I don't know why Apple soldered the Mini RAM, especially seeing as it takes up about as much space as it would if it wasn't soldered. I mean, the AirPort card can be removed but not the RAM? Makes no sense.

On the other hand, there is no way they could ever try and keep every customer happy. The "tons of money" you mention would dwindle pretty quickly. I don't even think Apple could manage to make all the users on MacRumors happy- no matter how many billions they throw at the things people complain about here.

But yes, in the case of the Mac Mini, returning to removable RAM would be a simple solution to increasing goodwill.

It's very simple to keep people happy.
When you upgrade a machine, actually upgrade it.
Don't go backwards.
Come out with an OS that doesn't look like a 10 year old designed it.
Come out with an OS that is ready for prime time without major bugs.
OK, I'm sure even these things won't keep 100% of it's customers happy but at least they won't be pissed off

Having two sockets vs soldered is an INSANE amount of space difference. You are thinking they just take the chips and solder them on in the same size they are, just remove the sockets. The chips are flat against the board when they do that so the amount of space they are saving is actually kind of big.

Do you even see where the memory is on iFixIt? I'll give you a hint, the protruding chip is actually the SSD not the memory.

This would be valid if they changed the dimensions of the Mac Mini with this iteration. Thus requiring more compact internals than the previous one.

however, thats not the case. In the previous Mini, they were able to succesfully fit a Motherboard with 2 SODIMM sockets, and a standard 2.5" drive. The motherboard also had enough room for a quad core 'laptop' class CPU and it's cooler.

The new Mac Mini uses the same chassis dimensions and size. Yet puts in only a dual core ultra low voltage CPU with coldered on memory and PCI SSD.

there was no legitimate reason for the switch other than profit. Apple is likely using the identical motherboard/chipset setup in the new Mini as they are their MBA's. Thus saving them costs by orderign larger orders of that same setup than having to have 2 different internal setups to buy.

This has zero benefit to the consumer or end user and is a profit pushing change only. It adds yet more to an insanely HUGE bottom line to do what? appease the shareholders.

All theyve done is make the new version of the Mini slower, while removing possibility of expansion for those who wanted it

I've always said that the day Apple makes anything that the majority on this forum likes, then they're in real trouble.

"It's too thin!'
"It's too wide!"
"He's too gay!"
"They soldered a pizza to the motherboard!"
"They left out the RS-232 serial interface!"

Amazing that Apple makes any money at all, what with them doing the exact opposite of what the armchair CEOs round here want them to do.

LOL... funny, but true. I mean, I see many valid complaints around here. But for every complaint is a device made by another company that already addresses the need in question. Apple makes something for everyone, but it doesn't make everything for everyone. Huge distinction.

But see, all of that is subject to interpretation. iOS 8 and Yosemite have been working fine for tons of people, and I, along with many others, happen to like the look of Apple's recent operating systems.

It's really not that simple to keep people happy.

He's the iPod "Rasputin" Classic killer. That's where the award comes from.
Best CEO of the world - Best Bean Counter.
Talking about piling up tons of cash, different words same meaning

David Pyott, CEO of Allergen
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, Chairman of Solar City
James McNerney, CEO of Boeing

Decent try (though you aren't OP). Except I don't know why the Boeing CEO would even make a long list.

I like Tim. He has pushed the company in many different directions that Steve would not have. Apple Pay, bigger iPhones, Beats. All are interesting expansions. I don't call out the watch since it is not here yet and because I think that Steve was aware of that so not 100% Tim.

Tim has also taken Apple's clout and started using it in the political sphere, especially with his coming out. Steve clearly had no interest in the politics or philanthropy (with the exception of project (R)ed). Tim has been way more active here.

I think that as Apple continues to mature as a company, Tim is leveraging its strength and size to influence beyond the comfort zone of technology. Time will tell how well they do, but clearly, Tim is thinking way outside the Apple orchard -- fashion, music (beyond itunes), politics.

To be fair, the new Mac Mini is cheaper than the old one. Is that really "zero benefit to the consumer or end user"?

