There's no such thing. ;)

Got to be a lot more fun getting stopped in the civic than the GTI.

Think of all the fun you will have being stopped by the cops and the long wait while they do a stolen part check on the riced out civic.

I thought the S. CA we crush em campaign was a blast.

My neighbor has a BMW 330xi and she loves it. I think they are very stylish on the outisde, but very bland inside. They have very high repair costs...

I seem to wreak a BMW every other year. But one thing that surprised me is that the repair costs are NOT that high, when compared to my two nissans. They are if you always go back to the dealer, but then all dealer services are high no matter the brand. But if you find a good Import shop, which I was lucky to have a relationship with one since my first beemer in 97', the parts are easy to find and quite reasonably priced. And the cars last forever from what I have had, I hit 200,000 in two with no major engine problems. (but wreaked them both shortly after that )

i vote for Toyota. and i vote for a scion tC. quick and reliable car for that price

The scions may be reliable, but I can tell you they are CRAP!
I have an XB and it rattle and squeeks it has almost no power ans **** constantly breaks off in my hand.
It only has 40K on it!

Kiddies:

He wants German. So don't waste your breath on Scions, Saabs, and Subarus. (Or Mercury Mariners, Marauders, and Mustangs, for that Matter.)

Mustn't make much of 'Merican makes, methinks.

OP: "My Mercedes ML? Magnificent machine, turned mangled metal!"

I have an xA as a daily driver and mine is fine. If you wanted a powerful car, you really shouldn't have bought a 105hp car. Mine has 20k and I have had no fitment problems...in fact, I am part of two scion show teams and NONE of them have had the fitment problems you describe.

I seem to have missed where he said he only wants a german car. Sorry, but for $20k you're going to be taking on a maintenance nightmare. The cheaper germans are NOT built as well as the expensive ones.

On the other hand, my weekend toy, a tC with factory supercharger, which cost me $20.5k out the door with the supercharger, is GREAT. It is fast, it looks sporty and agressive, with a short throw shifter it drives GREAT. That's my choice in that price range. I hate the styling of the MKV and I had a GTI AND a GLI and BOTH had horrific electrical problems and the GTI (a 2005 model) caught fire on a highway. Never again will I go near a VW.

For 20.5k a new GTI can be had, especially since they are not selling extremely well they can be bought for a discount around invoice. I'm sorry that your experiences with VW are horrible, just like some of my mac friends who have horrible mac experiences and will not leave windows vista (what the f? was my reaction when I found out what happened to their new macbooks). True, the old MKIV are notoriously prone to problems, but the MKV is not, great reliability, fun to drive. With VW, I'd only buy if the car is manufactured in Germany, not Mexico/South Africa, and the MKV is one of the few. AND the 2.0T engine has won many awards, same engine as the A4 which is recommended by Consumer Reports. Turbo lag is almost non-existent, the DSG transmission is amazing, the 6spd transmission is also fantastic. Fit and finish is top of the class, styling is unique and a throwback to the MKI, but it's really a love-it-or-leave-it b/c tastes vary.

Since the OP was looking at it as an option, I cannot say more good things about the MKV GTI plus I own one. The electrical problems 1 year in for my car are perfectly fine, 1 rattle the and it has been fixed by me after 5 minutes of work, people in the vwvortex.com online community are not having problems either. Same class as the Supercharged TC, a little quicker and modest mods don't kill reliability as they had before and really increase power to WRX level when upgrading the ECU. OP needs to go have some fun and test drive!

Alright, so my current car, a 99 Mercedes ML320 with 185k miles isn't doing so well lately, so it's getting close to time to replace it. I'm looking to spend about 20k. I've been looking at a 2003 3 series, and a GTI MKV. Any other suggestions for a quick, reliable vehicle? Thanks

god I hate all the subarus up here in vermont. Everyone drives them like they are completely infallible in bad weather, and that's not true. You wouldn't BELIEVE the wrecks I go to because people think 4 wheel drive equals road glue.

I wish people would buy regular cars and learn to drive them instead of buying a subaru because they "need 4wd" to get down the driveway and to the natural foods store.

the tC isn't the same as the xB. the tC has 160 horsepower. not 105 like the xB. my girlfriend has a tC with 40,000 miles, and it's pretty quick. no real issues.

dang, i wasn't aware of a supercharger for the tC. how much horsepower does it add? i might have to think about adding this to my girl's tC later on down the road

the TRD supercharger is about $2700 including install (buy the parts themselves from trdsparks.com, the supercharger is $2000 and then the rest is labor. if she's got an auto it needs a fit kit). It boosts to between 200 and 210, depending on if you've got an intake and whether the car is a 5spd or auto.

yes i agree, they rnt even 4WD's neway. just AWD. there is no way on this earth i would take it on anything besides bitumen, concrete and light corrugations.
