If Tim believes that his contraption of a tablet, cover, and keyboard called iPad Pro is the future, then Microsoft Surface has already won.

It's interesting that Cook says this.

iPad Pro is a niche product and will sell like a niche product. Its price is high and its niche is small. I'd be surprised if it even outsold the iPad Mini. At the price that it costs with the pen and keyboard, one might as well get a Macbook with full OS X.

There will likely be an initial sales boom from those interested in it, then they'll probably flatline for through the rest of 2016.

Let's hope devs will do wonders with their apps, because so far a bigger ipad with blown up ipad apps isn't very "Pro" to me.

(Let's hope as well that website wont serve their mobile version to the iPad pro, it's already infuriating with current iPads).

Not going to happen.it's just a bigger ipad with optional stylus running phone os.
Now how can that replace a notebook? nevermind desktop?
unless he is referring to people who use their laptop/desktops for web browsing and email only.but they have already moved to ipad.ipad pro makes no difference.

OS X is dead. Look at the handwriting on the wall. Everything is moving to iOS because thats what made Apple the dominate company it is today. Look at the time frame between professional hardware refreshes. Look at the fact that Apple uses linux/PCs in its data centers, not Macs and OS X. While the decision may not be overt today, the signs are there.

O yeah, i forgot Apple now make more money from Mac's than iPads... and is selling record numbers of OS X devices... OS X is dead....

This is because Apple had priced every other iPad at least $50-100 above the right level ....
They are going too far with prices ..

Actually the introductory price of the iPad was far below the expected price and judging by the general sales numbers customers seem to be fine with the pricing. I do personally think the iPad pro configuration is insufficient for the pricing.

I think Tim is right (in a way).
Ofcourse this will not be the case as for now, and surely not with this iPad Pro version.
It could be the case that Apple might step over to an OSX version for the next iPad Pro 2 or maybe 3.
I think this iPad Pro is just an introduction for what might be coming. The expectations are high!
Like Tim said,... "The iPad Pro will be highly appealing to artists and other creatives".
As I see it, the iPad Pro will be upgraded! So it will be powerful enough for use of webdesigning, and other heavy applications than are running on a notebook and desktop at this moment.

MacRumors: the only "Apple enthusiast" (it no longer is, it's a site for haters to vent) blog where a persons individual use case gets conflated with a mass market.

Ex:

"How can it replace it for most people when I need (insert something here most consumers don't give a flying eff about)"?

I've seen diatribes against it for lack of mouse support (which literally makes me laugh out loud). I've seen diatribes about hard drive support (yeah, you can buy external HD for it). I've seen diatribes about XCode (really.... wow). This site is so full of fail. Sorry mods, I'm outta here. This site is infected with people who don't use Apple products. Time for 9to5Mac
MacRumors is no more an "Apple enthusiast" website ... Actually the website is quite good, but the forum is an haters nest since a long time ...
Read at the comments here.
I don't like the iPad Pro. I won't buy one. I don't think its price is correct.
Yet I don't feel the need to insult Tim Cook over that ....

Um, that's pretty universal behavior, not confined to MacRumors. You should get out more. Everybody has a hard time distinguishing their own personal needs to the needs of the world.
Nope ... This forum is worse than any other in this aspect ...
Tim Cook is an advertiser, not an innovator. He understands ads, not people's needs. That's why OS X has 2.5 star rating for a while now. It will not replace anything. It gives apple engineers another device to support for many years.
oh, interesting ... and I'm sure Tim Cook should ask for "arpi" advices about how to manage a huge company, right ?
He's doing so poorly lately, uh ?
Give me a break ....

Ads? I don't think you understand what Tim Cook's claim to fame is. It's operations and supply chain management not ads. He is largely responsible for Apple's success since the iPod days. Steve Jobs didn't just hand select Tim out of nowhere. It's the guy Steve trusted the most to lead the company forward. Timmy is doing a fine job.
The common behavior here is to believe Apple is a company full of idiots ....
They are doomed ...... since 1990.

I am actually enjoying watching people ranting and bashing against Tim Cook and iPad Pro. I hope they're wrong.

I know this iPad will be successful. Why? People want bigger screen since it does split screen.

We will see how it goes. I will record this entire thread and post / poke fun of you all when Apple will announce the Q1 2016.
I don't think the iPad Pro will sell a lot. I still see it like a niche product.
Most of the bashers here are people that wouldn't have bought an iPad anyway.

It's too expensive. If we all decided not to buy it at this price point they will have to bring the price down. We know they have massive profit levels and we know they can cut prices.
Yep. IMHO the pricing is totally wrong, and too high.

Ahead of the launch of the iPad Pro, Apple executives have been doing a series of interviews to drum up excitement and interest in the device. Earlier today, The Independent published an interview with Tim Cook where he shared his thoughts on the Apple Pencil and the iPad Pro's target market.

This afternoon, The Telegraph published a second interview where Tim Cook spoke further on his vision of the iPad Pro as a PC replacement and how tablets are subsuming the PC market. According to Cook, the iPad Pro will serve as a replacement for a notebook or desktop computer for "many, many people."Cook also said the iPad Pro will be highly appealing to artists and other creatives, pointing towards the ease of use of the Apple Pencil and the iPad Pro's sound system, two features he also highlighted in his earlier interview with The Independent.

According to Cook, sales of the new Apple TV were "very strong," a sentiment he echoed for the Apple Watch, which will "set a new record this quarter." Cook also said Apple doesn't have plans to introduce sensors or other health features that would cause the FDA to get involved with the device. He didn't rule out the possibility of other products that require FDA approval, like apps.Tim Cook's interview, where he also speaks on the iPad mini 4 and device cannibalization, the health benefits of the Apple Watch, and the possibility of an Apple subscription service is well worth reading over at The Telegraph.

