Apple CEO Tim Cook recently sat down with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the two discussed topics like the expansion of Apple's manufacturing base into India, Apple Pay, and the recent launch of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus (via The Times of India). During the talks, Modi invited Cook to open a new manufacturing base within India, to which the Apple CEO was said to have "responded positively," especially considering India's burgeoning app development business.

Foxconn was previously reported to be looking at the possibility of an expansion into India to produce iPhones and iPads, but Cook's outspoken interest in the possibility marks Apple's first public interest in the expansion. The two also briefly discussed bringing Apple Pay to India, along with the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Although the new iPhones were known to be coming to India by the end of 2015, this morning brought confirmation of the October 16 launch of the devices in the country, mentioned briefly in Apple's iPhone sales press release.

Cook also noted Apple's "unique tie" to India, pointing to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' visit to the country and the inspiration he got from his stay there. The Apple CEO then voiced support of the Prime Minister's "Digital India" program, which aims to reduce paperwork and lagging networks by ensuring all government services are available to citizens online and bolstering rural areas with higher-speed internet connections.

    Poll:-
Would you prefer your iPhone made in China or India?

I've heard Google and Microsoft make their way into India too.
Sounds like great things headed their way.

It may take a couple of years to lift off though.
    Undoubtedly great things lay ahead.

If it sells a bit cheaper in the country itself, am surely going to stock up on my yearly trips lol.

I prefer India to China. Democracy > Communism. Open Internet > Great Firewall.

If the product and quality control is the same, it mustn't matter where your phone comes from or what color, gender or sexual orientation of the assembler has.

Obviously, but we have people who are willing to be just that.
Just look at the comment from Skika about iToilets.

There's a good chance that even if the same strict quality control is maintained in India, there will be people who'd be dismissive about it.

Cook also praised the quality of the Indian hallucinogens in those era, suggesting to hit the ol' goose at the debriefing party, just for good old times' sake.

I don't think this signals a major push in Indian manufacturing of our iPhones. Apple simply cannot sell iPhones in India without a manufacturing presence in India. Once apple sets up base in India, they will have over a billion new customers to sell to. I'm pretty sure most of the iPhones we get will still originate from China for the next few years.

Agreed, as Foxconn would take at least a while to set up their industries.
But the coming years would be a dramatic shift from China to India.
My take is 5 or less years.

It would be great for India's economy as well.

Neither. Bring the manufacturing and assembly back to the U.S.

Is it just me that thinks Tim need to get his finger out and maybe, just MAYBE bring Apple Pay to Europe and Canada before going to India and China? Seriously?! all these places getting first dibs on iPhone & Apple Watchs now and everyone in Europe is slapped down to 3rd 4th wave countries for being loyal customers for decades, and why? Because he is a money grabber only interested in pushing up the stock price and to hell with all the customers who tirelessly supported Apple for years. Ye thanks Tim.. (Do we have that middle finger emoji yet or what?) from a pee'd off European......

    Lol.

    Or if serious:
"Bring back"?? Umm.... exactly how old are you? When was this magic era when cheap electronics were manufactured in the US, NOT China?

Double facepalm. Muricans can't do those type of jobs. Complaints everywhere plus Apple will get lawsuits everyday. Also, high standard of living in US requires high salary thus Apple gadgets will even more pricier. Not gonna happen.

A lot of Indian see China as rivalry, and hope China to go down. Is that true?

As long as they don't just get http://internet.org. I heard Indians were pissed about it, and for good reasons.

Seriously, the Apple store employees are so pushy about it. The guy told my friend about it for 5 minutes, and then she just paid with cash :D
