That would be unfortunate. The battery in my key fob lasts for years.

Perhaps that is the answer to the dead battery issue. When the battery is depleted past a certain level, it switches to a mode where only certain essential functions are available. If my car's key fob can last for years on one battery, couldn't the Apple Watch's battery provide enough power to emulate the key fob for a day or two after it's too low to do all the other stuff?

IF you don't mind the screen not working (what uses the most power by far), probably can last a good deal more. Wonder if they could have a voice mode, with no screen at all.

Glad to hear that the UK retail staff are making such a significant contribution to Apples success; perhaps they may like to pay some corporation tax on the back of it?

No watch is "waterproof" and that is not an allowed marketing term. Watches can ve water resistant to a specified depth. If he's marketing it as waterproof, then he is lying.

What are you talking about. My watch is Waterproof to 300 Metres. To change the battery I have to send it back to the factory to be resealed.

You know... you saying this just made me think it's a lot more reasonable for Apple to make a car.

They would do it for the same reason that they made iWork. Not because they particularly care about it, but because everyone else is doing a lousy job of it and they want to shake up the market. As soon as other companies get their crap together, Apple bows out (until/unless they're needed again - this has been why iWork has come and gone so many times, between phases of lots of activity and no activity at all.)

So Apple will demonstrate how to properly make and sell a car, others will copy, and then Apple will bow out.

Except Tesla is already doing that (and with no plans of bowing out.) They're already firing their cannons on combustion engines and dealers, and it seems that they're slowly but surely winning.

Except the tesla costs $90,000 and if they could make something similar but with less performance and equal battery range in the $45,000 price range it would kill the market in no time

You can't bow out of making a car because you need to have parts and service for them for years after sale

I wonder if Apple will sell the Edition online, or if you will need to go to a store to get it. Do I trust UPS or FedEx with a $10,000 watch?

Why not? Any reason that is worse than trusting them with a $10,000 Mac Pro?

And how do you think Apple get them to the stores?

The Apple Watch is many solutions combined in a convenient package.

Why would you buy a smart phone just so people could send text messages to you? We already had the US mail. Or text pagers, if you needed the message right away. That single, solitary reason, all by itself, is not a good enough reason to buy a smart phone. It doesn't make sense to buy a smart phone for that reason and that reason alone.

Hardly anyone will buy the Apple Watch for just one reason. Making fun of just one reason is a clueless way to criticize it.

Replacing the key fob in your pocket with wrist-worn emulation is a small thing, but there are three cars parked in front of my house (only one is mine, but I'm an authorized driver of all three). I also have a rather thick building security card in my wallet for my work, and often carry an NFC hotel room key as well. All of these could be replaced with a single device that also acts as a fitness tracker and a text message reader and gives me caller-ID, and is attractive, and personalizable, and I could also use it in place of credit cards for most purchases I make throughout the day.

With UPS, Any package with a value over a certain amount ($2k I believe) is kept in a locked cage during transit, and overseen by retired cops / military during transit. I'm sure FedEx is similar. They aren't in the business of losing goods and being knocked off.

Is this completely secure? No. But neither are Apple stores.

Not to mention malls and mall parking lots.

Did Steve go traveling around when he introduced the iPad or iPhone?

What possible difference does it make? Different time and different company. And different person.

Big mental hurdle to overcome to get folks to leave credit cards and car keys at home. Dead watch batteries or a broken watch would suck if you don't have spare keys (or a spare watch!).

And 10 to 1 odds that if they did have a spare watch they'd have it locked inside the car! :p

I wonder if programming Apple Watch to work as a car key fob will require cooperation of the car manufacturers. I don't think they will cooperate. can a random fob be programmed by a user to work with their car?

Years ago I lost a friends fob. Found a cheap one online, don't remember if it was a genuine Chevy part. The dealer had to get the fob and car talking. Could have charged me more than the fob but he didn't.

YEs, like the invention of laser... Not sure what your point is?

If you can use it in voice mode, you could use it without looking at the watch, or touching it, at all.

- Help for the blind, or people with a low vision
- Help for people with restricted mobility, sick
- Hands full
- Commands to watch without breaking stride while running (which happens if you look at the watch and running at a good clip)
- Command to watch while its not on your wrist

- Seems it has many interesting uses

Seriously, I can get rid of my Ford Key Fob and walk up open and start my car with my Apple Watch and iPhone? Now that is a neat reason to get the watch.

I do not think i needed much encouragement to get the apple watch.
Furthermore, the Covent Gardens store is my favourite apple retail store in the UK - really friendly and informative staff, great location, and awesome products!

no, he sat in bed complaining about the color of the Google logo ;)

how cool would it be if Apple made a NFC API, and then someone made an attachment for any normal car to unlock the doors with a NFC tap!! super unlikely though

Couldn't agree more!!!!
Hopefully the EU will close that hole very soon. (as well as for Amazon, starbucks etc.)

Apple Watch ≥350$, a Car ≥ 30.000$. Being locked out of that car because of empty Watch - priceless.

There will be no more clues before the 9th. The analysts will spit out their BS though as usual. But the smart person will wait for the 9th to hear the information from the mouth of Apple.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_Resistant_mark

http://beckertime.com/blog/why-there-are-not-any-waterproof-watches/

Excerpt:

"The term “waterproof” was discontinued in the late 1960’s because several government organizations including the Federal Trade Commission investigated truth of product labeling and advertising."

If your watch is water-resistant to 300 meters it would be considered a dive watch and the Apple Watch is not advertised as being a dive watch. Modern Rolex's are rated to 100 meters, which according to the chart in the second article, makes them ok for snorkeling but not for diving or things like Jet skiing. I'm willing to bet the Apple Watch will be the same rating but we should find out on March 9th.

What I wouldn't give to completely get rid of my keychain.

Doesn't really matter for me because I keep a Swiss Army Knife with me anyway (which everyone should do BTW), so the keys attached to it aren't much extra.

My watch says "WATERPROOF" on the back, so it must be allowed.
