Ok, this is a little pet peeve of mine that I've seen numerous times on MacRumors comments. Apple is SINGULAR. As in a singular company.

Apple doesn't... Apple dislikes... Apple IS...

aaaand end lesson :)

collective nouns are tricky in grammar. sometimes they take on singular verbs, and sometimes they take on plural verbs. but usually, you'll see the case where american english adopts the singular, and british english uses the plural. and because macrumors is a site visited by more than just people from the united states, you'll see corporations treated as plural quite often.

and...way to go, tim! definitely think it's well-deserved.

I like listening to Cook on the end of quarter calls. He has a good style.

When he speaks it's worth listening, because he cuts to the chase very quickly.

Bloody hell, $5mil?

How about using that to hire some more software developers and protect what Niche computer markets you have left?

With $40 billion in cash and growing do you really think $5 million is much to give the acting CEO?

Apple is picky about their software developers, and other employees for that matter, so they're not going to do a hiring frenzy like other companies. They move their OS team members back and forth from various OS projects but that may be to keep them excited about what they are doing.

They could use some more application developers as more client and server apps would be nice in the included OS bundle. :)

Typical double standard here in fanboy world. If it were the dude at Microsoft taking over Bill Gates' job and getting a treat, you know what the answer would be.

Lets see, The President of the US receives a yearly salary of $400,000 plus $50,000 in expenses. A Four Star US Military General receives $204,000 per year. This guy receives a $5,000,000 bonus plus his regular salary and $16,000,000 in stock options, all for six months work. This management salary structure in the US is totally out of whack. How about declaring a stock dividend and return some of these profits to the share sholders.

Mac sales have been rising every single quarter for years now.

Have you just woken up from a 10 year nap? I don't think they need to change their game-plan too much.

Some people here think they should focus on the niche products instead of the ones that have made them one of the most successful companies in the world.

Seems like a bad idea to me, but some people are self-centered and only worried about them... so I don't really blame them... Apple has several very high growth areas that have kept the company growing when almost every other company out there has been getting smaller and less profitable, if profitable at all.

It would be misguided, in my opinion for them to focus on the products that are there at the cost of the ones who made them the super company they are in 2010.

That being said, I understand some of the grumbling, and believe Apple should have enough resources to do all these things, but the reality is the company is driven by one person and thus there is only so much real work that can be done.

5 Million? Who are we to judge who gets what.

But why ooohhh why can't Apple spend just a little more money on actually improving the software side of the products.

Seriously how long do we have to wait to get an official version of LockScreen Info for the Iphone...? or some decent backgrounding features?

Maybe you should spend 5 dollars to fix the green resize button in OSX.. It keeps resizing randomly which is useless. Turn it into a maximize button for freck sake!

LOL niiice ;)

That depends. You've got your Americanisms and then you've got The Queen's English. Depends which side of the pond you're on. In Canada, we speak The Queen's English, but we tend to mix in some Americanisms now and then.

Using plural is not wrong. Not everybody lives in the U.S. End lesson. ;)

Very good for him. Dare I say, when Jobs decides to step down (assuming death due to natural cause doesn't make him step down first), Tim Cook the next CEO of Apple?

Its alot, but he kept stocks at a nice RISING pace while the big man was gettin patched up, obviously he deserves some recognition for taking helm of the Apple Enterprise (literally)...

Don't forget :apple: has like $10B in the bank, this isn't much

Nobody in his line of work deserves that much money for 6 months of work. Just ridiculously insane. :p

damn, that's what i call recognition. i was fired right after presenting the final version of a project, but i didn't work for apple then...

Exactly. This is how capitalism is supposed to work. Unlike the Bankers who had to take taxpayer money and paid themselves 30 million dollar cash bonuses. while shareholders ate 80% losses in equity.

And those same bankers who pay their top men huge bonuses, while guys like myself in the front line get a big fat 0% bonus despite meeting the incredibly hard targets set by those at the top.

Remember, bank workers are also tax payers ... and the topic of bonuses is an incredibly touchy one for me right now.
