Well, he's no Jobs, but come on, compared to every other technology oriented keynote...Apple and Cook are still about 10000000000000000000x times better. Every other company makes me cringe at the incredible amount of awkwardness.

I think he was much better than last year, MUCH! I liked his presentation, he just messed it up a little at the end and he knew it. It must be difficult for him knowing there are still loads of people out there waiting for him to fully replace Steve - that's not going to happen, but he will become a new style of speaker.
I think his touching words at the end (which didn't really work this time) were his own 'just one more thing' to end the keynote. I admire how he is trying to bring back the magic that Steve brought, but in his own way. For example, the heartwarming video near the start... fantastic.

Jobs was a razzle dazzle salesman in the purest sense. Using his charismatic aura to lure people in, he could get people to believe in magic.
The consummate influence wielding, smooth talker, his ability to convince people his way was the only way, was quite a feat. Not too much unlike the snake oil salesman of the wild west, he put up sales numbers stronger than anyone before him.
Oh sure, the products he hawked were excellent, yet no one but Steve could spin a tale of magic as he did. Love em or hate em, the man had lips of gold.

I agree that he has improved dramatically since his first keynote, but still needs to improve. I'm getting the impression that Tim Cook doesn't handle on-the-fly moments very well.

I totally agree with you about that video. The blind guy using his phone to walk around in a forest alone was very powerful. He still had some the the Steve-style "this product is amazing" stuff in there, but Cook seems to lean more toward "this product accomplishes amazing things."

I just watched the last minute of the keynote. Cook just messed up the timing slightly. It was supposed to be (paraphrased): "...can fundamentally change the world, and I can hardly think of a better reason to get up every morning. [pause] With that, I wish you the best week ever, the best WWDC ever..."
Instead, it became: "can fundamentally change the world. [pause] I can hardly of a better reason to get up in the morning, and I wish you the best week ever, the best WWDC ever..."
Basically, he paused after the "fundamentally change" bit, likely forgetting the final clause of the sentence for a moment. When he remembered it, it came out weird, which he realized, making him panic and punch through the last few lines.
It happens. Steve had the occasional awkward moment, too.

I think he's depressed.
At D10, he sounded like someone who was playing someone trying to say the right things. People who are just trying to say the right things don't usually sound so transparent about trying to say the right things. It was oddly superficial, and not in a cagey way because of product secrecy. He seemed spaced out.
The only times he sounds in the moment are when he's sad. And he seemed genuinely sad a couple of times during the WWDC keynote.
You can down vote me, vilify me, and question the validity of my conclusions, but the one thing you can't do is deny the automatic instinct to intuit the emotions of public figures, and this is my intuition.

I think maybe you missed my point. But Lets go back a little further then. The Verizon iPhone Launch Event he was on stage and looked very uncomfortable. I'm not knocking him in anyway, i'm just saying that he's getting better and more comfortable onstage as time goes on.
