For this price it should have had an A6 processor and Retina display. Pretty obvious what the iPad Mini 2 will have.

I laugh at the quote of apple saying they want to make products that aren't just appealing in the moment, meanwhile we have articles here describing how droves of people rush to ditch their previous generation device when a new one comes out, even if only a few months have passed.

There are always people who want to have the most up to date devices.

I still have my iPad 1 and use it every day; it's now two and half years old. So Tim was in fact correct, that even after more than two years, my iPad still gets a lot of use. Why? Because it still runs fairly well and there are always new apps that I can download and find new uses for it.

I feel like the 2nd or 3rd generation of this product will be worth getting, but as it is right now, I'm not sure if its worth 329. Maybe for some people, but not me.

They're definitely gonna put a retina display next year.

Was just thinking the very same thing (I also thought it could've been a fraction smaller in total ratio, but until I've handled one then I don't think I should conclude).

And I wonder when the 2nd version will hit the stores - March next year or 1 year from now? And I wonder if Apple will now update both the iPad and iPad mini each October from now on, instead of each March, as they've done for the last 2 1/2 years with the first iPad (announcement) and subsequent 2 updates...

I'm not sure how much of an improvement a faster processor would really give me. Until developers create apps that require that extra power

... BAM, you hit the nail on the head, buddy!

This is exactly what is going to happen.

And now that people have mentioned it (a lot) I can already start to notice stuttering here & there so my "experience" with this iPad has already been marred.

And as this iPad (3rd gen) already struggles with some things ... how do you think it is going to be when these developers start developing with the 4th gen in mind?

It will only get worse from here on with regards to the 3rd gen iPad ...

Peter Oppenheimer said the margins on this are significantly lower than their other products. Assuming this is true (and I doubt he's in the business of lying to investors) how can people think Apple could sell this for $200 and make a "health profit". Jeff Bezos admitted the Fire is sold at cost. Amazon may be following the razor/blade model, but I can't imagine the profit margins in selling content are that high so where are they making money off it? By putting ads on the device? Wouldn't most people pay to have them removed?

Loads of people will buy this over ipad4 because of size alone.

It's mad how so many forum posters are obsessed with specs to the extent they forget about practical day to day considerations.

I would think the lack of a Retina Display is a practical day to day consideration, wouldn't you?

ROFLMAO!!! Agressively. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aggressively to decorate Apple Corporate Headquarters with gold.

I agree Mr. Cook!

It's so obvious to most people who understand the dynamics here. Then there are the ever present and constant whiners out there. who never seem satisfied with anything and would rather just complain. Even before the product is released!

This is going to be a terrific product and I can't wait to get my hands on one! I will also be upgrading my iPad 3 to the new one.

To the detractors, go get an android device, see how you like that! We'll miss ya and sooner or later you will see the difference in experience!

The problem is most consumers are morons. I will by tablet A because it costs $129 less than Tablet B. That's as far as their pea brains take it.

Good heavens man, the guy is just expressing his opinion.

By the way, I think that your conclusion is incorrect.

The 7" market such as the Fire DOES have the higher resolution screen, whereas the iPad Mini DOES NOT.

How is the iPad mini competing? Certainly not on price nor on all of the features that the consumer wants.

Have you seen the screens on both devices where you can compare? Or can you make that determination on specs alone? I'm waiting to see one in person before I proclaim the screen junk.

No..you cant. Putting a retina display in it would have put the price up, and we'd be looking at a $450 tablet.

The bottom line comes down to price - if Apple want to compete in the 7" market, they needed to keep the costs low (which is one of the reasons the Mini doesn't have things such as a GPS chip in the 3g model, unlike the full iPad).

Also, at no point have I been pushing anything about the retina being a standard for websites and apps.

"You've", as in Apple. Look, if they can include Retina in the iPod touch- they can surely do it in this device and still compete. It's a joke, and anyone defending this will probably defend Apple on every choice they make.

I'm in a household with one iPad2 and one iPad3 - and the mini is definitely going to be pre-ordered here. I don't pretend that I don't really love my Apple toys, but I've become a huge fan because I have owned/used a competitors smaller product - and that has made me want this mini all the more (perfect for traveling or back and forth to work/home). The competition gets better with each product they release, but it still doesn't come anywhere close to the experience I've had with Apple's pads. It's not just the feel of the quality or the hardware - or the operating system - there is a lot to be said for the experience of the combination of the three. Like Apple or not - there is no denying that they own the "full package".

I don't see anything wrong with paying $199-$250 for the competition because quite honestly after using them, they don't justify a higher price tag - but I have no doubt that the iPad mini will justify its price point after the first use. Just one man's opinion.

When you read on your iPad 3 and then change to the iPad 2, can you honestly say that the lack of a Retina Display on the iPad mini is no big deal?

That is a comment about yourself.

