The problem is that the only reason someone would buy this product over iPad 4 is price, but the price is not that much lower.

Who is the person who can afford the $329 for this but can't afford the extra $170 to get iPad 4?

The person that really can't afford the $329 but will buy it anyway.

The Ipad 3/4 is the best tablet in the 10" market. The iPad Mini is NOT, except they are pricing it like its the best in the market.

Actually it's not a smaller iPad 2... iPad 2 is still the same as it was a year and a half ago. The iPad mini's components are the same as those used in the iPad 4. Even the FaceTime camera is higher quality than the one used in the iPad 3. The ONLY differences between the mini and the 4 is the SoC and the display. And I'm willing to bet the A5 in the mini is clocked higher than the one in the iPad 2.

So, differences between iPad mini and iPad 2...

Front camera
Rear Camera
WiFi
Bluetooth
Mobile Support
Lightning port
Siri

Not to mention, probably better microphones, speakers, etc.

It seems to me that people are ONLY looking at the A5 and the display resolution and making the assumption that is EXACTLY the same as the iPad 2. When in fact, the components are all pretty much up-to-date and inline with the iPad 4.

Screens also different it has slightly more PPI then the iPad 2.

Funny how the fanboys are so concerned that Apple make a profit. (they aren't going to donate any of it to you)

Since they are already sitting on $billions in cash, I don't think anyone has to worry about that.

Especially when they sell the iPad Mini at $329 :D

Runs a crappy rip-off OS, that Amazon (not exactly a software company) modified to its own ends, so its a variation on crap. Might be a better looking variation, but the thing that makes it crappy is not the looks, but how it works.

"1. 8.9" screen. 1" greater than iPad mini."

You're comparing size but ignoring technology and manufacturing process. You're completely ignoring quality.

"2. 1920x1200 HD display comparing to 1024X768 in iPad mini."

Again, comparing size, not quality.

"3. Dual Wifi it is."

Dubious abou this.

"4. Front HD camera. No back camera, but who is taking pictures with their lame iPad camera?"

Uh, a lot of people. This is the same camera that, when it was in the iPhone, was the number one camera on Flickr.

Plus, its a lot easier to take pictures and video with an iPad mini than an unwieldy, heavy, kindle.

Further, the camera is not the hardware, but the hardware and the software, and Apple's software is far more usable.

"5. Priced $299, comparing to $320 of iPad's mini."

Amazon's losing money and they couldn't even beat Apple by more than $30? I think Amazon's losing more than $30 per unit too!

And this for crappy hardware that is a lot heavier?

So, a crappy product is not actually even cheeper (when you count the subsidy) and you think people buying Apple products are stupid?

Really?

When you are an Apple fan-boy, you try to make everything as "lower quality" and "crap", but can't prove anything, so your points are not valid my friend.

Overall I'm happy they came out with the mini, it's a good size and form factor.

Now they just have to get over the absurd notion that a stylus has no use.

Maybe somebody just wants a smaller iPad and prefers Apple over the others.

Amazon gives the Fire away cheap and earns income from customers using the Fire to buy stuff from Amazon... It uses the Gillette model (give the razor away at cost and charge for the razor blade)...

Apple make most of it's profits from hardware sale (with exception of appleTV, which also uses the Gillette model).

.

Right, but Apple is getting double profit. From content and from hardware, and that what makes their products to be more expensive than there competitors. But they don't care, and I don't judge them because they can do it from the prospective that they know how many morons keep buying their products just because it's APPLE.

Oh yeah, I'm very happy that Apple launched the iPad Mini.

I'd love to get one and it would be a great gift. It's got that great build quality and name recognition.

I just want it to have the Retina display (present on BOTH the iPod Touch and iPhone 5) and the A6X processor.

Yes, the more powerful processor is certainly needed for some apps, even Apple's Music app which is kind of jerky and hangs when scrolling images.

Selling stuff at cost doesn't make sense in the long run.

Apple's not a charity.

I just read Apple has a 100 billion dollars, they are not poor either. Putting a retina screen on this baby wouldn't dent their bank account. That would wrap up the competition right there. Apple probably spends more money suing everyone than it would cost to just up the specs a little for the same price.

I don't know why people are surprised about the $329 starting price tag of the iPad mini? Anyone who is even remotely familiar with Apple knows they're not gonna price their products even close to the competition, they don't have to.

Or spending the extra $3 and upping the memory across the board.

The only nice thing about the iPad mini over the iPad is the diamond cut chamfered edge and slate color on the back, a la iphone 5. But that's not worth $329 in it of itself.

And how do you know it's not worth the $329? Based on what, the cost of competing tablets, or your personal opinion? It's fairly well known that Google and Amazon sell their tablets at cost. I am sure if you were to compare their specs, build quality, fit and finish, you would find that the iPad mini is far and away above them in most categories.

Change just for change sake, is not really going to improve the product, its just going to make it look different. Its not about the homescreen, its all about the Apps and the content, along with the features.

You're right. But who said anything about "just for change sake"? iOS was revolutionary 5 years ago. Now it's becoming kind of "blah". When I look at the iPad Mini photo I'm reminded of how rigid it is. How much wasted space, and how little information and flexibility is present. You certainly don't have to agree with me, but I know I'm not alone in these observations (although I'm sure among staunch Apple supporters it'll appear that way!)

It's only natural on a device that IS a screen that you'd prefer a high quality screen rather than the crappy one they've put on the mini.

The screen on the mini is a douche move, no way around it. Not as bad as the Lightning connector, aka changing to another proprietary standard and then not even giving people an adapter.... That's not only douchey, it's down right anti-competitive.

... BAM, you hit the nail on the head, buddy!

This is exactly what is going to happen.

And now that people have mentioned it (a lot) I can already start to notice stuttering here & there so my "experience" with this iPad has already been marred.

And as this iPad (3rd gen) already struggles with some things ... how do you think it is going to be when these developers start developing with the 4th gen in mind?

It will only get worse from here on with regards to the 3rd gen iPad ...
My 64GB retina iPad is crammed to the gills with apps, and I haven't noticed any performance issues. I'm not sure what your issues are.

Most of the problems people experience running apps is do to poor coding by the developers, not a problem with the iPad itself. Crashes are almost always a software problem.

I don't think anyone "knows" it's not worth $329. But the Mini's reception has been mediocre at best. Go over to the iPad forum. There are a handful of threads containing excitement about the mini, but they seem outweighed by the critical posts. Frankly more people seem interested in the low priced refurbished iPad 3's.

Apple could drop it down to $249 at the price of the Nexus 7 and I still wouldn't buy the iPad Mini over the Nexus.

Forced use of iTunes? No thanks.

If Tim Cook and others from Apple need to justify the price just a few days after launch then they know themselves that it's overpriced.

In Australia this sells for $369 and yet our Australian dollar is worth more than the US currency. The new iPod is $329 for us. Why would anyone bother getting the new iPod at that price? I can get the last generation for $178 with 16GB.

I like the size but I just don't think it's worth the money Apple is asking for it. Maybe if I was paying $329 instead of the inflated $369 I might consider it.
