Is Facebook really just using the data for personalized ads?

If so, I am not even sure I would opt out. I will see ads while browsing the web, no matter what. I would take ads for interesing things I care about over ads for completely random stuff that does not relate to me at all.

I will probably still opt out, simply because I do not trust them.
It’s IP based. So if someone else in your household looks up stuff, you can get their ads. It’s happened to me before.

It floors me that people expect a product to be “free” with no trade offs. If tomorrow Mark Zuckerberg announced an ad-free version of Facebook that was $5.99 a month or something how many people would sign up?

That's a false dichotomy, though. It presumes that Facebook's infamously invasive tracking -- he knows when you've been sleeping, he knows when you're awake -- is the only model that could support such a business. There's no law of business that says "in order to keep this running, we *have* to subject users to information gathering that the NKVD would reject as too invasive, there's just no other way."

Privacy aside, to be fair to Facebook, what track record does Apple hold for Apple to tell Facebook how they should run their social network. iTunes Ping? Lol. It's not as if Apple has a track record of successful social network venture.... just sayin'. (shrug).

This is one of those kind of topics where you should do a shred of research before commenting.

Facebook is a cancer on society and the more I learn about it the stronger I believe that.
Amen to that, I hope this puts them out of business. Rotten company and sleazy CEO. I cannot stand them (or Google for that matter).

“Standing up to Apple” who is taking a privacy stand?? LMAO! I’m sure people “stood up” to suffragists and abolitionists, too. With all this horsecrap hand wringing, sniping, and suing we are witnessing corporate establishment’s last convulsions of being on the wrong side of the defining IT issue of our time. They built their business model on stealing and distributing our personal information in a time when it was ok. Now it isnt. Tough luck. You don’t have my sympathy. Let’s hope they don’t have the sympathy of our elected representatives either.

It's more than just IP based.

I've been off FB for years, but someone else in my household is daily user.
I do NOT see ads related to other people in my household. (age and gender specific).
