Apple CEO Tim Cook today confirmed that Apple plans to purchase chips from U.S.-based TSMC factories that are being constructed in Arizona, reports CNBC.

Cook was in Arizona at the announcement of TSMC's investment in the state, which was also attended by U.S. President Joe Biden. "And now, thanks to the hard work of so many people, these chips can be proudly stamped Made in America," said Cook. "This is an incredibly significant moment."
Today is only the beginning. Today we're combining TSMC's expertise with the unrivaled ingenuity of American workers. We are investing in a stronger brighter future, we are planting our seed in the Arizona desert. And at Apple, we are proud to help nurture its growth.
TSMC manufactures all of the chips that are used in Apple's iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other devices. At the current time, chips are manufactured primarily in Taiwan, but TSMC is building two factories in Arizona as Apple seeks to move more manufacturing to the United States. TSMC plans to spend $40 billion, with the first plant to open in 2024 and the second to open in 2026.

One of TSMC's factories in Arizona will be producing 4-nanometer chips when it opens in 2024. TSMC will make 20,000 wafers per month, and Apple will use about a third of the output. In the future, TSMC will use the factory to manufacture even more advanced 3-nanometer chips for Apple.

Nice to see, but seems the most advanced processors will still be made only in Taiwan.

obviously 4nm wont be cutting edge in 2024 and 3nm wont be cutting edge in 2026. It would be nice if the most advanced chips could be made in the USA too, but obviously I’m sure Taiwan would be reluctant to tolerate that loss of manufacturing exclusivity.

I thought TSMC has startet 3nm production in Asia and Apple will ship Macs with 3nm early next year.
What 4nm chips will Apple buy from TSMC in 2024?

I am glad to see the chips built in America. Arizona for TSMC and Intel, and Ohio for Intel. I hope many future Americans and others from around the world benefit from these announcements... in terms of recieving the rigorous technical schooling and training at the local high school and/or university, and then a job in semicondicutor manufacturing and/or design. Semiconductors are cool! So is operating system design!

Taiwan and China have massive industries built around high tech manufacturing... and I'm glad to see the USA and soon Europe get in on the action too.

What a waste of resources, (Oil), the chips have to be shipped all the way to Asia, more pollution.🤔

disagree that this is a waste of resources

it is important that the US has the ability to produce our own chips, in the event that something happens to Taiwan - we don’t want to rely on China for advanced semiconductors

This is no where near enough, but it’s a start

and along with it all the toxic pollution that will cause major health issues for the Arizona workers and people in the communities.

Not really.

There are thousands of unused shipping containers being shipped from the US to Asia. It gotten so bad, that it is actually cheaper for companies in China to make new shipping containers than to ship used ones back.

Now, there is something to put in them.

I added another reason, but, it's not allowed here, Politics.

Bold: it won't.

The wider benefit is that reliance on China will decline, resilience will increase and buyers will be prepared to pay a bit more knowing it secures jobs
