My 1TB TC died a week ago and Apple refused to exchange it. So I decided to fix it myself by replacing the two 1500uF 6.3v capacitors and the single 470uF 6.3v capacitor inside the power supply. I got two 1800uF 6.3v and one 820uF 6.3v capacitor from thecapking.com. I cut out the old capacitors but left the leads and soldered the new caps to them. Now my TC is working normally again.

I did not replace the rubber base pad because its holds in too much heat. I put a set of 1/2" rubber feet on the metal base plate so more air could pass through the unit. I hope Apple makes a serious redesign of these products, or at least issue a firmware update that turns the fan on at a much lower temperature.

this is exactly what i am planning to do. great to hear that it works! thanks for the input :D

4 Questions:

1. Was this a difficult task?
2. How much did you spend on the caps?
3. How did you discharge the caps before removal?
4. Any chance of a write up?

I figure i'll try this if mine goes. I'd need to open the thing anyways to get the HD out, and its out of warranty. Was also considering dremmeling some slots underneath to also help it cool...

has anyone successfully changed the power supply? My TC died and I experienced the same symptoms as described on this thread. I'd love to revive it! Can someone post instructions if they successfully fixed their power supply?

Thanks

havent done it but i know the procedure. change 3 capacitors and its all done :)

Thanks for the info! Do you know of a manual or instructions? Could you point me in that direction? I still have my TC; it's begging me to fix it!

Here is pretty much all the information you will ever need. this guy does repairs on dead TCs over here in australia - we will be sending ours to him soon (i live in aust). its about $50Aus to repair i believe. he does all sorts of other mods too. there are 2x 1500uF 6.3V and 1x470uF 6.3V caps to change.

the website pretty much tells ya it all :)

Thanks, mate! Unfortunately, and as you can see, I live in CA. I wonder if there is anyone in CA who can do this? The repairs look doable, but prone to failure for someone who does not have a lot of experience.

Good luck with your TC!

Dead again

My 1TB TC died this morning for the third time. Disk seems to have failed this time, whereas it was a power-supply issue on the previous two.

Sadly, I was trying to restore a file that my son managed to delete.

I love having all of my Macs back-up over the network and I'm not sure that the wife would enjoy having an external disk attached to her Macbook Pro.

Has anyone tried this?

Cheers,

Mark

My TC died recently, too. I noticed that you placed rubber feet on the bottom of your TC. How exactly did you do that? Also, did you place a fan on the bottom of the TC?

Lastly, how difficult was it for you to change the caps? It doesn't look too hard, but I've never performed a task like this.

Thanks for the help!

The poor reliability of the Time Capsule is pretty sad. I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks Apple should have recalled a lot of them for what clearly seems to be faulty power supplies.

I use an AEBS with a WD My Book attached. External power supply, external hard drive, can't go wrong. In fact, it's such a good solution that I don't understand why they ever developed the 'dedicated' Time Capsule in the first place.

thats all that i recommend to users now. the TC is dead to me until apple puts an external PSU on it!

...if only apple had just kept the PSU setup of the AEBS, this may have never been an issue (or as much of one in such a short lifespan (~18 months))...

Yup, if only. There isn't really anything we can do to fix their errors I'm afraid :( the guy in australia I linked to before has created a number of methods to use external psu's though, fwiw.

For anyone tracking this thread:

Apple appears to have acknowledged the problem with at least some runs of the TC. I called a couple weeks ago when mine died (500GB model) and they replaced it free despite being out of warranty (I do have an in-warranty Mac but that didn't matter). The CSR acknowledged that the high failure rate has meant that apple is replacing these.

interesting! I might just give apple a call. Too bad mine is in pieces but :(

Thanks for the heads up

Another update from my Oct 6th post Here. The TC Apple gave me has died. So it lasted about 6 months I would guess.

I will post an update after I visit the Apple Store again.

ugh how thrilling :(

we are currently going "through the hurdles". we rang up the place we got our dead TC from and they took it back to look at it (because its now covered by warranty apparently ) just waiting for confirmation that we are getting a replacement (or not).

For now I can't recommend a TC to anyone due to this happening two times in 6 months. The TC concept is great and actually works pretty good but it's life span is short and it's a headache in the end.

It really does not matter to me weather they give me a new one at no cost or not. As I mentioned in my prior post back in Oct it's always best to use the 3-2-1's of backup.

Anyway I will update this post after I get a chance to visit the Apple Store on Monday sometime.

cool keep us updated. I am going to pick my replacement after work. I hope it works good.

Apparently only going to get a 1tb model, which sucks I thought we would get an equivalent model. (i.e. 2Tb model)

ok. got the time capsule! working fine. but a few questions.

1. it appears as though the TC is an older model! it doesnt appear to be able to work in dual band mode. the settings have a composite 902.11g/n mode and thats it. its serial number 6F00203AYZT

2. i was hoping to get the "equivalent" model of what we purchased at the time - i thought that was apples policy. e.g. if you buy the top model (which we did at the time), you will be given the same top model if you happen to get a replacement. i have seen this a number of times on this site, a poster got a brand new 8x2.93ghz MacPro off his 5 year old PowerMac G5 where the water cooling sprung a leak (he had applecare). i thought it would be the same situation for us users of the rediculously hot TC. :( but clearly not.

ah well. its working. im just waiting for it to overheat and fail soon

C'Mon

Just as I thought, Apple gave me another new TC (first generation) at no cost.
My first one lasted 16 months and the second one lasted 6 months.

Didn't Albert say?
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

So rather than keep and use this new TC they gave me I'm going to sell it.
I purchased a new second generation TC with the duel band etc. Guess I will see if it works/lasts any better/longer.

What a pain in the rear. :(

Off Beat News

Here is some encouraging news :) It's been 3 days and my new TC is still working.
