I develop macOS/iOS software for a living since 2005. I'm clear-headed Apple fan, and I know that Apple doesn't always use the best components, only what you can see and touch because this is what sells. Open any mac computer, and you'll see a cheap motherboard, cheap memory. Apple discontinued Apple Cinema Display until now because it didn't provide a competitive image anymore. Apple makes an awesome design, awesome look-and-feel, great UX. At the same time, iPhone 11 still doesn't have 5G. Sometimes Apple fails really hard, like with touch bar w/o Esc and butterfly keyboard. Otherwise, they wouldn't roll back with new 16" MacBook pro. You definitely can assemble much much better PC using ASUS, Corsair, Crusial, higher grade GPUs, etc. I know Apple products from inside and from outside, software and hardware. Apple products are mediocre-to-high, but the ecosystem is very good. So it's not only about the quality. Apple is not the highest quality.

“ Apple is not the highest quality.”

Which computer/phone manufacturer uses the “highest quality” components?

You're not talking about quality, you're talking about scale. There are many components that are the best but couldn't possibly be used by Apple because Apple builds and sells hundreds of millions of devices for worldwide product launches. Of course there are better motherboards and memory out there. They are made in low quantities for boutique applications, user assembled kits and component resellers. They have no place in Apple's supply chain. Compare Apple to any major manufacturer that sells similar quantities and you will see that Apple uses the best components and if they don't, it's because the best components failed to meet their testing standards like 5G modems that draw too much power for instance. This is coming from a clear-headed Apple customer since 1979.

If they are using such cheap components then why do Macs typically run for so long?

Lol, how is green “left field” & blue perfectly normal?
Ummmmm.... aren’t both of colors equally common??
Blue is a more 'conservative' colour. Blue shoes, blue suits, blue cars, all much more common than green ones (at least for men in regard to apparel).

Samsung also only has 5G in a special model, their mainstream flagship doesn't have it either.

Japanese chemistry & technology has been at the forefront of color process for a while now. The country produces some of the best paint pigments in the world. So much so, that after the Fukushima disaster supply was of concern in the auto industry on a global level.

This is fascinating stuff. I always find ‘behind the scene’ articles of how something is produced or made across the globe for a product that we’re holding in our hands is pretty unique.

Also, I think it’s nice to see Cook involved with the manufacturing process to see what actually what is implemented into an iPhone. I think a lot of people envision him just ‘sitting behind a desk’, when he works _directly_ with the suppliers.

Many people loved Apple's new keyboards, some others hate them. You can't please everyone all the time, but Apple will never stop driving forward with product innovation. If you can't stand change and advancement, I wouldn't recommend buying into Apple's ecosystems.

Changing something <> necessarily = Innovation. The keyboard was clear proof of that and apart from the processor, much of the 11 Pro was playing catch-up with others. (Night view and telephoto etc..)

You are drinking too much from the Kool Aid marketing fountain though if you think they use the very best quality *all* the time.

I didn’t see him say any other company uses high quality components. Deflection noted.

he’s right. Hardware wise Apple is nothing special. Software is where it at.

"I'll tell you what, drop 15% on the unit price, and we'll send Tim Cook and a photographer to your factory. Journalists bribes come out of your end!"

I’m going to challenge your assessment that “iPhone 11 still doesn’t have 5G.” It just doesn’t need it yet.
Read this. It can be applied to this topic.

Hardly a deflection - nothing’s being deflected. It is a simple question. Unless you’re his spokesperson or emissary, please let him answer.

THIS.

£1000+ ‘Pro’ phones with proprietary ports, same old form factor, 64Gb base memory AND without 5G isn’t a phone I want to replace my iPhone X with and keep a few years, which is the point I guess.

Who gives a whotsit if it’s green?

I’m an Apple fan too, but I’m not oblivious.

The question I posed to *him* (or her) has nothing to do with you. And nothing to do with defending Apple. It's a very simple question that stands on its own.

Just my $0.02, but I think Apple should have offered the Base iPhone 11 in the Midnight Green as well, priced at a slight premium to the others.

I'm sure it would have sold well, & NOT really cannibalized sales of the 2019 iPhone Pro models.

I dunno about all that.... a lot of tough men that hunt and/or fight for America may disagree that green isn't as manly as blue, for clothes- and I’ve never seen a farmer on a tractor & snickered to myself that his John Deere was emasculating him.
