By then Tesla will have its Model 3 out and will have massively increased supercharger coverage. The Model 3 is set to complete with things like the BMW 3-series - ie. the first rung of the 'luxury' market.

Apple need to undercut this and make something much better than a Nissan Leaf that can be bought by mainstream Ford and Toyota customers or people willing to pay more than before for a car because it's so good.

Apple just doing 'another Tesla' won't be enough. I don't doubt Apple can make a great electric car but it needs more than that - something that will do for cars what the iPhone did for phones.

Kind of a weird amount of hate you're throwing at a car that doesn't exist yet. What's the deal?

I hate Apple's mobile devices. iOS is a limiting system that's stripped down of so many necessary features for prosumer/power users.

They could be performing studies on various engines.
I just can't believe Apple would be building a car with an internal combustion engine. Even as a "range extender". Batteries are improving so quickly that you really don't need a range extender engine. The Chevy Bolt EV coming out later this year has 200 EPA-rated miles of battery range.

And will only drive on Apple iRoads (TM)....
Huh, huh! Did you come up with that yourself? /s

So if I mention the obvious fact that an electric car can't help losing range if the driver runs the heater or AC, I must therefore be in the pocket of Big IC Auto?

Really amusing. Thanks.
What's really amusing is that you need to jump on the edge cases to bolster your point. Even more amusing is the fact that gasoline engines waste so much energy that using some of that waste for heat *doesn't further reduce their efficiency, and you're touting that as an advantage!

Even more amusing: you're completely ignoring the enormous maintenance costs that simply disappear when you switch to electric. I just spent @$400 on brakes for my Celica. They'll likely last the life of the car in an EV. The $1300 I spent on a catalytic converter? Gone in an EV. The $70 (double that if I do it myself - my time is worth something) I spend on oil changes about every two months? Gone in an EV. Radiator problems? Not in an EV. Transmission? Not a problem either, nor are belts, hoses, air filters, etc...

*Really, it does. Carrying around the extra antifreeze and mechanicals adds unnecessary weight. The weight is there all the time though, so you don't see a range decrease in winter because of it. The decrease is permanent.
