Throw in a Retina display, A6 c/gpu, a Gig of RAM and I'd consider it a value at $350.

I'd be the first in line to buy one...

You do realise that Apple generally sell at over 100% profit, dont you. The iPhone 4 for example cost around $188 to make, and it sold for a hell of a lot more than that.

They could sell the iPad Mini at $200 and still turn a healthy profit.

Really? Amazon couldnt. Im not sure why Apple could.

Let's put this way. It's a $129 more than let's say Nexus.
You get better software experience, thousand of native apps, better quality product, and nicer looking one IMO. The specs are lower than some competitors, but if you look at the overall experience, it a much better value and I don't necessarily think $129 more is such a big deal.
Like I originally said, you get what you pay for.

The iPad mini is of course better than the competition, but considering the expectations swirling around this device, I think it would have been better to include either a retina display or an A6 processor like the iPhone 5 in order to better justify that price point in people's minds. I think it's the psychology of the older processor and display in a brand new device that is at work here.

I really was just saying thanks! ;)

I think you must have read my comment wrong?

I have loved my iPad and we have become especially close during the past 6ish weeks since my iMac's video card died and my iPad has been my only device (apart from my iPhone).

Going back to me noticing stuttering ... I never noticed it before today, funny enough. I created a new folder in my bookmarks and added bookmarks for a bunch of London/UK newspapers and it appears to be these sites which cause the stuttering. But they are littered with live advertisements and embedded video so it is now obvious what caused the stuttering.

When viewing the Apple UK site it was stuttering and reloading stuff as I was scrolling up & down ... BUT, this was when I also had one of these newspapers open in another tab. After I cleared all cache & history in Safari's setting, things are now smooth again.

It is a known fact that newspapers make the majority of their money (and sometimes all of their in money) from advertising, so there you go!

Also, my router is in another room and my signal is fluctuating between full & 2 bars so you might just be right with regards to WiFi issues. My router is very fast but if the full signal is not making it to my iPad then this will also have an effect on browsing etc.

Nice one ...

Edit: narrowed the issue down to one particular newspaper's site (which I won't name) and I have removed its bookmark.
I'm glad you found an answer to your problem. Things aren't always so simple. ;)

This just isn't true at all. I have an iPhone at the moment, have own two previous generations, have bought an iPad for a gift, used nano's since they came out...

And while I wouldn't call it whining, I certainly don't mind complaining about Apple.

The Lightning connector is the biggest raping I've taken from a company in a LONG time. Still pisses me off.
You are 100% correct, it's not a matter of whining. If Apple didn't do some of the things they do, the complaints would not be so strong.

You've made a very good point. Especially when we take into consideration the extreme hype Apple has put behind the retina displays. By neglecting to include retina in the mini, they're just taunting buyers because they can.

I am the usual fanboy that defends Apple but they are totally wrong here.

The iPod Touch should have been lowered to $199 and the iPad Mini priced at $249.

It is crazy that the Nexus 7 in many regards is just as nice of a tablet and is priced so much more aggressively.

Software and looks are a push - subjective to the user.
I feel that the Nexus 7 has just as good build quality as the current iPad.

I can justify mostly every other Apple product except the iPad Mini.

This is going to be a terrific product and I can't wait to get my hands on one! I will also be upgrading my iPad 3 to the new one.

No wonder why Apple is so rich.

To the detractors, go get an android device, see how you like that! We'll miss ya and sooner or later you will see the difference in experience!

I did :D It's great. 16GB storage all for $249. Saved myself $80. ;)

Apple's not a charity.

Are you serious?! :eek::eek::eek:

iOS needs an overhaul. Every time the cool new product photos are released, I look at them and say to myself: "Cool new hardware! But there's that plain-Jane iOS home screen again.....blah." And I'm brought back down to earth. I honestly think the product photos would be more effective with the screen turned off.

Book Worthy! :)

Think about it this way. The iPad mini is basically a smaller iPad 2. (So no need to whine about the lack of an A6 or retina display; the iPad 2 doesn't have those either.)

Aluminum costs less than a dollar a pound. That means there's less than 25 cents difference in cost for the aluminum between the 2 and the mini. The machining on the mini would be ever so slightly less, say a dollar or two.

The screen presumably costs less, but as stated somewhere else maybe $5 less. Call it $10 for good measure.

Everything else content-wise would be about the same. So something that costs only $10-15 less in just parts alone, with others costs the same, they are selling for $70 less. That's aggressive.

That's a lot of aluminum then.

And they don't give to charity either.

Proof?

If Android wasn't so god awful I'd go with you.

What don't you like about Android?

I'm in for 3.

Glass and aluminum > plastic.
Proper color rendering > extra pixels on a crappy screen.
Smooth an consistent UI > specs.

Color looks great on my Nexus 7. And Jelly Bean is as smooth as butter.

Fanboy? Why yes, yes I am.

Well at you admit it all while Tim Cook and friends laugh all the way to the bank.

Wow someone who isn't blind. While the build quality of the Nexus 7 isn't iPad quality, it's decent enough. And it's waaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than the iPad mini.

Can't believe how brainwashed some people are..."oh the iPad has a great build quality. They use aluminum yada yada yada."

Yea that's nice but it's not worth the $80 premium for an over priced iPad mini.

Aggressively my a**. Blind people will still buy it despite:

1) the fact it has lower resolution than my Note 1 and Note 2
2) the fact that it has lower resolution than Nexus 7 which Apple didn't point in their presentation during its launch. I bet next year when they release its Retina version, they'll surely point it out.
3) 512MB RAM on tablet that costs more than $300? Hello?! But then Apple users are used to old technology
4) Still no Wifi direct or Bluetooth transfer
5) still no mass storage mode

People will still buy it because they lack intelligence and common sense.

