Time Capsule vs AE

Is the time capsule worse than the AEBS? My AEBS has significantly longer range in 802.11n 2.4Ghz mode than my old router...

Yes, mine definitely is - at least according to my wife, who has a 15" PB G4. On her Mac she now gets 3 out of 4 bars instead of 4 - and the TC is only 12' away on the other side of a brick wall.

Also, I cannot get my old AEBS to extend my network. It just seems to conflict with the TC and hangs both.

I've found the range is fine on 2.4Ghz mode. Just frustrating that I can't use 5GHz in my building, since i thought that was supposed to be a more interference-free band.

Same here, but. now I have a TC + AE to extend it. Can I combine these two? So the TC uses 5Ghz and the AE 2.4Ghz?

Hey,

Just reading about people not getting good reception at 5Ghz- I had this problem also with TC.

When you switch it to 2.4Ghz it works much better.

Hope this helps,

M

Yes it does, that's what I have now. So the network speed is now 130 MBps. Hoiwever, you want to have N speeds, as is 300 Mbps. That was what I wanted, but it cannot be done, at least in my house. :(

Set up WDS

I had poor (and variable) signal strength on Time Capsule and tried to extend the network with an Airport Express, but it did nothing. After an hour on the phone to Apple Care, still no improvement. However, I have now set up a wireless distribution system and am getting a steady 4/4 bars. Here's a step-by-step set of instructions for those, like me, who are still learning the game:
1. Plug in Time Capsule and Airport Express
2. Open Airport Utility
3. Select Time Capsule
4. Write down Time Capsule ID
5. Select Airport Express
6. Write down Airport ID
7. Select Manual Setup
8. Select Wireless
9. From Wireless Mode menu, select “Participate in a WDS network”
10. Select WDS
11. From WDS Mode, select “WDS remote”
12. Tick “Allow wireless clients”
13. In WDS Main, type the Time Capsule ID
14. Select Time Capsule
15. Select Manual Setup
16. Select Wireless
17. From Wireless Mode, select “Participate in a WDS network”
18. Select WDS
19. From WDS Mode, select “WDS main”
20. Tick “Allow wireless clients”
21. In WDS Remotes, type the Airport Express ID
22. Enyoy!:)
