That's a lie.

I would love to see Tim Cook typing a 14 pages paper with the iPad, and at the end if he is still smiling, maybe I will believe it.

iPad cannot simulate the responsiveness that a physical keyboard provides with. In particular the keys of a keyboard are not only aimed at augmenting the response when typing but also slow down the action of pressing something by absorbing the impact; something that an iPad screen cannot do since the screen is rigid.
So no... I don't believe that crap (unless he doesn't type and then only dictates) because after a few minutes using a touch screen you get very tired...

Don't know about Tim, but I've done it. I occasionally write short stories, and some of them hit that sort of length. (I'll be the first to admit they're not terribly good. Middling fan-fiction grade at best, but that has nothing to do with being written on my iPad, or even iPhone.) Most of the autocorrect issues I have come from unusual names, or made-up jargon in the stories.

The trick is that you don't need to thump the screen with your finger tips like you were taught to do with a normal keyboard. You don't need to press anything down, so lightly tapping the screen (such that your physical keyboard wouldn't be registering the presses) is sufficient, and helps you pick up any speed you might lose due to the change in feedback.

I type about 75 wpm on a good keyboard. I used to be faster, but most of my typing is C/C++ or C# these days, so I'm more used to reaching for strange punctuation than some of the 'normal' stuff.. Last time I tested on the iPad (almost a year ago), I hit just shy of 60 wpm.

85 words per minute on a nice clicky physical keyboard drops to about.... well actually I can't stand typing on an ipad so I don't use one. I HATE "punching a flat piece of glass" with my fingers. My iphone I similarly don't like texting very much.

So don't "punch" the glass with your fingers. You don't need to press that hard. The amount of contact you need on the screen wouldn't even register on a standard, physical keyboard.

Sure - virtual keyboards are fine for web browsing and the odd email - but dont go overboard - anything else and they are PITA, especially for touch typists. Firstly they need tactile feedback. On a physical keyboard I know if I've typed the wrong letter - cant do that on iPad without looking.

Wait, what are you looking at when you touch type? The wall? You should be able to tell immediately by looking at your screen!

Also, I really think that typing with the onscreen keyboard of the iPad is really quite nice in portrait mode. My accuracy between that and a physical keyboard is not that different. My only gripe is that the delete key can feel too small at times.

"How good are you at the physical keyboard which confounds a lot of people?"
"Quite good, I think if you stick with it a little while you get quite good at it and the autocorrection is quite good"

He's saying people should be using the virtual keyboard despite being confounded

You do realize that most people are equally 'confounded' by a physical keyboard when they first start using it? It takes about the same level of practice to be come proficient with the virtual keyboard as it did to become proficient with a physical one. (Slightly less if you're already familiar with the basic QWERTY layout.)

I have to admit....I am a fan of Tim Cook. There is something very likeable about him.:)

I agree without hesitation. I have a lot of confidence in Tim. The more time that passes, the more time he has to do all the things he excels in.

In fact I feel very good about all the top execs at the present. Give them time together and Apple will be even stronger.

...and speaking of the iPhone 5. Why isn't Tim using one here? What's he waiting for... the 5 - s ?????

Maybe the 4s does everything he needs, and he doesn't want to go through the process of swapping phones for the sake of it? edit: or maybe he has too many non-lightning peripherals :D

The one darn thing Apple needs to work on and Tim has no interest in it.

I keep filling out 'froms'. So much for Auto correct.

I am a writer by trade and I need an Apple lit-from-behind (illuminated) keyboard with the layout of the Logitech DiNovo Edge (no number keypad) with a USB chord and using the silent form of the ALPs Matius Tactile Pro keystrokes so it doesn't keep the whole family awake when I work at night.

There you go Tim. Every writer in the world would thank for that keyboard.

Sounds like you really want an MBA 11" - maybe with a quieter keyboard?

That awkward moment when autocorrect changes my common typo of "thatits (that it's)" to "that tits."

I just tested this on an iPad 3 and an iPad mini and both autocorrected "thatits" to "that it's".

Maybe you're training your autocorrect by typing "tits" a lot?

Typical CEO. He should talk to his IT department about ditching keyboards and see what they think.

Typical IT department, assuming their use case is the most significant. ;)

I don't crap about the keyboards comment.

Did he say anything about what product was going to be produced in the US. Mac mini, imac, or Mac Pro?

www.Autocorrectfail.org would suggest autocorrect doesn't work as well as Tim thinks it does.

I love autocorrect for the funny lines it creates. I always read my messages before sending to business or clients. Best to avoid serious fails in those circumstances.

Do you actually think that most of those are real? Sit down some time and try to replicate some of those 'fails' without actually typing exactly what they say.

... or using the phone at all when temperatures are below or near zero and you've got gloves on to keep your fingers from freezing off.

Gloves do exist that let you keep using your phone even when it's freaking cold out. I needed a new pair of gloves last winter, and spent $20 on a pair. (They come cheaper, but I'm not a fan of the stretchy knit gloves.)

Man, I am really digging the possibility of trashing Apple at every possible turn. Not because I hate apple, but because they are beginning to personify stupid at every turn.

Their fascist eco-system is really starting to annoy the ****** out of me. No keyboards, no optical drives, put everything valuable in a 'cloud' where you have no tangible items to own, where you pay someone else to control your information? No thanks.

There must be some form of nerd revolution, pranks, or attack to mount against apple.

Apple is now my enemy.

[…] If I was AAPL shareholder [sic] I would be really concerned that "my" CEO is not using the most productive available tools for the job (which is a desktop computer - when in the office - and a laptop - on the go)
I'd love to know how you got the right to say what, exactly, are the most productive tools for someone else's job.

So when are we going to to see the first Macbook Air with a touch screen as a keyboard / extended desktop?

Met him at Grand Central after having thrown the interview. He was actually really nice. Oh and I got news. I told him that I was tired of my Samsung flat screen TV. He looked at me straight in the eyes and said: "do you seriously expect me to comment on that?' with...his...very...slow...voice.
Very nice guy, wish I could have spent more time with him!

Its easy to give up a keyboard when your currently produced one sucks. Don't believe me? Dig out a 2007 12" powerbook ,type on it for a while and see you will see how much more inferior the current apple keyboard is.

this is one thing Tim does not understand about common people... I know so many executives in my company (director and above, like VP, SVP, EVP) who can do 80% of what they do writing short emails. After all, at their level they pretty much attend meetings and ask questions and review things and provide feedback over vast quantities of projects/issues. An iPad works fine for that. In fact, I often see my VP coming to office with only her iPad. But come on, the people who actually work on the deliverable (individual contributors like me), we spend hours going through Business Object or Eclipse or Excel or Word or Toad or Salesforce.com or Oracle ERP tools, trust me we NEED OUR KEYBOARD.