You could acknowledge that Apple passed cost savings on to its customers... not

iCloud -fail +WIN as it always has been. Phone destroyed. Buy new phone. Restore. +++WIN
iCloud drive -fail Neutral - Proof of concept with a lot of potential
iPad Mini 3 -fail No one cares
No Apple TV updates -fail No one cares - at all. TV is a pet, not a strategy.
iPhotos (or lack thereof) -fail Never heard of iPhotos - However, iPhoto is +WIN with MUCH MUCH better integration with iOS 8 devices and PhotoStream. It will never be Google Picassa... but that's fine, I'll just use Picassa.

;)

give the guy some time...did you want it ALL fixed in one fiscal year? Come on, be realistic

No doubt... not everything is about the consumer. That's how (all large) companies work. Some projects are strategic and stagnant because responsible companies don't bite off more than they can chew.

Find another company that is successful with desktops, residential access points & backup hardware, laptops, tablets, multiple operating systems, applications for multiple operating systems, phones, managing "their own" programming languages, maintaining controls over 3rd party developers, music sales, developing new products (vehicle integration, watch, who knows what else), operating retails stores that sell, support, fix, and warranty replace hardware, acquire other companies like it's fun, deal with non-stop law suits, so on....

I doubt anyone on here could handle being a Chief Executive for a single one of those.... nevermind ALL of them!

I'm underwhelmed by this selection. I think there's been so many more influential people in 2014.

only 1 model is cheaper by $100 and once you add any addition you are at the same price.

(not to mention that its $100 in US market, other markets didn't see the same price drop on the low end model, in Canada it was only $50 cheaper and at $549 it is a terrible price. This is the Apple premium tax right here)

Even the most expensive models that are at the same price points as the previous models are of the lower performing hardware.

dropping 1 model by $100 doesn't mean you've miraculously past the savings to the consumer when its a single solitary model.

the new Mini was a step backwards. Completely.

:D Of course I complain abut things too (like the App Store and app review). Just not all the time.

I'm underwhelmed by this selection. I think there's been so many more influential people in 2014.

But Apple drives clicks and eyeballs and Cook is CEO of Apple. Plus I don't think this list was about most influential people but best CEOs.

I don't get it. It's not like he took a failing company and turned it into a success. Apple has been doing great for over a decade. Why not give the title to a CEO who has actually turned things around?

It's better than the previous face on picture that looked like a Ryan Stiles mug shot.

I'd pretty much agree with this list. Software especially has been quite iffy. Not just big things like iOS 8.0.1. iTunes is a disaster that they said on TMO "Should be withdrawn". Photos is approaching vaporware status. The list goes on and on but the over whelming impression I get is that software QC is asleep at the switch.

The thing is: Apple are now marketing to people who want to press at most 3 buttons and the rest touching here and there. Most of their customers now have not a clue what RAM is or what it does. Asking Apple for non soldered RAM is like asking McDonald's for non-GMO. Apple is leaving their informed base behind and moving to a McDonald's model. They are experts at leaving stuff behind.

Haha... You complainer. :p

Many people on here need to catch a flight to DDG and travel 2 hours SW, for a couple week vaca, then we'll see how critical they are of others.

Started with Macbook G4, Apple stock gave me more money than I spent for all apple products.

I guess it really doesn't take much to be named Person of the Year or CEO of the year anymore. I mean, really, what did Tim do again? I'm pretty sure Apple stock would continue to climb anyways, and let's be honest...the iPhone 6 launch was far from magnificent. Shortages prevailed and it's still buggy after all these months.

Either I'm missing something, or all the other CEO's around the world have been on vacation all year.

It kind of shows you how depraved the leaders of our society have become. I am so psyched for the boomers to end up drooling over themselves in nursing homes.

Oh, save maybe billions of people from dying of a horrible death of vomit and poop and pain? You get honorable mention.

Bump my portfolio price while furthering my political agenda? Greatest Person on Earth!!!!

But making the stock rise by 40% and selling record numbers of iPhones for consecutive years is. And he did these things after filling in for Steve Jobs.

He had his work cut out for him.

All he had to do was increase the size of the iPhone to satisfy the millions of customers who were begging for it for years. Anyone who took the position of CEO could have done that and the end result would have been exactly the same: massive sales.

T-Mobile.

The guy ain't perfect, and he's still all about making money, but if anyone is changing the consumer world for the better in the US right now, it's him.

You did what nobody else has done in this thread- name a credible alternative.

Cook has done an awesome job in my opinion, but Legere is all sorts of crazy in just the right way.

But they set records in 2011, 2012, and 2013 too, back when the iPhone was still tiny.