"One of the things we try to do is create a product that our customers will love and use for month and years".

Aye, months in terms of the iPad 3 you ....

While I will continue to use my iPad 3 as I mentioned in my thread titled "24 hours later" in the iPad section, Apple's actions have soured my feelings toward the company. Apple HAVE become what they fought against, the spectacled man on screen speaking to a crowd of drones, they ARE big brother now, they have become that IBM figure.

My 4S contract expires in 18 months, it's a long way off, but I wish I had gone with my instinct to try something different back when I took the contract out. I was *this* close to going for an S3, but decided to remain "loyal" to Apple and looked at the fact I spent so much on apps that I couldn't walk away from the ecosystem and investment I had made in those apps.

I was the ultimate fanboy, but work colleagues and friends have been left surprised by my lack of enthusiasm for Apple since the Tuesday event. People need to wake up and realise a) Apple don't give a **** about anything but our wallets, and b) Apple are not the underdog company they were during the cute Mac vs PC days when the focus was Macs and iPods.

Brand loyalty can suck you in, but it makes you look like a sucker.

oh then Y did you campare it to NEXUS ? and compare only things which good ipad mini.

I feel like the 2nd or 3rd generation of this product will be worth getting, but as it is right now, I'm not sure if its worth 329. Maybe for some people, but not me.

They're definitely gonna put a retina display next year.

Exactly. Unless you plan to trade up to the 2nd gen next year anyway, it might be worth it to wait. It feels strange that you're being charged a premium for a product that lacks a key component that the rest of the iOS family has (forget the iPad 2 since it's main reason for existing now is for schools/government).

Or do what I plan to do (if the temptation to get the mini doesn't overtake me when I get it into my hands at the Apple store), buy a iPad 4 and if the 2nd gen mini is all that, trade in for it next year.

Hmm...

My wife wants an iPad and is interested in the mini... But the $170 gap that sits between the mini and 4gen iPad is psychologically difficult to justify.

I realize that lithe form factor is one of the 'perks' built into the mini's price, but with the A6X processor and larger retina display it feels really hard to not to just pay the extra money and 'do it right.'

Were the mini priced at $299 we probably wouldn't be making the same judgement. As stands, paying $329 for a non-retina, destined to be antiquated mini seems like a poor value proposition.

We're used to Apple leaving out one critical piece with new hardware, but this time around the handicap seems especially glaring, since this will be the only piece of iOS gear sold without a retina display.

Gen 2 mini will be great. Think we'll take a pass until then.

"we're going to work to try to get down the cost curve"

How about they start with selling the ones with more memory cheaper. It's preposterous the amount they charge for a 16 gb increase when it only costs them a few bucks more. That is a greedy attempt at ripping off their customers and puts a bad taste in my mouth concerning Apple products.
Blah blah..
Wake up, boy! Apple cannot rip off anybody. You don't HAVE to buy this gadget.
This is capitalism, the whole system is made to rip people off.

Andy Rubin (Google) says they are giving the Nexus away at near zero profits.
So if 16GB Nexus 7 is $249 at cost, how much is the iPad mini at cost?

Now include shipping, and other costs...

Yes, I would like an iPad mini at $299 too, but it's not happening. Apple can't compete on price when Google and Amazon is giving away things at cost. $329 is aggressive ... for Apple.

I've tried a Nexus 7 for awhile, IMO it's amazing, so convenient to carry around. I actually *like* the backing, it's texture allows a better grip with one hand. And the screen is very nice.

I still think the big differentiation is ecosystem, rather than detailed technical specs for the avg customer. If the customer wants iOS, it's just a choice of models after that. And if the mini is anywhere as convenient as the Nexus 7, even at it's current price, I think/guess it will sell more than all the other 7" tablets put together.

.

I agree Mr. Cook!

It's so obvious to most people who understand the dynamics here. Then there are the ever present and constant whiners out there. who never seem satisfied with anything and would rather just complain. Even before the product is released!

This is going to be a terrific product and I can't wait to get my hands on one! I will also be upgrading my iPad 3 to the new one.

I don't think that people actually care about 30$ it's more like "this is a great product that apple with their gimmicks ****ed", 2 year old CPU?512 MB ram? No retina?
Do you think if this little beauty had retina ,A6 cpu and 1gb ram would anyone complain ? No even if apple was selling it at 359$ etc.
As for the comment to people to go and get android, trust me they do and they don't get back, android is a full solution now with jb while the iPhone/iPad is still the same with a 5 year old software.
I am sure apple will give those things next year(retina ram CPU) and peeps that buy apple for years always said one thing "don't buy the 1st gen with all its problems wait for the 2nd that will mature".

Just not sure why anyone would get one. Its just to easy to justify the premium of the 4th gen regular sized one.

Here's one example. I have an 11" MacBook Air and a full size iPad isn't all that more convenient (similar footprint) to carry about and it does a lot less. iPhone5 is great and all but a bit crummy for typing long emails or prolonged surfing/reading. iPad Mini is the perfect device for me.

Selling stuff at cost doesn't make sense in the long run.

Apple's not a charity.
exactly... The two biggest sellers right now are The Kindle Fire and The Nexus 7 and those companies are employing the "free lamps to sell Oil" tactic... or "free razors to sell the blades" approach. Google wants the Ad revenue and Amazon wants books/music/app sales. So if you think Apple is going to follow that money-losing scheme, you're nuts. For what you're getting, $329 is a fine place to start.
