My 1TB Time Capsule died yesterday. I bought it in August 2009 so it lasted nearly 29 months. I had it set up in an air-conditioned room and sitting on a couple of chopsticks to allow it to cool more easily. Luckily, I bought a portable 1TB hard drive recently and backed up all my movies, photos, music etc onto that so I haven't lost any data.

Now debating whether to buy another one as I did like the simplicity of the time machine back-ups.

It might still be covered by Apple if it was the defective batch. Worth taking to an apple store if you're near one. They might offer to replace it for free.

Standard policy is not to give you the old HD, but I was able to persuade my Apple Store to give me the old HD as well as replacing my (out of warranty) TC.

EDIT: Just to add for the benefit of others - if the only copy of data you have is on a TC or some other external drive, then it is NOT A BACKUP. A backup implies having a second copy of data. Ystradgynlais was wise enough to make a second copy of his TC data, so he lost nothing when it went down.

Thanks, I will try that. I am in the Middle East at the moment but I will be home next month and the Cardiff Apple store is about 30 mins away. I have applecare on a Macbook pro which still has 7 months to run so I think it should be covered under that.

i just bought a time capsule 2T yesterday, and after using it like 1 hour just died...led off. I try to replug/ try other outlet but nothing.
i am angry because my reseller apple store dont want to replace it and want to have a diagnostic first, and i really need it today and tomorrow.

Surely after one hour of use they would need to change it!

My aunt's TC also died completely and can hear only some ticking noise when connect to power. I took the hard drive out and will be recovering data for her.

Professionally have been using two Synology devices, 1 for my own company which has been up for the past 8 years DS111 and one RS814RP+ for my two clients (UK national companies) that have been up for the past 5 years. None of them have failed me and only one WE HDD had to be replaced in RAID SHR but that's WD. The HDD taken out from Apple's TC is a standard Seagate one so good luck with backups using their product that costs 2+ times more an uses cheap hardware. Apple - thank you but NO!