Not really. It means that you're either joking, or you're actually trying to compare rapidly changing mobile technology market to a 100 year old sugary drink. I don't know you, therefor I can't tell if you're funny or just....well, you know.

I don't get how people are asking for a Retina on the iPad mini... What resolution do you want it at? Apple really only have 2 to choose from the iPad 3/4 size, or the iPad 2 size. Otherwise they are going to yet create another App form factor. And this forum will be filled with post on Apple failing because no Apps are ready with this new size form factor.

And if Apple priced like Google or Amazon, they will have earning results like Google or Amazon. Performing as such for a continued basis, there won't even be a company to speak of. Espeically that Amazon generates revenue on service and retail sales, while Google generates revenue from Ads, they can under-price their HW and make up for their losses later. For Apple to do this, there won't be an Apple to make anything down the road. See how prices will go for the substandard crap from Amazon and Google if Apple is done for.

As it is, with the erroded margin on the iPad Mini, Apple's next quarter projection is already having a much reduced GM as compared to the same quarter last year. Stock is going to sell of primarily due to the low projection for next quarter, along with the miss against the outrageous expectation this quarter.

Apple's biggest failure is being too successful on both the product and financial fronts, and their inability to curtail this expectation. The expectation out there is ridiculous. Customer is viewing Apple as a charity, producing the next best thing at cost, while Wall St is expection Apple to go exponential forever with ridiculous estimates but suppressed P/E. Talk about rock and a hard place.

The problem is that the only reason someone would buy this product over iPad 4 is price, but the price is not that much lower.

Who is the person who can afford the $329 for this but can't afford the extra $170 to get iPad 4?

The size also matters too. It's about what the buyer prefers.

Which will be coming in six months. ;)

Didn't ya'll learn that lesson with the iPad 3?

I don't think they will keep the iPad on a 6-month cycle. They just didn't want to repeat what happened with the iPhone 4S. Going a full 16 months without a new iPhone was painful for Apple. This is when Android phones realized big market gains. It was a poor decision.

Just looking at hardware specs, the iPad mini is not as good of a deal as the smaller tablets that others are making, but it's still definitely a better deal for me overall. Bigger screen, better OS, nicer design. I like how it's smaller than the iPad, which I think is too big to be useful.

Have you seen the screens on both devices where you can compare? Or can you make that determination on specs alone? I'm waiting to see one in person before I proclaim the screen junk.
I never called the screen "junk', nor made any disparaging remarks at all.

I have seen the iPad 2 screen and the iPad 3 Retina screens. The iPad 2 screen looks really good, but the Retina screen just pops! It's beautiful.

Since the iPad Mini will have a smaller screen than the iPad 2 but the same resolution, Im sure it wil be impressive - just not Retina impressive.

For this price it should have had an A6 processor and Retina display. Pretty obvious what the iPad Mini 2 will have.

I agree, and you forgot flux capacitor, rocket launchers, and something else that would probably put the costs of building the iPad mini up....

Apple is here to make money, they can't roll out new and better gear if they go for small profit margins.

It's a bit small for me, I fancy the next iPad after this carnation as my iPad 2 is still doing fine, but I will be getting a iPad mini for girlfriend for her Christmas.....that plan then makes it easier for when I take home a new 27"iMac :D

Think about it this way. The iPad mini is basically a smaller iPad 2. (So no need to whine about the lack of an A6 or retina display; the iPad 2 doesn't have those either.)

Actually it's not a smaller iPad 2... iPad 2 is still the same as it was a year and a half ago. The iPad mini's components are the same as those used in the iPad 4. Even the FaceTime camera is higher quality than the one used in the iPad 3. The ONLY differences between the mini and the 4 is the SoC and the display. And I'm willing to bet the A5 in the mini is clocked higher than the one in the iPad 2.

So, differences between iPad mini and iPad 2...

Front camera
Rear Camera
WiFi
Bluetooth
Mobile Support
Lightning port
Siri

Not to mention, probably better microphones, speakers, etc.

It seems to me that people are ONLY looking at the A5 and the display resolution and making the assumption that is EXACTLY the same as the iPad 2. When in fact, the components are all pretty much up-to-date and inline with the iPad 4.

iOS needs an overhaul. Every time the cool new product photos are released, I look at them and say to myself: "Cool new hardware! But there's that plain-Jane iOS home screen again.....blah." And I'm brought back down to earth. I honestly think the product photos would be more effective with the screen turned off.

Change just for change sake, is not really going to improve the product, its just going to make it look different. Its not about the homescreen, its all about the Apps and the content, along with the features.

I don't get how people are asking for a Retina on the iPad mini... What resolution do you want it at? ....

Umm, I think you just answered your own question. There will be a Retina Display in it next year. Or do you really think its never going to be Retina? Right. Your developer argument holds no water. Apple's just delaying the inevitable right now in order to protect their bottom line.
