But the big questions, is WHY? Why go through all that trouble? Why take something that doesn't do what you want and invest all that effort to accomplish, what? Go get a Macbook Air.
And Apple will sell you one. For me the 12" MacBook and iPad mini 4 is the ideal combo. But some people might prefer an iPad Pro. If it works for them, why not?

It doesn't matter about price. The point is still the same. The iPad in whatever variations and configurations people choose is more than enough for most people's computing needs.

If that were true then desktop's would be history based on the ipad airs, apple has said sales are flat on ipads. This is just a bigger ipad. People that want to replace their desktop with an ipad have already done so. I don't think this is going to cause a flood of changeovers or it would have already happened.

I know a lot of people who only have an iPhone and iPad. I don't know how the iPad Pro will be any different for these people than a regular iPad.

Yes it will, but no more so than the other iPads. Or at least not much more. It obviously depends what you use your main computer for.
Not necessarily. The other iPads don't have dedicated keyboards or the Apple Pencil. Plus the screen size is that of a notebook.

I think many, many people will indeed buy a iPad Pro
I hope you are correct, for Apple's sake.

However my feeling is that this could be a very soft launch. One which may come and go with very little attention, other than Apple's World Class Hype, and the Press Coverage from those Apple has aligned with over the years.

Consumers? I can see them easily ignoring the Pro with the exception being the adoring Apple faithful, and the ones that can truly use the Pro for their graphics / art endeavors.

Beyond that, this is a bit of a dead fish.

So my 5 year old nephews would be great with an iPad Pro. Don't laugh too hard, though. In a few years they could be the rebellious teens who are responsible for creativity in the tech industry.

News flash. In its worst quarter in 2 years the iPad sold 80% more units than the Mac in its 2nd best quarter ever. If Apple gets 20% of iPad buyers to get this instead of a cheaper iPad it will be a success for Apple.

That's not a desktop replacement though, it's an ipad replacement and I believe that's how it it will work out. It's a win for apple because of the massive price, but I think MOST that can use an ipad for a desktop replacement are already doing so.

To me the question is, can the Ipad Pro, can it replace the Ipad Air.
I use the Air to read books, does the size of the Pro, does it become a burden, is it just too big for this scenario?

I read books in PDF, the Ipad Mini is just too small to render this books, to an agreeable size. The Air is great for PDF's, I do wonder if the Pro is just too big.

I also have a 128GB version of the Air, so I really don't see myself getting the Pro, that version would come at 949.

"Cook also said the iPad Pro will be highly appealing to artists and other creatives"

As a professional artist I have to say it's not appealing at all really.
As a graphic designer and typographer, I can also say it's not appealing at all really. Gee, how many typefaces can I choose from? How can I create a PDF file from my finished work? How do I get that PDF file to my printer? Oh, am I supposed to use iCloud? Do I even TRUST iCloud? Do the files on the iPad "Pro" work interchangeably with InDesign and QuarkXPress?

God, Tim, just go back to counting beans, and turn the Creative Department over to someone truly creative….. and no, I don't mean Jony Ivie.

Here is a magical idea that no one seems to wrap their heads around. You can have both an iPad and a Mac... (drum roll please) together! Sheeesh. Everyone is acting like their is a government law that forces people to give up their PCs or Macs when they buy an iPad.

He is right though, despite very few of you think otherwise. "Many many people" will drop their PC for Pro. Not everyone for sure, and not majority, nor will be most of us... but "many many" sounds right.

Mathematically, many many will and many many will not, are not necessarily mutually exclusive. (manywill)% + !(manywill)% != 1

Bingo. I like my ipad but it will not be replacing my desktop and a bigger ipad doesn't affect that in the least.

I see the draw for some but most have ipads for portability and for most of the everyday browsers and email checkers I don't see a lot shifting a bigger hand held touch device.

We shall have to wait and see though.

"Request desktop site."

"Request desktop site."

"Click to request desktop site."

This has more to do with site design and development decisions than it does the iPad. Most of my Air2 browsing gives me sites that look and function exactly like they do on my desktop and laptop (sans a few minor responsive tweaks, and a few big sites I visit like YouTube that probably want you migrating to their app anyway). The Air2 display and resolution is high enough that you usually don't have to make many adjustments to a site for it to be fully functional. The iPad Pro display being the size it is will certainly not need a mobile site most of the time.

I don't really see it replacing laptops for anybody the current Air 2 hasn't already. My parents dont have a computer at home. They have them at work, but at home an iPad has already replaced their need for a computer. How does the pro do that better? I get its bigger, and the pencil but those don't really remove any of the issues of using only a tablet as a computer.

A retina macbook air would replace notebooks and desktops for nearly ALL people.

Tim needs to stop living in a fairy tale make believe world of disruption and unicorns and sell boatload after boatload of retina macbook airs. I mean, what the hell apple.

Can it run Xcode or other IDEs? No. Can it run any of the full desktop Adobe Suite? No. Can it run the full MS Office Suite? No.

Do most people with the money to buy an iPad need to do any of the above? Possibly. Or possibly not. I know of too many business and home laptops with some of the above software installed but never used. If that number is over one million (around 2% of laptops sold per year), then that's good enough for Tim Cooks "many many".

It will replace some traditional computers, but so did the iPad. I don't expect any significant change compared to the smaller versions.

It's not the screen size, it's he lack of computational power, built-in keyboard, mouse and software.

Originally I was going to say that Tim should pass it to the left, but a lot of us here are more "power" users than not (a niche forum), so no we need OS X.

However, most people with laptops use it for more mundane tasks, which the iPad Pro would actually be very good for.

Yep, my statement exactly and most have done so also because they like sitting on the couch, etc. using them. I think there will be some surprise a.t the difference in using a hand held touch device this size. I see it replacing more ipads than desktops, but even then I don't think it will be a lot. I think it will be more a certain part of the graphics crowd.

Just a friendly reminder Tim is not the only one making decisions.

He may make the final one, but I can assure you Apple is a well oiled highly successful large scale business that has an army of very talented people.

I do believe it's the decline in iPad sales that's causing Tim to push hard on the "laptop replacement" sales pitch.

If the 9.7" iPad didn't start a wave of transition from the laptop form factor to the tablet, it's sure not going to happen now that Apple has an even larger, heavier, more expensive model, hitting the shelves right before the holidays.

Bad timing in my opinion.
IMO the holidays work in Tim's favor as most people will be taking days off from work. Assuming the experience is good people will start finding ways to get work done on their iPads even moreso now that there is a larger display and a keyboard and a pencil.

Yes, Cooke is wrong and you are right; that's seems like totally obvious... (sic)
Not like he doesn't have an army of people running the numbers...
And IBM talking to business people well, every single minute of the day... (because that's their jobs)
I think they got a better grasp of the market than you.

People, will AGAIN, be all surprised at what going to happen here, as usual..

Well I was talking about it people buying it to replace their desktop computers and while there might be a few people that do that I doubt that is where most sales where come from. It kinda goes along with Crazy Eddie talking about the stereo sound system as a selling point. A bunch of sales to creative types with the pencil and sales to folks looking forward to a bigger iPad (myself included) but this being a desktop replacement? Not much more than a regular iPad is. Just my opinion.

I do agree that many people own and never use the laptops they bought.

However there's one big qualifier.... they didn't need the laptop in the first place.

After the newness wore off, it sits collecting dust.

If they like the idea of using an iPad, they've likely already bought one.

If they did not, they sure as heck are not going to spend a thousand dollars for a big bulky model.

I remain convinced the Pro model will only sell to devoted Apple lovers and some that can use it for their work.

Time will prove me right or wrong... :D
