I believe he deserves this honour, for his stance with US Government agencies a year ago. He has also worked hard to become the CEO of Apple, even though I may not agree with some of his decisions he has contributed and been vocal for some good causes. He is also not without fault when it comes to taxes and using his position for personal agenda's.

It could go to someone worse or someone more deserving, in the end it is the University and facilities decision. I wonder how many and who else was considered for this honour.

So because he didn't have a degree, Steve a Jobs was more worthy of the hon degree? So what about those of us who have multiple degrees, does that make us any less worthy of having more than 1. Personally I don't have a problem with Tim Cook, I've said it before he's done great for Apple, it's not the same Apple as it was under Steve Jobs and that's a good thing. But each to their own I guess.

Edit: Steve Jobs also hand selected Tim Cook to succeed him as C.E.O of Apple, so to say Tim Cook has done nothing isn't exactly fair or correct.
Yes. The original point of the honorary degree in the first place was to honor people without them. It is to recognize someone that has earned the same level of resect and intelligence without the higher education institution. So yes, Steve Jobs was much more worthy than Tim. Achieving success without the safety net of the college degree should be recognized, not a person with a degree. It takes more work and determination to be successful when you don't have the degree/receipt hanging on your wall. THAT is the point of the honorary degree. It is not to join the Tim Cook social justice warrior circle jerk club.

I'm not saying Steve Jobs didn't work hard, of course he did but so does Tim Cook, Steve Jobs has become this kind of legend figure who is attributed to the successes of Apple, but what about the failures, I just find it hypocritical when people say about Tim Cook and the whole Apple is doomed nonsense, just because it's changed since Jobs died. Both Steve Jobs and Tim Cook worked their butts off to get where they are/were and so did Jonny Ive and the rest of the Apple team, Ive was knighted here in the U.K and once again I think we'll done Jonnny, it's an achievement that was earned. I think Tim deserves it as well.

Admire or not, agree with his politics or not, like his actions or not - at least we can say that Cook did something(s). And that something is recognized as significant by this University. The acknowledgement from a university for achievement is a degree, yes? So they give him a degree. Seems reasonable... not typical but reasonable. I mean, it's not like he got a prize from some noble institution without having actually done anything, eh? Now THAT would be silly.

Knighting is the most pointless of honors if you ask me...but it might be a UK and USA cultural difference thing. The UK is very much entrenched in old world traditions where as the US does not hold any of that in any regard. I mean you still think having a Queen is a thing where as we have moved way past all that non-sense. Democracy should not have a ruler. Even the Germans moved away from monarchy before WWII. I guess though that's why we kicked you guys out of here in the first place in the 1700's. lol At any rate, this is getting off topic.....

Apple is a phone company run by a social justice warrior. That is the Apple of today. There are plenty of reasons why that isn't good.

It's mostly Americans who like us having a queen. Lots of Brits would happily wave goodbye to the sponging freeloaders.

I'd be surprised if he understands anything anyone says. Been here a few months and sometimes I swear it's another language entirely!

Hopefully someone asks about the Mac Pro in the Q&A

Aye, see that Mac Pro Tim? Three grand fe' a machin' thas no even bin updat'id since Twent'i'-Thurtin'?! Did ye think we'r' ahl buttoned up the back wantin' te pay that much now?!

*With apologies to all true Glaswegians. Actually all Scottish people in general.

Honorary degrees are nothing more than a self-serving attempt by a college to associate itself with someone successful or famous. Now they can add Tim Cook’s name to their promotional materials. Wouldn’t surprise me if these tailcoat chasers ask him for a donation.

I'm surprised I understood that, hehe

It's always fun to see the critics' panties all bunched up. A sign that Tim Cook is doing something right.

Oh please. The Tim Cook circle jerk continues.

Why not honor someone worth honoring. Tim is rich, he doesn't need honors. The only honor he deserves is the "does everything the same every year" award.

He has an intern pen a letter and throw an MLK quote in....that is all it takes to be the "hero".

I think it's long past time that TC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. BO was awarded the prize and isn't even openly gay!

Who cares... he has been everywhere and such an attention grabber, who turned Apple Inc into a money sucking enterprise. Please, the boards vote him and Eddy out, and they are too flashy.

Apple CEO Tim Cook will receive an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow on February 8 at 6:00 p.m. local time, as spotted by 9to5Mac. Following the ceremony, there will be a "Fireside Chat" and Q&A session. The free sold-out event is open to staff and students of the University of Glasgow only. The ceremony will take place at Bute Hall on the university's campus. More details are available on ticketing website Eventbrite.

Yesterday, Cook was named the recipient of the Newseum 2017 Free Expression Award in the Free Speech category.

It's notable, of course, that the current Rector of Glasgow University is... Edward Snowden! I wonder if he'll attend/ask a question by video link?
