone. I think it's business smart of them to hold back the "size feature".

While they are still selling like hotcakes, they can back burner the larger phone offering and keep it as an Ace card and pull it out when they need it. I don't hear a lot of complaining about the size of the screen and I take care of a lot of folks with iPhones at our firm.

I personally would love a larger screen, but I will wait for it. Apple has a long way to go with the iPhone, providing a larger screen right now isn't an absolute "must do" business move IMHO.