Apple's iPad Pro will go on sale online on Wednesday, November 11. Pricing for the iPad Pro starts at $799 for the entry-level 32GB Wi-Fi only model. A 128GB Wi-Fi only model is available for $949, and a 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model is available for $1,079.

I'll take my MacBook Air all day long!

Apple has been playing the long game with the "Post-PC era". Training people to use touch screens and incrementally adding complexity, fostering an app ecosystem that has itself grown in power and complexity and staunchly refusing to add physical ports to its iOS devices are all moves that are now culminating in the iPad Pro being able to replace a PC for "many, many people". Not all people. Many of them.

Look at this chart. Look where it's headed. Fast forward another year when the A10x chip is faster than most PCs today.

Nice chart, however would you happen to have one that compares iPad chip speeds directly to PC chip speed which would back up your claim?

When Bluetooth 4.0 peripherals all but make physical ports obsolete.

Can I use Bluetooth 4.0 to get files I've worked the IPad pro on directly into a flash drive memory stick?

When new apps being designed for iPad Pro obsolete apps designed decades ago for PCs.

Yeah because no app for PCs have been updated in decades....

When iCloud negates the need for finite onboard storage and file management.

Cool, I would love to know how many years unlimited storage through ICloud will be available for a reasonable price.

Now imagine a 27" iPad mounted on an articulated arm on your desk that you can lower to manipulate while sitting at your desk or raise to face a room. I can't see many people needing a traditional PC by then.

I can imaging a flying car too while you're imagining a 27" iPad and chances are a flying car would be cheaper and actually has a chance to exists in this century.

Keep drinking the kook-aid

I think many, many people will indeed buy a iPad Pro
That's for sure.
But I'm not sure they will replace their computers with the iPad Pro...

And, AGAIN, we'll see Apple saying how iPad Pro sales have beat all expectations (and yet never quote actual sales numbers) and all the Apple Lemmings will file into the Apple Store and buy the latest and greatest Apple gadget because they can't help themselves. As usual...
Please enlighten us: who are those "Apple Lemmings" you are speaking about ? Because you seem to be so superior to them ....

Lots of ranting from people on a Mac forum. Obviously Tim is not talking about this demographic. For most users the desktop is totally overkill. So, he's right. I'm not one of these users personally, but he's not talking about me or probably you. This also doesn't mean that the desktop isn't going to be developed. It's still a significant chunk of Apple's business, and if they're not going to take it seriously, someone else will. There's always Linux!

it might for those using a laptop for media consumption, but not those doing real media creation

Most people use a laptop / desktop to surf the web, send emails, post on Facebook and blogs and play games...thats it.

The number of people that do content creation are a small portion of that population....its pretty fair to say most people can use tablets as desktop/tablet replacements.

Regardless of whether this is a desktop or laptop replacement I am buying several. I have been waiting for a larger iPad.

For me, my iPads are mostly used passively to watch media, read email and consume content. I rarely compose anything more than a few emails and never use any apps like Pages, Numbers, Keynotes, Word, etc. When I want to do any of those things I head to my iMac or Macbook Pro.

Silly comment from the CEO of a company who is seeing their PC marketshare rise and is pushing the Enterprise strategy with deals with IBM. He really should simply say the iPad Pro will be one more arrow in your quiver when looking for productivity.

I'm not writing this off, the iPad is a good and proven product, but it's not a Pro product unfortunately.

Being able to draw with the new pencil is great, but tablets really aren't there for over 90% of professional stuff I do on a computer - pro apps are complex, touch screens don't work well for accuracy and precision, and the apps I use simply don't exist for iOS with the same array of functionalities as the OSX version I use on my rMBP.

This reminds me of a lot of fashion designer interviews. A lot of outlandish statements are made to get a rise out of the press and public.

Then it is the old, "You hated it, you laughed at it and you bought it!"

The fact is, the iPad Pro is really the iPad Large at its premium price - the better to doodle with, my dear.

The size and weight screams for it to be configured so that you give your arms a rest and, like iPads before it, spend even more money to make it more laptop-like.

I found this tidbit the most interesting quote from Tim re FDA review.

"But you can begin to envision other things that might be adjacent to it -- maybe an app, maybe something else."

Adjacent? Nothing more adjacent that a smart strap connected via the 6 pin diagnostic port. Creating a smart strap with FDA approved required sensors allows Apple to sell the Watch to the main stream without the liability of missed or incorrect medical data while creating a new market for medical professionals with a "Pro" branded watch that will ship with the new smart strap. Lawyers and Doctors will both approve.

Nice work Apple.

I travel a lot. To have a device that does "nearly" everything a PC does that doesn't need to boot or shutdown where I can run full version of 365, utilise a browser in a full screen as well as other communication apps. For me.`

Productivity (O 365), File System (Documents app / local, Dropbox, Dropbox / Cloud) Communications (mail, IM, Slack, Yammer clones etc) , Advanced Creation / Pencil, Architecture, Sketching Music, Web. Done.

Requires a Paradigm shift. It will never "be" a PC, though it may replace one. My 2011 MBA is humming along and will continue to do so; I won't buy another - I won't have to. In fact, that may be my last MacBook. Onward ...

Go to any college or coffee shop, everyone has a MacBook not an iPad

I disagree. iPad is being squeezed. Its never been an alternative experience by much from a software perspective, only size.

larger iPhones, and more portable MacBooks are squeezing iPad big time.

Apple are starting to make iPad a more unique proposition with the "pro" but its still far behind. they should have started the iPad Pro line back in 2014.
