I don't think any cares about that segment as apple is fifth in computer sales world wide. Just because you filter the criteria to meet your marketing and tout it as a success and aren't competing against any other apple hardware companies, doesn't mean jack in the landscape of PC's being sold

Cheap and common sells. There's always more junk to go around. Flood the market with garbage and claim large share numbers. Easy.

Um, this is exactly how bonuses should work. Do a great job, get a great bonus. Shareholders made tons of money during that time too.

This is totally the opposite of the bankers who continue to receive huge bonuses while losing the shareholders huge amounts of value while basically breaking the entire world economy at the same time.

-kap

Except with bankers, the bonus is often their primary mode of compensation. A lot of people don't get that. The term bonus is really a misnomer - it is actually a lump sum payment that is expected, and in some cases, contractually required.

My cousin worked for an investment bank for a while. His actual salary was maybe 75K. Sounds good, except he was working 100 hour weeks and living in San Francisco. His bonus, had he stayed, would have been equal to or greater than his salary.

In the financial industry the bonus is not a "special reward for a job well done," it is a *normal mode of compensation.* Anyone in that industry who does not get a bonus immediately quits, and in some cases sues for money owed.

Sorry for the aside, I just get tired of the ire directed at bonuses in the financial industry. In the case of a handful of top executives who drove the company into the ground, that ire is well deserved, but for the rest of the employees of these banks, for whom the "bonus" is a primary mode of compensation, that ire is nothing more than populist nonsense based on not understanding non-typical compensation structures.

I said software devlopers so everybody thinks hardware sales?

WTF!? people.

You said:

How about using that to hire some more software developers and protect what Niche computer markets you have left?

I'm sorry. To me "computer markets" means hardware.

You know, the computer is hardware?

You probably should have said software markets if that's what you were talking about.

I said Niche markets, which is its Pro market hardware and software.

See, that's what you should have said in your first post. Saying "computer markets" is NOT the same as saying "Pro market hardware and software." You didn't even use the word "Pro" at all in your first post, which would have been helpful.

It sure makes more sense now that you've explained it, but you can't expect us to understand all that if you're going to leave out key details and only tell us several posts later.

Bloody hell, $5mil?

How about using that to hire some more software developers and protect what Niche computer markets you have left?

Agreed. That's too much money for the little time he was there. He couldn't have done too much damage to the company even with poor decisions for the short time he was acting CEO.

call it what you want, i would call it 90% market share for hardware supporting one OS. to me, stock price and market cap don't mean jack, can it get the job done that i need to, if so, its a success. Not sure when the "premium" segment was created, but i don't think anyone cares as again, apple is fifth in overall hardware sales. Plus, they are only competing with themselves.

Cheap and common sells. There's always more junk to go around. Flood the market with garbage and claim large share numbers. Easy.

With the stock that adds up to about $20 Million dollars. Not bad for 6 months worth of work :). I wonder if they were a little bit afraid of him being poached by a competitor.

Being CEO of Apple for 6 months has got to look really good on a resume. I'm sure he could easily find many permanent CEO offers.

I'd rather see Tim than Phil at the helm. Phil is a great guy and all, Tim just inspires more confidence in the brand and vision.

Completely agree. Cook, like Jobs, actually sounds real when he speaks. Phil always sounds so fake, like every word he is saying is part of some carefully prepared marketing script.

MacBook Pro? Right? Ok, convince me why it's "Pro". I see a lot of ignorance from Apple regarding what should be called "Pro". Crappy graphic cards, crappy RAID controllers on Mac Pro and so on. "Pro" just doesn't exist in Apple's dictionary.

mmmm ... So given the following, if Apple don't dominate the pro market most of the PC pro machines are sub $1,000?

Joe Wilcox:

"Move over Microsoft. Apple can claim big, big market share numbers, too. According to NPD, in June, nine out of 10 dollars spent on computers costing $1,000 or more went to Apple. Mac revenue market share in the "premium" price segment was 91 percent, up from 88 percent in May."

Wow, 5 mill for a few 'months' of work to take over for jobs...I can only imagine how much jobs actually cashes in on.

Pro market? Where can I find it in current Apple lineup? Have you just woken up from a 10 year nap?

It should be obvious to everyone by now that apple have moved their focus from the pro market to the consumer market.

it was a a wise decision - they've increased their profits.

it would be a wise decision for pros to move their focus to other manufacturers soon.

Apple have no need to support pro users, we don't generate as much profit as the consumer market does.

=B=

PS good luck in the champions league! :)

Bloody Hell, how about $10 million. Thats the least they could give the guy for managing a multi BILLION dollar company and doing it well.

Apple is sitting on billions of dollars. Every single developer they need, they have the money for.

I would bet Mr Cook will be putting some of that money back into the economy which will keep people working to make the toys he's going to buy with his wad o' cash.

Most macs are above $1k so that in relation to a pro market is irrelevant.

fabricated segment. That tells me that most folks are getting more for less and apple refuses to compromise on their profit margins, as their quality is debatable.

Omg

For G-d's sake, cash in the stock, buy a house cash on Telegraph Hill, and live off the $5M and its interest for the rest of your life! Why suffer working for another 10-15 years?!

A computer consists of both hardware and software. - Texbook answer.

Even with this info, it's still a confusing post.

"...and protect what Niche computer markets you have left"

So we've established that you're talking about their Pro software and hardware. You sure make it sound like that's the ONLY thing Apple has left. "What you have left" is pretty exclusive. I don't say that "this sandwhich is what I have left" if I also have a soda and some chips. I'd say that when I ONLY have a sandwhich.

Did you mean to say "protect their last market that is niche?" That allows for other, non-niche Apple markets to exist.

That's what I was arguing: That Apple has non-niche markets. Your first post seemed to say otherwise. I understand that's not what you meant now, but at the time that's what your first post reads like.

Ok, this is a little pet peeve of mine that I've seen numerous times on MacRumors comments. Apple is SINGULAR. As in a singular company.

Apple doesn't... Apple dislikes... Apple IS...

aaaand end lesson :)

Hello, Mr. Cook. ...ahem ..."henry"

I would have done it for half that. ;)

LOL niiice ;)

It looks like Jobs is instilling faith in investors/the board by providing Tim with these benefits. 99% sure that Tim will be Jobs' successor.

Seems like a good retention plan as there are many companies that would love to have him man their helms.
