So what? And NeXTStep had the ability to inject voice messages in their email app long before the creators of Whatsapp were even born. That's not the point. The fact is, when APPLE decides to implement something or is rumored to, Samsung is there right behind trying to tag along.

If you say so, then I would say Apple is tag along with Samsung for phablet...

That little half-circle UI that is part of voice messaging? Works out to about 1.25" diameter (32mm). That's a pretty common size for watch faces.

Probably unrelated.

It seems that you only have eyes to see others following Apple and you can see sarcasm in front of you

No I agree. The timing of the fingerprint sensor was coincidence. The timing of gold as standard option was coincidence.

Oh, you also don't know that Macrumors censures some words

The language barrier seems to prevent you from understanding my post.

Yes, everybody follows Apple. Happy? Now you can still live in your own bubble if it makes more comfortable.

...yep, in a bubble where finger print sensors and gold as basic option are well established :) .

And you keep doing what you're here for.

If I ever felt that I needed to send a voice message - I may as well make it a phone call.

I do this on a regular basis. I ride my bike a lot, if I get a message I can ask Siri to read it to me and have an option to reply. It reads back the reply before I send it; and while it's not perfect, it's usually good enough to get my point across. You can even have Siri post a facebook status for you.

Really?! Did that come in with iOS 7? Can't believe I didn't know about that!

Does it tell you who's calling too?

Ugh! Just what America needs another tool for class/mannerless Americans to act obnoxious in public.

I've never used it for calls, just for messages. I think it was there in 6,but I could be wrong.

I don't know why you assume it would be restricted to America.

Yeah, but you can send a voice message far faster than waiting for someone to pick up the phone. I do understand your point though.

What if......

One of the iWatches sensors were able to notice when you sneezed your hand into a fist and you could easily send a voice message?

Smartwatch problem is a miniaturization and power efficient issue. Both issues are not solved yet, so I don't think a smart watch in 2014 or 2015 is feasible until unknown technology is about to be shown to the public.

Bottom line, flop warning!

I doubt it

When Cook hyped voice communications (and the beefing-up of Siri), he was probably thinking of CarPlay rather than the iWatch. Since CarPlay doesn't involve the production of any new hardware such as could be showcased at a Cupertino presser, and since it's being introduced gradually on a mfr.-by-mfr. basis, it's easy to overlook what an important revenue stream it's going to become for Apple.

I really hope you meant to write "squeezed"

Voice messaging....

So that's like voicemail without having to call the person's phone number and hoping they don't answer their phone.

Haha. Yes, squeezed! Lol

I'm was glad to see it is finally arriving on iMessage. I believe things like Whatsapp, WeChat, LINE, and even FaceBook have it.

I use it quite a lot, I find it very useful.

I like using voice-to-text when I'm walking or don't want to bury my head in my phone to type a long text — but it definitely has issues if there's a lot of background noise or if my breathing (while walking) is different than when I'm still.

My thoughts exactly. Heavy breathing aside, when I'm in a hurry walking and even a minute counts in being on time, or out on a run, the last thing I want to do is stop and text or worse attempt texting during those activities.

I like the idea. I think most people misunderstood what Tim meant by Voice Messaging. It does not require a speech recognition whatsoever, you can speak gibberish and it will still record and send it as voice message. Download WeChat and see what it does, because that's what most people in China use. Well, or either lazy people or efficient people, depends on what you see. But it's certainly easier and faster (MUCH much faster) to just say your message and send it instead of typing.

It seems like they're going backwards in progress... isn't the voice to text more advanced and useful than actually sending a voice file?

Talk about a bad call... almost as bad as the iOS7 UI and widgets in the notifications window in iOS8.

Actually if done right, nothing is wrong with reusing old tech, re-programming it to be much more efficient. If they can implement it in such a way that it feels natural just to use it without feeling like another extra step to do messaging, I'd say go for it. Many people will find it useful. Especially in emergency.

Voice messaging isn't going to catch on, it's just too awkward. People already do everything possible to avoid calling someone. Unless its urgent, messaging will be relegated to texts.

I agree. I hate specking to people on the phone and would much rather text. The receiver is also going to have to play the file, and i know id rather see a text and its information rather than play an audio file. Imagine in a quite place you start playing your text messages. Also, as this is an ioOS8 thing, how would you know when you start recording a message the other person is able to play it? If they can't, what happens to the message?

You can already do that with voice memos. It'll probably be as huge as "FaceTime." Looks revolutionary on paper, but really only used in certain situations.

You mean like this?

No, if you think that is the same then we're done here...

Edit: Tried uploading a screen capture of a share sheet in the Voice Memo app via Dropbox but I don't know if anyone can see the picture.

TL;DR:
Using share sheets inside the Voice Memo app to send voice as text is incomparable.

Voice messaging should have nothing to do with an iWatch, here's why.

1. Phones are and have been an extremely acceptable way to get voice from person A to person B over a network. The shoulder/arm/elbow/wrist/hand/fingers combo can easily articulate the orientation of a device (phone) to place a speaker near ear and a microphone near mouth. Putting your watch next to your ear, or next to your mouth looks stupid.

2. How functional will a watch be with speakers and microphones once you washed your hands? Yeah sure Samsung and maybe others can offer a water resistant coating, but I'm expecting the iWatch to be at least as water resistant as the Casio F-91w.

Other thoughts,

The iWatch may feature notifications, which a "voice message" would easy fall under.

Headphones would be a better solution than a watch for sending and receiving audio messages as it's already placed upon/in ears and has close proximity to the mouth.

If Apple releases a watch that you talk or listen to for conversing with others, I'll gladly delete my macrumors account and register at an android forum as well as make the switch.
